I just bought Slayer’s first CD, so right now I’m going old school with heavy metal.

As far as new? Goblinc*ck is pretty cool. Worth checking out

Hello, another girl here…there are quite a few girls on this thread. LOL

I never liked wimpy music or even chic movies for that matter.

I was riding somewhere with my sister the other day and had to suffer through her Justin Timberlake cd…shudders…sobs

I have to give her credit though, last year she was in her first metal mosh pit! I do not even like those. I am too short and people think it is cute to force me to body surf! But my sister is a big girl, she can hold her own. LOL

I like Filter and Dave Navarro’s stuff, is that considered metal? No thanks on the megadeath/iron maiden stuff.
 
I’m barely getting into Metallica. 🙂 “One” is a really good song, and that’s only the beginning for me. :yup:

I think I’m more into hardcore punk and death metal. Rise Against and Dethklok are awesome! 😃

Filter and Dave Navarro’s bands would be considered rock (probably alternative rock), definitely not metal 🙂

I’ve heard some of it before, but it doesn’t do anything for me. I prefer my metal lyrics to be at least somewhat understandable.

LOL, I’ve never heard it referred to as growl metal before! The actual name of the genre is death metal. I prefer the derisive term “cookie monster vocals” 😃

I’m not into it, as I like my vocals clean and melodic 👍 Although I have to admit I don’t mind a little bit of it in my power metal (e.g. Epica does it really well; a great song as an introduction to Epica, it has less growls than most of their songs: youtube.com/watch?v=FfLtA8SkmVw).

I’m with you. I don’t generally care for it, but some bands I like use them well (and sparingly), such as Ayreon and Adagio. All things in moderation, I suppose…

Yea, with you guys on the growling. It just seems too contrived and silly to me.

It’s a bummer too cause there is a Christian Metal band with really good music, but they sing in the growl style and I just can’t get past it. They are called “Mortification” – check them out on YouTube.

Eternal Decision is another really good Christian metal band i discovered recently with teh help of another post.
 
Yeah, Mortification is a true classic of Christian metal and Steve Rowe is a legend. I also can’t get past the vocals.

However, I am a big fan of the band he had in the 80s before he started Mortification.

More of an Iron Maiden sound with clean vocals. Unfortunately, the vocals are not very good, but they are clean! I remember I wrote a letter to their fan club address way back in the late 80s and I got like a 4 page hand-written letter back from one of the guys in the band. That will make you a fan for life! 😃

That’s awesome! I picked up Mortification’s EnVision Evangeline a number of years ago knowing nothing about the band except that they were Christian metal. The first track is the 19 minute title track, and I was really digging it for the several minute instrumental intro. I was getting really excited about the band. Then, he started singing (or, rather, he started growling) :(. I just couldn’t get into it after that.
 
I have a handful of Mortification albums too. I really liked the guitars and drums and the whole sound he has going, but eventually I just got tired of the vocals and stopped listening to Mortification all together. The best Christian band I think I’ve ever heard has to be Tourniquet.

I’ve been a fan of theirs since I picked up “Pathogenic Occular Dissonance” on a whim at a Christian bookstore. I really like their “Vanishing Lessons” album.

I often think of teen age boys with greasy hair and zits when I think of metal fans. Beavis and Butt head types. I went to school with kids like that. Nothing wrong with it. Just a little silly.
 
In fact, your mental image is not far from the truth in most cases! Metal music appeals heavily to the outcast and the marginalized, both musically and lyrically. When you’re not popular in high school, it’s a refuge (it was for me). This appeal to the outsiders is one of the reasons I think Christian metal bands are so important: they speak to people - generally young men - that cannot be reached by the church in any other way.
