This isn’t a theft.
The action of removing the pagan idols from the church is a statement to Church leaders.
Setting a precedent now and future.

Funny,

Are you going to hang some witches too?
Suffer not a witch to live.

Muffled voice from an ear piece

Oh I stand corrected, suffer not a poisoner to live.
Wait…
That makes for some awkward historical mistakes. All over a mistranslation.

Tell that to the Police.
And tell that to Customs whenever you have to fill paper work and have photos taken of each piece before crossing a border with pieces of art…
I’ ll wait outside with a cup of coffee.

The police can do whatever they want. They don’t determine the morals of destroying idols placed in a church.

Saint John Henry Newman on the Church’s adoption of pagan elements.
"The use of temples, and these dedicated to particular saints, and ornamented on occasions with branches of trees; incense, lamps and candles; votive offerings on recovery from illness; holy water; asylums; holy days and seasons, use of calendars, processions, blessings on the fields, sacerdotal vestments, the tonsure, the ring in marriage, turning to the east, images at a later date, perhaps the ecclesiastical chant, and the Kyrie Eleison, are all of pagan origin, and sanctified by their adoption into the Church."L

Oh Church leaders can call it that and can prosecute me but I say it is a statement. In my heart, I replicate what the individual did…removing those pagan idols.
Let us watch and see how this pans out.
Today is day one.

Get ready to warm a seat in jail then.
I am not kidding .It is serious.
And you know it.
For young people here: don t fool around with the law. Won’t get too far.

Why would I go to jail? Don’t be ridiculous. If these guys end up going to jail, they’ll join a long line of heroes for the faith, 2 millennia’s worth.

hey @pnewton, @graciew, is it just my impression or do none of these posters know anything about Africa and South America?? (You appreciate that any Portuguese is bound by birth, and moral obligation, to feel at home in those two continents?)

I’ll give 3 more examples of Our Lady as she’s usually represented in Africa and South America. To better understand the proximity with the iconography the Indians used. And trust me, anyone from the Southern Hemisphere would immediately understand the intention.

First is the most popular invocation in Brasil, “Nossa Senhora Aparecida”.

Then follow examples of the usual iconography of Our Lady used in Africa, you’ll notice the traditional ebony wood itself, used in both cases, which is called “Pau Santo”(Holy Wood.)

Excuse me: “ mother earth “ . And just like that it is found in the CCC
And if I am not mistaken CAF belongs to Dan Diego Archidiocese 2019 so pretending here that we belong in the Middle Ages and make a mess because a carving , a wooden carving! of a pregnant woman is naked , then I must belong to Mars.
Well then welcome to earth. 😆

I don’t understand your post? Who’s pretending we belong in the Middle Ages?

And what about the Mother Earth comment don’t you understand? That they referred to it as being a representation of life, fertility and Mother Earth. Because that was their words at the Vatican Press conference.

IT’S. NOT. OUR LADY.

We already know this
i don’t even understand what is supposed to be odd about those statues: seriously. Mary if fully clothed and veiled and even holding a rosary; What’s odd about them thats supposed to demonstrate how non-European iconography can be different? Is it the dark colour?

Hint: They think we’re racist westerners who hate everything different and non-European.

I think it’s the assumption that those statues are odd that is more possibly indicative of a weird attitude towards these places: someone tell me what is odd about those Marian statues.

The same cultures you are bashing and despising would be the first to respect and receive you with broad minded understanding, it’s obvious you do not share in those abilities.
I am African. Don’t bother to tell me how my home would receive me. The nerve of you guys. What besides the dark colour do you find odd in those statues?

Why do I feel people defending this attitude are more likely Middle class white people than the people who have a problem with the imagery of the statue of fertility?
