Two under-appreciated bands from the 80s: Aldo Nova and April Wine.

Wow, I haven’t heard either of those names in a while! I always loved Aldo Nova’s song “Fantasy”.

How about Judas Priest, British Steel? If not that one then I’m sure one of their other albums.

I’ll have to agree with y’all on Iron Maiden being amazing, but I really stick to the Paul Dianno days as opposed to Bruce. Don’t get me wrong, he’s good, but he’s no Paul Dianno.

Any fans of The Showdown in here? Give them a listen.

And IMO (though I wouldnt call them metal) Motorhead is the band of all bands.

Me thinks under a blood red sky is from their defenders of the faith album. Which is an all around solid album.

Wow… Nuclear Assault! I haven’t heard that name in ages. I never really got into them, but I have heard of them. I could’ve seen Death Angel when they opened for Pantera before they broke up but at the time my cash flow didn’t allow for overpriced tickets.

To the poster before that didn’t think Motorhead was metal … Yes, they are most certainly metal.

I had friends would were big into Nuclear Assault and Death Angel back in high school. I never got into them.

One of my favorite obscure metal bands from back in the 80s is Meliah Rage. They were kind of a thrashier Metal Church. In fact, I saw them open for Metal Church a few years ago.

I think I listen to obscure bands more than I listen to well-known bands. Of course, I guess it depends on the circle of people you’re conversing with! When people ask what bands I like, I always ask them if they’ve heard of Dream Theater. If they haven’t, there’s little chance they’ve heard of any of the other bands I listen to. On this thread, it’s probably a different story!

Some of my favorites that tend towards the more obscure side include: The Awful Truth, Masquerade, Mind Bomb, Radakka, & Cruachan. Has anyone ever heard of Skyclad or Wuthering Heights? I’ve been listening to some bands for so long, I can’t tell whether or not they’d be considered obscure. After all, if I know them so well, how could they possibly be unknown?

Wow, you’ve heard of Mind Bomb? I’m impressed. They’re so obscure they don’t even have a Wikipedia entry (if you search for “Mind Bomb”, all you get is the album “Mind Bomb” by The The). If you’ve ever seen the movie “Air Heads” (with Brendan Fraser, Steve Buschemi, and Adam Sandler before any of them were famous), you can actually see a Mind Bomb poster in the background at the radio station. The movie also includes a cameo of one of my favorite bands, the Galactic Cowboys (appearing as the “Sons of Thunder”). Yes, I am a nerd.

Dream Theater and Savatage served as the gateway to obscurity for me back in the mid-90s. My newfound access to the internet led me to seek out similar bands, which brought me into the European power/prog metal scene. Now, Blind Guardian, Rhapsody of Fire, Kamelot, and Nightwish are about as mainstream as I get.

OK, I am asking this out of pure naivety, but is the term “Judas Priest” a curse of some kind? It sounds strange.

I think the only place I ever heard it spoken (besides in reference to the band) was in the movie “The Exorcist.”

Perry, the editor of the Daily Planet, used to say it all the time in “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.”

It is an odd phrase. I wonder where it originates from. I tend to put it in the same category as “For Pete’s sake!”

Just thought I’d toss in here a prog metal song that’s always connected with my Catholicism (at least the chorus). The song is Out of the Ashes by Symphony X. The chorus is:

As someone who didn’t come to Christianity until my 20s, I’d definitely consider my younger years a destructive fire in many ways, as I struggled to figure out how the heck I was supposed to be conducting myself. I just really get fired up (no pun intended) during that chorus!

Wampa’s post got me thinking about lyrics. Who are people’s favorite heavy metal lyricists?

I listen to a lot of bands whose first language is not English, so I’m usually just impressed if the lyrics are grammatically correct. But, there are a few bands that stand out for me. One is Skyclad. Martin Walkyier was the founder and lyricist for the band’s first 10 years. Although he’s a self-proclaimed pagan, and very critical of pretty much everything (religion, government, science, etc.), he’s definitely a gifted writer. He employs a lot of word play, puns, homonyms, alliteration, etc. From the song “Vintage Whine”:

Since it’s drawn - I must sup the cellarage of sorrow
yet fate refills my tarnished cup each time I drain the dregs
Their poison cannot kill me - new strength from it I’ll borrow
my maudlin is a caudle that would fill a thousand kegs.

The first time I listened to that song, I had to keep cracking open the dictionary to look up all the unfamiliar words. My favorite song of theirs is Cancer of the Heart.

Seems we made our greatest error when we named it at the start
for though we called it “Human Nature” - it was Cancer of the heart

To show compassion makes you weak
so don’t dare turn the other cheek,
Try hard to hide the fear you feel
with a heart of stone and nerves of steel
A naked-ape in the human zoo
you amaze me with the things you do
I watch your pride before the fall
and realise I don t belong at all.

Once I became more devout in my faith, I struggled with whether or not to continue listening to this band. This song really hit me as a connecting point. This song is all about Original Sin (whether or not that was Walkyier’s intent). He is very much aware of the evil that men do, I think to the point where it is almost all he sees. It was then I started to make a concerted effort to pray for the guy. I’d love to see him use his gifts as a writer in the service of the Church.

Pain of Salvation is another band that writes lyrics well. Their song Trace of Blood is about a young couple experiencing a miscarriage from the man’s point of view. It’s a heart-wrenching song, particularly if you’ve ever been close to someone who has had a miscarriage. The song could even be considered pro-life, IMO.

I never saw your face and now you’re gone without a trace
Except the trace of blood that’s deeply scarred into my eyes To fill your place
It’ll never be the same but I will love you just the same
I was prepared to be your father How can I ever prepare for that again?

On the Christian side of things, I’ve been very impressed with Theocracy’s writing abilities, too (even if Absolution Day has that little anti-sacramental barb thrown in). They write lyrics that are thoroughly Christian without being hokey.

Anyone else have any bands that write good lyrics?
