That is unfortunately true. People only want to hear the clergy speak up on moral issues they agree with; those things other people need to hear, but …It is becoming more and more difficult for priests to speak out against anything. On one hand you have those asking priests to speak up on moral issues and then something like this happens, a priest speaks up and people get upset and smack at him. Our priests are going to need a lot of prayers today because what they are going to need to be saying to us is not going to be popular with the culture.
Take on any subject where society continues to move further and further from Catholic moral teaching and you are guaranteed to get skewered. One thing we were told in a homiletics class was that if we touch (even tangentially) on homosexuality, abortion, premarital sex, birth control, divorce, guns (either pro or against), or any of a host of other hot button topics, that we should have a copy of the homily ready because the bishop will receive angry complaints. Luckily our bishop would want a copy so that they can explain to the caller where the given cleric is correct, but still is disheartening that people have to complain about hearing the truth.
