Making a claim you can’t support is not “pointing out a weakness”. If you think there is a strong argument against the Holy Family being refugees, then Google “Were Mary and Joseph refugees” and look at the results. You will find people on both sides of the question. Go through that list and find the one that you think most supports your view and post a link to it and I will show you how it is flawed. Or, you can save yourself the trouble and just read the hits that agree that they were refugees and learn something valuable.

I have no burden of proof here. The burden of proof is on those who want to stretch Scripture to claim that the Holy Family were refugees just like the horde of illegals on the Southern border.

Much has been made here about the issue of Roman control of Egypt. That is a silly technicality. No one in first century Israel would have considered Egypt to be “the same country” they lived in. They surely would have thought of leaving Israel and going to Egypt as “leaving their country.” Rome occupied many nations at it’s peak. It did not unite them into a single country. To a first century Jew, their religion and their nationality were one in the same. Certainly Joseph and Mary would have seen it that way. They would have felt like foreigners in Egypt, remembering how their people were led out of the slavery of Egypt by Moses. That was a deep part of their identity.
I’d agree with this truth.

She better not be saying anything good about separation of Church and state though since she is trying to hijack my religion for her agenda.
Somewhere I read she is Catholic. And FWIW, I’ve frequented Spanish Masses and have seen the devoutness of those present.

What point is that? I could easily see a priest referring to Joseph and Mary as refugees. Maybe today it just isn’t acceptable?

The point is that she is likely to cry “Separation of Church and state!” when talking about state endorsed homosexual behavior or abortion.

“:Still, many consider Christ a refugee. Days after his birth, his parents were forced to flee Bethlehem to Egypt because Judean king Herod heard that the “king of the Jews” was born, became jealous, and ordered the killing of male babies under the age of two, according to the Gospel of Matthew.”
Such a formulation is not consistent with all the evidence in Scripture. In fact, when the wise men came, Jesus was already a paidon (toddler) and they were living in a “house”. The reason Herod ordered all those killed two years and younger is because that was the time frame between the appearance of the star and the date he made the decree.

But it is true that they fled persecution, looking for a place of safety.

The problem we are having is that we cannot assume all those who wish to enter are, in fact, refugees, and even if they are, if they are not a danger to our society.

Remember how you feel about being pedantic when someone complains about an inaccurate Breitbart of Life Site News headline. That’s all we ask. There is usually a grain of truth in most stories or tweets, even if wording is done in a way to make it especially appealing to emotion. As long as you don’t complain in those cases, we are good.

the illegal aliens at the border
What makes them “illegal”?
Joseph had a useful skillset
What makes you assume none of them do?
The passport system for the Roman Empire is a historical fact:
Yes, but the point is that the Holy Family were not Roman Citizens.
It would seem people could wander about the Empire at will.
In general, perhaps, but without a doubt, had Herod caught them, he would not have supported their plan to emigrate to Egypt.
The burden of proof is on those who want to stretch Scripture to claim that the Holy Family were refugees just like the horde of illegals on the Southern border.
It would not surprise me to learn that a good number of them were in credible fear for their lives by thugs who are more efficient than Herod ever was.

What makes them “illegal”?
They attempted to cross the border in violation of our laws.
What makes you assume none of them do?
If they had useful skills, they could take a job from an American citizen and leech off our social services the legal way.
It would not surprise me to learn that a good number of them were in credible fear for their lives by thugs who are more efficient than Herod ever was.
That does not sound like fear to me.

We ought to bill them for the cost of the tear gas used in repelling their assault on our border.

No, it’s the fleeing for the life of a loved one that makes them a refugee.

The fleeing was done to a land that, for all intents and purposes, was foreign.

I don’t recall ever being pedantic toward either of these sites. Critical, yes. Pedantic, no.

Illegals is/are a derogatory term probably started by Limbaugh that now has been expanded to include those whose visas have expired or otherwise removed. Even those born in this country aren’t safe from deportation.

Entering the country improperly.

It’s short for “illegal aliens”, a term set out in the law, specifically U.S.C. Title 8, §1365(b). Rush Limbaugh didn’t invent it. Congress did. It is derogatory in the sense congress intended, which was to express that “aliens” who are not here legally shouldn’t be here. The word “alien” is ancient, dating back to ancient Rome.

Hmmm. It appears the term “illegal alien” is extremely widespread in government regulations and court cases, including those of the Supreme Court. Apparently it was used by Bill Clinton in an address. Not sure yet whether Obama ever used the term.
