Agreed that you can control people through weight on their neck. I have done it to people and have had it done to me. What i havent done is use my knee to do this because it can seriously harm someone. I also dont think you can do it anyway to a person who isnt already subdued through another manuever, making one’s knee to the neck a cruel and dangerous form of punishment rather than a means to get someone under control.

He was on fentanyl and his body showed signs of recent meth use.
Why would you blame the victim? Any of that, if true, is not a capital offense.

Folks should not die (i.e. be killed) while being taken under arrest. Can you agree to that?

We’ll know more as the case develops. What we can’t do, no matter what, is restore Floyd to life or that retired black officer in St. Louis who was killed by “protesters” for trying to defend his friend’s pawn shop.

while I appreciate the appeal to data and facts,
And I appreciate any you would have. Demonstrating an appreciation of facts and data by presenting that upon which an opinion is based is more convincing than a statement of appreciation.

Please don’t call me sophomoric. I am not, at least on this issue.

Incarceration is harmful to individuals and families regardless of race. Incarceration has increased for all in the United States. I did not say race was an outlier. If you think the above statements make race an outlier, it is not my opinion.

Hello poster Pnewton, I didnt call you a sophomoric person. I said i think your argument in this case is (sophomoric). I certainly would not say that about the vast majority of your posting. However, I continue to believe it about your take here. I’m assuming you also believe there are weaknesses in my perspective? It doesnt make me think any less of you as a person nor does it lead me to question your character.

I also didnt say you believe racism is an outlier. I said that you recognized it as significant but treat it as an outlier. Again, a point about your argument not an insult.

A very important book, in my opinion.
If you haven’t, I recommend Lockdown America by Christian Parenti. Be forewarned, however: it is extremely, gut wrenchingly depressing.

It’s currently unavailable on Amazon and I don’t mean it’s out of stock.

It’s the American website, which means as a Canadian I would have to pay shipping fees.

Note: I should have mentioned that I visited the Canadian site.

Not your fault. I might buy it if no other options are available.

In fairness, you can couch foreign military intervention nicely under one of the responsibilities of the federal government as delineated in the Constitution. Not every problem America faces is authorized to be dealt with by the feds. Some are for states and local, and some are for other means.

But even then, we could certainly save a ton of money even if we didn’t spend it.

Kaepernick taking a knee is NOT about the National Anthem. Please take some time to read and educate yourself on this issue instead of just repeating the Trump party line.

It has never been about the National Anthem. A certain segment of society promotes that doctrine. I’ll leave it at that.
ps - I don’t even like / watch football. But I support Kaepernick because I GET it.

if it has nothing to do with the national anthem, then why did he choose to do his protesting during the national anthem?

please educate this poor misguided ignorant mouth breathing Trump voter!

Wouldn’t you agree it is an acceptable way to bring attention to a cause, given the past 10 days?

I understood the kneeling as a statement that he did not feel that Flag equally protected all Americans.

No, I wouldn’t.

Symbols of UNIFICATION are what bring us together. We should all love our country, our flag, our anthem. We shouldn’t love our country, flag, or anthem simply because they are a nation, a flag, or a song, but because they are symbols of what BRINGS US ALL TOGETHER.

There will ALWAYS be things that divide us. Even in times of our greatest unification (probably after the war of 1812, or during/immediately after WWII) there were things that divided us individually. Some were still enslaved, others had paid the dear price of war, some had their lands/property destroyed, lost loved ones. There was still the baptist vs catholic, the Republicans vs Democrats, the rich vs the poor, the city vs the country, etc etc ad nauseum.

But we were UNIFIED by spirit, by nationality, by greatness. A New York Jew, a South Carolina Baptist, and a midwestern Catholic all knew that we were AMERICANS, and we fought and died alongside and FOR each other because we were UNIFIED.

To disrespect the symbols of unity of our nation is destructive TO our nation. It divides us, highlighting what makes us different, and puts us at each other’s throats.

I absolutely agree that policing is out of control in our nation and NEEDS to be FIXED! We can do this in ways that do not divide us, but the media won’t tell us that. Instead of educating us on things like sovereign immunity, civil asset forfeiture, militarization of police tactics so that we can lean on our legislators to fix this, they spend enormous capital on denigrating Trump for going to a predominately black church that was just torched by rioters. Why do they do that? To keep us at each other’s throats.

So no, disrespecting our flag, the symbol of what should bring us TOGETHER, is even a less acceptable way to bring attention to a cause today than it was 10 days ago.

Don’t feel protected by the American flag? Try living somewhere else and see how much protection their flag gives you.

If I was a black man I would choke on “and liberty and justice for all”.

I understand that. Same thing if I were a native American Indian. Or someone with Irish ancestors who came here during the Potato Famine. Or an innocent person charged with a heinous crime and was forced to plead guilty because they didn’t have money to fight against the unlimited coercive power of a district attorney. Or the homeowner who had her house taken by the government by eminent domain so they could build a shopping mall (that was never built).

But would you choke on the “and liberty for all” if you were a Barak Obama? An Oprah Winfrey? Mohammed Ali? Colin Powell? How about Al Sharpton who has avoided paying his taxes for years? How about if you were a Ben Carson?

How about OJ Simpson?

The American idea, including “and liberty and justice for all” is an idea that will constantly be worked toward. We will ALWAYS be imperfect, and therefore we should ALWAYS try to do better. But the only way that we will ever get better is by coming TOGETHER. United We Stand, Divided We Fall is a true statement.

I will work together with you, if you will work with me, to bring us closer to the American idea of “and liberty and justice for all”.

Or, we can continue with the divisiveness led by the media, Kapaernik, and many of our politicians. This will lead to the end of the United States, and the great idea of “and liberty and justice for all” will cease to exist as we continue our descent into anarchy, tribalism, and chaos.
