People in eastern Ontario’s Prince Edward County are showing support for the gay community after a message in a Picton church bulletin warned that Catholics and Christians should stay away from “harmful” Pride events.

The message appeared in this week’s St. Gregory The Great Roman Catholic Church bulletin.

Tucked between a notice for a pot luck supper and gratitude for donations for a new church door, the message in full reads:

A reminder that Catholics and all other Christians should not attend LGBTQ2 “Pride Month” events held this month. They promote a culture and encourage activities that are contrary to Christian faith and morals. This is especially harmful to children because it could lead them away from God’s revealed Truth. Even in “The County” there are Pride flags and banners flying courtesy of the Government. Think…these are your tax dollars at work!

What exactly is surprising about the priest’s reaction? Some people see it as a “deranged view to have” or that they are “appalled” at what the priest said. Is it really controversial for a priest to warn about a pride event? It’s not like we agree with all of what pride stands for.

I think our Catholic schools want to be more inclusive rather than provide authentic Catholic teachings that provide a better, more Christian message about God’s love for SSA folk. I feel this even in my Catholic school (I live in Canada). Am I wrong to feel this?

I just don’t even understand what the big outrage is, and this is coming from a Catholic who experiences SSA.

A bunch of silly outrage over basic Catholic teaching, just like the Bishop Tobin tweet. Again, nothing actually attacking gay people, just a reminder about what the Church believes.

While I’m glad his Archbishop didn’t sanction him, I’m disappointed that he didn’t support the pastor more.

They may just be upset at what they take as an implication that homosexuality is something children learn.

I think the key to balancing truth and kindness is in the Catechism:
CCC 2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.

When one has a deep-seated inclination that constitutes a lilfelong moral and emotional trial, others around that person have to be very sensitive to treat that person with compassion and sensitivity, lest they feel that they are considered more morally defective or having less human dignity than other people who feel they have more “typical” or “acceptable” moral trials. You understand this, but it is possible you are at a position in your life where you are more secure in your position as a Christian. As you know, however, other people have a lot of difficulty reconciling their feelings and inclinations with Christian moral law and sometimes even more difficulty reconciling the trials of their children (and the very likable partners of their children) with that law.

I’m just putting that out as a possibility.

I don’t know how Catholic schools work in Canada, but, if this were in the US, I’d imagine this is one of those Catholic schools that dilute Catholic teaching to keep enrollment up. Unfortunately, Catholic school is unaffordable to a lot of actually practicing Catholic families, so they need to draw in more secular people with deep pockets by making it seem like just another private school.

Just like the other letter a week ago from a Bishop that I read and i stated in that thread, this Preist is doing his job and shepherding his flock.

As I stated in that post I truly believe the majority of people that take issue with what this Priest wrote are either not Catholic to begin with or fallen away Catholics. I have an hard time believing a regular Mass attending Catholic would be shocked or take issue with this letter.

What amazes me is that this LGBQT…, movement, is so shocked a Priest or Bishop would advise his flock to not attend a Pride rally/march/parade. We love these people but believe and the Church teaches the act of homosexuality (not the attraction) is a sin, it can not end with the creation of life. The majority Christian faith (in morals) and in particular Catholic Church has stayed firm in its teachings for over 2,000 years. Why would any clergy support these Pride events. It is bad enough that society is trying to force us to accept and promote these views, but now they want to force our faith communities to do the same. This is one of the many areas where us Catholics, other Christian communities and our Jewish brothers and sisters need to unite and stand for morality.

I don’t believe same sex attraction is a choice, I don’t know why it exists. However acting upon these desires is a choice. Just like the rest of humanity ssa people are called to live a chaste life.

@theCardinalbird
So in my long rambling, lol, you are not wrong in what you feel/think. These are actually a small percentage that participates and/or supports these events. The majority of people fall anywhere from don’t care one way or the other to against participating in these. A small percentage trying to push the rest of us to accept what they believe and if we don’t they want to turn us into villains.

It is a clear example of the complete “intolerance” of those who conveniently demand everybody be “tolerant” toward them, but deny that same courtesy to those who do not agree with their lifestyle.

Having read a lot of stuff in the bulletins in my life, I think it’s best to ignore most if not all of the editorializing in them.

Many Catholic parents have children who are gay. At least that is what I have noticed since becoming Catholic. Or maybe they have another close relative who might be
gay.
Personally, I see nothing wrong with
what was in the bulletin, but I think
this explains why some might be
angry.

It’s nothing new under the sun for people to cherry pick what moral teachings they want to embrace or reject.
Team this with propaganda from LGBT activists and an anxious desire to be hip and cool and there you have it.
Yummy yummy Outrage.

I just don’t even understand what the big outrage is, and this is coming from a Catholic who experiences SSA.
Yeah, either the article left out any explanation, or the people are just outraged but didn’t (or can’t) articulate why beyond, “We don’t like the teaching.” Unfortunately, that also means any benefit that could be gained is lost, as these people just come across as caring little about the things of God, which is really summed up in this line:
Crenna, who is Catholic, decided not to send her children to mass on Friday in protest.
They may just be upset at what they take as an implication that homosexuality is something children learn.
I’d like to see the statistics on the number of kids who have been turned gay from a parade.
While the priest didn’t really expand on what he meant by “lead them away”, I think jumping to the conclusion that he’s claiming homosexuality is “learned” is unfair. He could just be pointing out that the children may think what is going on at the parade is a celebration of what’s good. Obviously, that would be a bad message to send them.

Sexuality isn’t set in stone. It is more fluid than it is portrayed. Your habits and your experiences affect your desires.

Attending a gay pride event isn’t going to turn someone gay, but it is contrary to catholic teaching as the priest said. It is representative of an ideology that is contrary to Catholicism.

I have seen footage of some gay parades and I am not sure I would want my young children there not

It is ludicrous to insinuate there would be an official doctrine on parades. It is what mght be
occurring at the parades.

Would you point me to the official doctrine on parades?
Really? an official doctrine on parades?

It is what is happening at the “gay pride” parades or events. The events or “parades” give the impression that there is nothing wrong with homosexual activity and youth may make choices they might not have otherwise made. Sexual choices that put their souls in danger…

They promote a culture and encourage activities that are contrary to Christian faith and morals. This is especially harmful to children because it could lead them away from God’s revealed Truth.” from the bulletin in the OP

A bulletin is not a vehicle for setting Church doctrine.

A parade is a parade. The St Patrick’s Day Parade is a parade where most participants and side liners are sidewalk licking drunk. That does not mean Catholic are forbidden from attending these green secular parades.

A Marti Gras parade is also filled with drunkeness, nudity, all sorts of bawdy goings on. Catholics are not forbidden from going to Mardi Gras.

One can attend a function with sinners where people are sinning and not be there for the sin.

The priest was reminding people that the Church does have certain doctrines on marriage and a gay pride event, whether it is a parade or whatever, is not promoting following Church teaching. As a matter of fact, usually quite the opposite.

St. Patrick’s Day parades and Mardi Gras do not have the foundational purpose of promoting something that goes against Church teaching.

The better question is if pride parades encourage overall moral laxity.

The concern is for support and normalization of objectively sinful lifestyles. It’s not about kids “turning gay”, but rather fostering ideas that Catholic moral teachings is secondary to society’s lived experience. If you want to support people who are bullied, then focus on all bullying and respect of the person without saying respect this group by helping them celebrate turning away from God.

No, you are not wrong to feel this at all.

It is becoming more and more difficult for priests to speak out against anything. On one hand you have those asking priests to speak up on moral issues and then something like this happens, a priest speaks up and people get upset and smack at him. Our priests are going to need a lot of prayers today because what they are going to need to be saying to us is not going to be popular with the culture.
