Anti-gay edict stirs priest to step aside

A Catholic priest in Mesa has resigned as a pastor because of “aggressive anti-gay positions” coming from the pope in Rome and bishop in Phoenix.

The Rev. Leonard Walker, 58, who as pastor was chief executive of Queen of Peace church, is the first priest in the Phoenix Diocese to resign over church treatment of gay men, specifically a new Vatican document aimed at keeping gay men out of the priesthood.

Walker declined to disclose his sexual orientation, but he said he was no longer comfortable “wearing the uniform” of the priesthood

What a misleading headline. There is no “Anti-Gay Edict”. There is a document coming out affirmimg the Church’s long term teaching s that practicing Homosexuality is not compatible with the Priesthood,

“It’s like a Jew wearing a Nazi uniform,” Walker said. “I could no longer stay in that institution with any amount of integrity.”
His decision comes on the eve of the release of an instruction from the Vatican that limits entrance into seminaries primarily to heterosexual men.
Sounds like he made the correct move. I hope he understands his error and returns with cheerful obedience.

On the one hand, it is always sad to see a priest abandon his vocation.

On the other hand, the man in question has certainly lost more through the action he took than has the Church.

Blessings,

Gerry

Whatever happened to the vows he took? Are they meaningless?
He can’t win. You people seem to want any homosexual person out of the priesthood, celibate or not, and when he does leave, then he is criticized for leaving!!! THE CHURCH DICTATED THAT HE LEAVE, so he did.

Nope, he left because he refuses to obey. No one asked him to leave.

How do you figure? What did he do not to obey? Be a celibate homosexual?

The document said that anyone with deep seated homosexual tendencies should not be a priest. Well, he left-- you read between the lines. It sounds to me like he felt like he didn’t meet the criteria anymore.

He never met the criteria.

obey what??? If he is what I think he is, he is a celibate homosexual-- of course I could be wrong. But if so, then he did nothing to not obey. Would you rather he stayed and then complain that he is a homosexual?

He is rejecting the authority of the Church to regulate how Her practices and duties are carried out. He is saying he is right and the Church is wrong. That is not being obedient. He is not assenting to Her authority.

He is a priest. He gives assent to all the Church teaches and directs. This is particularly true when it concerns his public “opinions”. His words may easily cause confusion as to what the Church actually teaches and practices.

Wait…he did nothing to not obey?

Walking away from the priesthood is a huge something…doing so in protest over a forthcoming document is also a display of disobedience to the magesterium. What else could it be?

Sorry, I didn’t read that into it at all. When did he say the church is wrong and he is right? What I think he is saying, is I can’t win. I’m celibate but still homosexual and so if that’s not good enough, then I will leave–they seem to not want me in the priesthood anyway.

In the end it is that he want’s it his way. That means he places himself above the Church.
