Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez compares refugees to baby Jesus

Please, it is a joke. It wasn’t even an insult. Lighten up.

Ummmm, since the Holy Family was forced to another country to flee for their lives, they were refugees. I fail to comprehend the outrage at stating a historical fact.

But if 80% or so of claimants to refugee status are disapproved, what is the merit in open borders?
I would guess that you know that “open borders” is a made-up issue. The statistics that you cite indicate that 20% of claimants are approved. For the benefit of the 20% that are approved, all claims need to be adjudicated; and the rights of all claimants need to respected.

Because this is the USA, all migrants should be treated humanely.

What gets missed in all this is the role of government, which she wants to expand. It was government that made the Holy Family go to Bethlehem. It was government that made them flee to Egypt. Yet her solution is to make government larger, more powerful, and less accountable. Even if she rightly identifies there is a problem she doesn’t understand it or know how to solve it.
The Holy Family moved from one part of the Roman Empire to the other, basically like moving across state lines within the US. No illegal incursions on anyone else’s territory involved.
Was it? The modern passport and visa system is a somewhat new concept. But I don’t know that there were completely open borders. It is something I’d like to know more about.

Unless you’re prepared to make the case that Nebraska, say, would order the death of male children, so a family moved to Oregon to save the life of their new baby boy, it’s in no way analogous
That case doesn’t need to be made. The reason for moving isn’t the point. The point is in comparing the governances and boarders of the time to the governances and boarders of today.
The Roman Empire largely left local law and custom intact as much as possible
Good point, so does the Federal government with the States.
Moving from, let us say, the province of Britain to Judea was not at all comparable to moving from New York to Connecticut.
Joseph did not move from Britain. Furthermore, this isn’t about culture. It’s about boarders and governances.

Why should I believe “open b orders” is a “made up issue” when politicians talk about in and some even have advocated it?

All claims that seek adjudication at the beginning are adjudicated. There is no good reason to think they’re not being treated humanely. Nor is there a good reason to keep them in the U.S. during the process.

And why do they reject asylum in Mexico?

And they left their people, and their homes, to escape a dangerous situation, going to a foreign land with foreign people and foreign customs, in the hopes that their son’s life will be spared.

Seems pretty apt to me.
A change in culture and geographic location is not the point, as you should know. By your reasoning, any immigrant is a refugee.

Furthermore, there were Jewish settlements in Egypt of which Joseph no doubt stayed in one.

The people defending AOC are forgetting the part of the gospel where Jesus said that when people come to you for help you should arrest them and take their children away.

[Matthew 2:12
And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they withdrew to their country by another route.

[Matthew 2:13
When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up!” he said. "Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the Child to kill Him."

Even if you wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt despite her previous gaffes, was Jesus a refugee baby in a manger? Not according to scripture. They didn’t flee Herod until after he left the manger, which was what she was referencing.

Debating the merits of accepting any refugees is fine but separate from her inaccurate tweet.

It’s exactly the point when we’re talking about refugees.
I’ll give her a pass on that one. The fact is, Mary and Joseph and Jesus were refugees at one point, although admittedly we do not know if Jesus slept in a manger at any point during their time as refugees, and Jesus himself was quite clear about our duty to the poor and the hungry and those in prison.

I shouldn’t have said she was “elected” by the “cult of personality”, but rather she is elevated to a national stature by the “cult of personality”.
I think the same thing can be said of Trump, so it is really not much of a criticism.

Great quote. Does it correct her tweet, by chance?

That’s what people are parsing, if you read the posts. I appreciate the sentiment to care for refugees but there is no record of a refugee baby in a manger on Christmas. That’s all.

So you’re saying I can move from Chicago to Albuquerque if a local gang is trying to kill me, and I can call myself a refugee?

You are entirely free to move from Chicago to Albuquerque for any reason you want. And it’s fine with me if you want to call yourself a refugee. Go right ahead.

While it is obvious that Ocasio-Cortez was comparing the plight of today’s migrants seeking asylum at the U.S. border to the experience of the Holy Family after the birth of Jesus, she did not write that as a refugee in Egypt Baby Jesus slept in a manger. According to scripture, Jesus was put in the manger because there was “no room for them in the inn.”

FROM THE ARTICLE:
Even a holiday greeting from newly-elected Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sparked controversy when she compared refugees to the baby Jesus.

“Joy to the World! Merry Christmas everyone – here’s to a holiday filled with happiness, family, and love for all people. (Including refugee babies in mangers + their parents.),”

the self-described Democratic Socialist wrote in a Christmas Day tweet referencing the myth of Jesus’s birth in a manger.

Luke 2:6-7
6While they were there, the time came for her Child to be born. 7And she gave birth to her firstborn a Son. She wrapped Him in swaddling cloths and laid Him in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn.

I don’t find there to be any controversy in Ocasio-Cortez‘s holiday greeting. I would dispute the comment concerning “the myth of Jesus’s birth in a manger” by Max Jaeger whose byline is on the article - but only because I do not consider the Bible to be “myth.”

So they were fleeing the no vacancy sign?

I see no need for further discussion on her tweet. It was inaccurate as are other things she has said, but the plight of refugees is indeed real.

Problem is, many on the board cant admit both statements are true.

As in said in other topics, I’d think the people who get apoplectic about lifesitenews.com would be bothered by her similar misrepresentation. But why expect consistency on a board full of partisans (of which I too am one).
