Well, I think the simple answer is not to normalize or glamorize it. If I were writing a story about two girls who fell in love, it would be from a Catholic perspective, and one or both of the girls would likely be Catholic or belong to another Christian denomination that did not condone homosexuality. They would have to struggle with what to do with their feelings. They would probably have to make sacrifices, and break off or not start the relationship in the first place. It would be a difficult story to tell, because we’re conditioned to believe that a happy ending requires romantic fulfillment. Not everyone gets that in real life, though, and that doesn’t mean they’re miserable. So it stands to reason that one can tell a story about a lesbian girl who does the right thing and does what is best for herself and the girl that she loves. Just because I’ve never seen it done doesn’t mean that it wouldn’t be a good story. It just has to be handled responsibly.
I see. Yes, it requires certain amount of work, and for some people, could be difficult to write. Good point with the expected romantic endings. I rather not write such stories. And with the current climate, less. Fans could be making fanarts or wirting fics of what-if scenarios, for fullfilling their lust and desire of such relationships. That happens for any production, though, but in this case they would have more fuel. It would be useful to search about this in traditional moral theology manuals to see if they touch these scenerios of story writing. Some manuals have all sorts of information.
That’s a good way of drawing a line, provided the people discussing it understand healthy family dynamics.
Yes.
I can see that. But I figure that if touching isn’t common in Japan, it shouldn’t be so common in media. And if it is, then it shouldn’t elicit extreme reactions. They can’t have it both ways.
They could avoid that, certainly. The problem is that blushing isn’t as defined as other visual cues they use. I have seen blushing used for shy people interacting with new friends, for people around their romantic interests, etc. That happens in real life too, but they could fin a way to make easy distinctions.
Ooh, what are you watching? 🙂
Tari Tari, from 2012. Is like K-On! done right.

The series is about a choral school group, composed by three girls and two guys. I have watched 8 episodes. The only problematic content, are the beach scenes (although there is no sexy posing, clothing malfunction, etc) two bath scenes (no private parts shown), and similar stuff, . For me these weren’t a problem, but maybe these could be for another person.

Even the character designs are varied. The male characters don’t look androgynous, and not all girls are small like little girls.
I think the difference between moe and shonen is that most of the time, boys are still the core audience of yaoi-baiting shows, while the core audience of a true moe show is, as I understand it, always adult men. That’s true even when there isn’t much yuri-baiting; the innocence of the girls and the cuteness of the designs is meant to appeal to male viewers, not females.
The yuri baiting in male directed moe shows, is a recent phenomenom. Since the success of K-On! the model of four girls doing cute stuff became more popular, and four (or other number) girls doing yuri stuff became more popular too.

Some series with cutesy character designs are being watched by women too.
Yaoi fandom is bigger and more active because most of what the fans want is produced in the fans themselves- fujoshi are going to spend a lot more time reading Naturo fanfic than watching the actual show. Whereas with moe and yuri, the producers center the show around the audience that wants that. Fandom doesn’t have to do much of anything, because the creators have already made it. So while fujoshi are a problem (and they’re a creepy problem), they don’t have the same level of backing from the shows themselves (most of the time). There’s a reason why Free! was so controversial, when shows with gender-swapped premises are a dime a dozen.
The swimming anime from last year was some sort of experiment to have a fujoshi-baiting show for a mainstream public. But yaoi baiting shows have been around for long time. Clamp productions (they use yuri baiting too), some Shojo and Josei, and obviously, the shows that are about yaoi. Before 2009-2010, most yuri shows and manga were produced by females for a female audience mostly, I think. It was after the explosion of the moe trend in the late 2000’s early 2010’s that these began to appear in male oriented shows.
Basically, media that we consume always deserves to be discussed and critiqued. I agree that we should be very careful about such things. I’m just prone to finding flaws with many things, and I definitely don’t think that every moral flaw means we can’t watch something. I think we should be aware of the flaws and good points, and choose our media accordingly.
There are certains degrees of moral flaws in works.
Yes. We can use media to portray a better world, but using it to create a world where we get everything we want at the expense of everyone else is shallow, unhealthy, and bound to get old eventually. Miyazaki understands how to use fantasy and escapism for good, giving people fun worlds to explore while also bringing up challenges. 🙂
Escapism or fantasy is not bad per se, it depends of how is presented.

I was reading some time ago that Prisma Illya had yuri-like fanservice, is that true?
I think you would get different answers depending on whom u asked, I guess it’s just a matter on how one interprets different scenes/actions/behaviors/etc… There was 1 lewd scene in ep 7 showing Illya-san over the back of Miyu-san almost like she was giving her… ummm… just use your imagination and finish that sentence. :o In the last episode, the 2 main characters did actually kiss, too. However, there is a bit of a reason behind it. But still, it’s obvious fan service, and I remember saying in the a previous anime thread we had here, that even the end card shown at the last episode was like… well, obvious pandering to the pervs considering how ecchi/lesbian-ish it portrayed the 2 main female characters.

There is that danger, with seven seasons of Voyager. I’m sure I’ll have time to finish my list of unfinished anime at some point.
It’s not only 7 seasons with 170+ eps, it’s 170+ eps that are also close to an hour long (w/commercials if u are watching on Hulu or something)! 😃 And TNG is the best because they make the best facepalms, lol 😛

I think I can agree with this. And if u do ever decide to write and attempt to publish this kind of story, please run your ideas through your spiritual director/adviser (if u have one), or others that are well grounded in the faith.

I think that is dangerous for them. Romantic gestures, reserved for marriages, or hetero relationships, are not good for them. Is not only actual sex that is immoral for them.
Gestures of strong bonding and self dedication/support and so on, not erotic stuff, are not immoral. I don’t think that’s considered immoral according to Catholic Thomism. A chaste but loving couple who don’t engage in sex (and similar sex acts) are not engaging in sin. I could be mistaken but it’s not the close and dedicated friendships between lesbians which would be an issue but things like sex, mutual masturbation, oral sex, fondling, watching porno together, and so on.
I don’t think is that difficult to tell them appart. What is the nature of the gestures? romantic? philial? eros?
It would. The nature is in question. If someone finds the other person incredibly important but does not want to engage sexually in them, cuddling and holding hands, kissing on the cheek need not be immoral.
The relationships you are describing (crushing on other girls, being romantic, and later switching to boys) souns like Japanese Class S relationships. I don’t think these are good either.
Type S? I don’t even know what that is. There are subtypes? Who cataloged them?

Maybe not ideal, but arguably what we’re doing here, spamming a good forum dedicated to the spread of the Gospel and so on with arguments about shading of anime characters’ cheeks is not that moral either.
I don’t have a problem with girl friendships. But romantic ones? yes, I don’t like these.
Of course. I just don’t think all intense friendships are romantic. And as previously made clear even in girls’ literature things such as “bosom” friends have been common. These were not proto-or pseudo lesbian/yuri relationships but rather a normal form of behaviour for many of these people.
Not only for the intrinsic problems, with the current climate, these are obvious yuri-bait. And that is the way most writers use them. And they like to blurry the lines between close friendship and romantic relationships. These are popular.
I don’t think the anime yuri stuff - which I don’t personally like either - is related to promotion of homosexuality in the West at all. It’s a completely different thing.

Again maybe some writers use that for yuri bait. Maybe some people get turned on by it. The issue is with the beholder. Some men get turned on by watching ordinarily dressed women in fashion catalogs. It’s just such an issue.

I don’t have references at hand, but I remember reading something about the dangers of some non-erotic interactions for these couples (the other stuff you mentioned, is obviously bad). I think it was something about certain gestures of actions that could lead to sinful interactions. Things like cuddling, sleeping together, etc.
It would. The nature is in question. If someone finds the other person incredibly important but does not want to engage sexually in them, cuddling and holding hands, kissing on the cheek need not be immoral.

Type S are romantic friendships that are similar to girlfriend and boyfriend, that are later discarded when the girls find a boyfriend. I don’t know who named these, either. I became aware of that term when looking for information about some shows from past seasons.

I don’t think speaking about media in this forum is something not moral. Is important, for prevention and study. Media and entertainment have influence over people, the comparison is not appropiated.

In the intentions of the author, could be different, but the effects on the fandom are similar.

If some writers use yuri bait, is their fault too, not only the fault of perverts. Authots should take reasonable measures to avoid these reactions. Obviously, there is a point that even with measures taken some fans are going to produce perverted things, but that would be on their part.

Potential dangers in that they could slip into sex etc… most likely. But most anime does not portray that either. Close relationships are a gimmick, designed for soap opera purposes. Sentimentalism 101.
What is the intent of the gestures? agape, philial, or eros?
Intent? We already said that full blown ero is not on.

OK. So I don’t think these necessarily have to be bad, as long as there is no ero stuff. And it is mild and does not center the plot around itself. As long as we know what it is, and why it’s there - to make excuses for more crying and soul searching with more cutesy characters doing the crying and so on, and have fewer male characters. Shows like Symphogear have this. There is a close bond between the 3 Symphogear girls and an almost Yuri bond between the non-Symphogear user girl and the heroine of the show. This is not reciprocated however. There is no fondling or any other immoral stuff though and yes I would prefer the bond be more S type than pseudo-Yuri but it’s not the central theme of the show.
I don’t think speaking about media in this forum is something not moral. Is important, for prevention and study. Media and entertainment have influence over people. The comparison is not appropiated.
Hmmm… I dunno. We seem to be going over the same stuff over and over again. 🙂
I don’t think intense friendships are romantic either.
OK.
In the intentions of the author, could be different, but the effects on the fandom, are related. Unintended consequences? something that could be foreseen? I don’t know.
Intentions are one thing. What the viewer gets out of it is IMO more important. Still when it comes to guidance of others, maybe discretion and review by adults is necessary. If you’re speaking from that POV and for reasons of safety and to err on the side of caution, I’m with you. One does not want to recommend something that will get some kid into some perversion gratification. I agree.

Yes but most anime creators are not Christians or Catholics or similar. In their moral systems full blown yuri is probably not immoral. And none of us produce anime. I would not produce Yuri or Yaoi. I would however probably make it all female cast with maybe an occasional place holder male.

Oh BTW have you seen Fantasista Doru? 🙂

A man and a woman that are not married face dangers with kissing and touching. For example, passionate kissing could lead to passionate touching, and to sex… even if they don’t fall into fornication, other issues like bad thoughts or lust could arise.

Something like that could happen to them too.
OK. So I don’t think these necessarily have to be bad, as long as there is no ero stuff. And it is mild and does not center the plot around itself. I think is more wholesome if these relationships stay at a philial or agape level, without imitating girlfriend and boyrfriend dynamics. That is, interactions that lead to romantic stuff.
Hmmm… I dunno. We seem to be going over the same stuff over and over again. 🙂
It has been a recurrent topic in recent months. Maybe is the recent seasons shows.

Yes, prevention and guidance That’s my point. These analysis and conversations, I’ve been using the opportunity to discuss these things and the effects on the fandom.

I know. Also, western people that write fics and make fanarts, are in more or less Christian influenced cultures.

I saw the first episode some months ago (when it was a new show, I think) but I don’t remember why I didn’t continued watching it.

However two gays living together and not engaging in sexual activity are not doing anything immoral. There is a potential for that, but it’s not immoral. This is an important point because it gets conflated in discussions. The Church is against gay sex but not against two gays who lead chaste lives with each other as life long partners, with all the caveats. The Church does not oppose gays, it opposes the sex(ual) stuff between them. This is important because the Church says the same about heterosexual relationships. And these days people do live together. That’s the economic realities of the day. And avoiding sex and keeping it for after marriage is key but to say just - don’t live together - is impossible because of the said economic reasons as well as cultural acceptability of that along with a potential backlash. People don’t want to be treated as children. Yes behaviour X can lead to sexual passions, but if the two people are balanced and sensible, it need not.
Watching a pantyhose ad on TV can also lead to lewd thoughts, hence don’t watch TV?

Of course it’s more wholesome. I agree. All I’m saying is, don’t boycott a series which has these relatively minor elements in it. As mentioned earlier I assume a more charitable explanation. Same for fanservice. Yes a pervert will enjoy the bath scene despite the mist, someone else will not get excited by it because the character is a little girl. And there is nothing sexy about a little girl in a bath pondering her latest crisis of the day. Of course if it’s adult women almost fondling each other - it’s different.
Yes, prevention and guidance That’s my point. These analysis and conversations, I’ve been using the opportunity to discuss these things and the effects on the fandom.
Good.

Do not follow that, so I dunno. OK.

It starts out pretty generic looking. But it gets better.

Take home message I think is, as with everything be careful you’re not using anime as a porn substitute. However, as in real life, in magazines, the internet and TV, you will find attractive looking anime characters and they may be wearing short skirts, thing high socks and have well proportioned physiques. Try to see the human person behind these things.
She may be made of pixels, but she represents the concept of a human person and we should respect such. That she acts ditzy or the camera may sometimes show awkward angles don’t think sexually of her, but think of her as you’d think of yourself. And think of the story. And of course I’m not excusing excessive fanservice or hentai at all. Porn is porn and animated porn is like other porn to be avoided.

I know that (the phrase in bold). Cohabitation. Also, for hetero couples, that is dangerous too. Cultural acceptability… where I live, some parts of Catholicism are not culturally acceptable, but that is not an excuse, I think. There is the problem of scandal, too.

The TV example is exaggerated. Different levels of custody of the eyes and custody of the heart.
Of course it’s more wholesome. I agree. All I’m saying is, don’t boycott a series which has these relatively minor elements in it. As mentioned earlier I assume a more charitable explanation. Another problem with these is that I’m wary of recommending some stuff to people. Who knows how they are goin to react. And when one is aware of some things in the fandom, the preventions are not unfounded.
Do not follow that, so I dunno. OK.
I have years observing the development in fandoms, both in internet and real life… that, along with studies about the media, the modern world, history, etc. Also, I’m an Illustrator and Graphic Designer, so I’m more aware of these things.

And I don’t even need to go searching for problems… for example, I go an anime blog, for reading about new season shows, etc. I read the comments, or the articles… or I go to an anime forum, or in an art site, I see a gallery, and read something from the “diary” or journal of the artist and I learn something troublesome. Or, I go to my University’s anime, manga and caricature course, I’m sitting in a table with other people, or with friends, I wait a little and listen, and sometimes I hear what weird stuff they’re into, or how some series have affected them, etc. Or the friends of said people, in Facebook debates. The other day I saw this young girl that was pro lgbt and was speaking of the recognition of five genders (she thinks she is being vanguardist? some people in Tumblr believe that there are 16 genders, ha).

Or the things some teachers were teaching in publicity, merchandising and pseudo-philosophy classes… or in some classes, I went to other tables to look at my classmates’s works, or in the expositions of works from other semesters or classes (or my same class) or how some parts of the fandom are engaged in social engineering… the effects of some series in people (known or unknown to the authors)… or the stuff that are teaching in Psychology classes (I have spoken to some practising Catholic friends that are in that career in my University). There is a really trobling situation, that crosses with other areas.
It starts out pretty generic looking. But it gets better.

I know about that. I wish more people in the fandom knew that. I have been trying to explain similar things to people before.

God Bless you!

Guys we are really bad about this whole “post here regularly to keep the thread from drifting down the memory hole” thing, aren’t we? 😛
My anime watching has always been sort of hot cold. But lately my time has been occupied playing Pokemon (Red Version) on the gameboy emulator on my tablet. Though I noticed that Pokemon was put on Netflix recently, LOL. I watched the first episode last night. 😛

Ever since your chastisement here :D, we’ve collected 30+ posts in about 3 days. Are u happy now? :p:D

Uh oh, careful now! XD If u get sucked too much into the series, your social life may disappear as the TV series is now up to 795 eps, and ongoing! ~ One of the great mysteries of the world, I think, is the question of when will Ash or whomever is the main lead now, lol, become a Pokémon master? 😛

LOL, I don’t think that will become a problem. The show moves too slowly to ever suck me into it. (I was never a big fan when it first aired, though it was entertaining enough at that age with nothing else to watch. It was just as corny and annoying as I remembered, and Team Rocket didn’t even make an appearance in the first episode.

Folks please see and comment on the Miyazaki post in the Pop Media forum… if you will. What do you think?

It’s attitudes like Miyazaki’s which make me think that there is plenty of wholesomeness in Studio Ghibli works. Contrast that with Hollywood. Miyazaki may not be a Christian person but his views would probably resonate more with ours than with that of Hollywood.

Nice one. He has done various sharp critiques

Have you read the recent one about otaku in the industry?

No. But I was aware that he was not happy with the state of the anime industry.

Miyazaki has very traditional views. They gel very well with our tradition.

I know there are some Steins;Gate fans here, so on the off chance one of u may be interested, the Visual Novel for the series is finally being released on March 31st, and they have a contest running in which they are giving away 1 free digital copy every day I believe starting today.

If interested in entering (which is easy), just check this post on their FB page. Pretty much all u have to do is *“tweet what you’re looking forward to in the game with ‪#‎futuregadgetlab‬ for a chance to win.” *
Took me like 10 seconds to do. ^.^ And it doesn’t appear like many people have entered so far. Last time I searched the specified hashtag, it looked like only around 20 people or so.

According to one of their tweets, I guess u basically have to send a tweet each day to be entered since they only look at the tweets from the last 24 hours.

Of the ones I have watched, they have neither given me nightmares nor disgusted me. There is a LOT to be said for that.

I turned off Pom Poko. I can’t stand up to Grave of the Fireflies. And I missed The Wind Is Rising in theaters but will grab it on DVD.

I know I’m late but just wanted to give my 2 cents. The yaoi/yuri toned shows some blatant like Free/Sakura Trick some with more of a subtext like any magical girl show or CLAMP show aren’t really about homosexuality. It’s more about fanservice and fetishism. The core audience aren’t lgbt, rather otaku or fujoshi who like those sort of things.

Now that the season has ended I feel that this season wasn’t that good. I’ve only finished one show this season and it was Zvezda which ended somewhat disappointingly.

The only things that kept me watching this season were the continuing series from previous seasons.

Log Horizon ended very well and I’m happy it will be extended next fall.

Space Brothers also ended, but the manga will keep me going.

Gundam Build Fighters will end this week and the ride was oh so good. The battles between the “toy” gundams were very well executed and at many times superior to those in found in the main TV series. It was also good to see cameos/easter eggs of characters in previous Gundam shows that Tomino killed off, living a happy life in the Gundam Build Fighters universe. ;_; Chris, Bernie and Al enjoying the festivities.

Anyway, It’s nice to see Star Trek fans in here. So guys what are your favorite Space related anime. I’m more of a mecha/space opera type so I gravitate towards watching those type of anime.
