Anyone on here remember the old Catholic Answers forum?

Did you know they put it in an Android app? I can play it on my phone.

I remember at one point that we were only allowed 5 posts per day in political threads during the 2016 US election cycle.
Back when I first joined CAF, political discussions weren’t allowed at all. You couldn’t even use the word “Democrat” or “Republican”. I think it was with the 2008 election that they had a separate “Politics” sub-forum sponsored by “Catholic Answers Action” (to be distinct from Catholic Answers). But then after they won some legal battle, it became okay to discuss politics on the general forum.

I always felt sorry for Robert Bay after that happened. His job became much more difficult. 🥴

I do kind of miss those days when I could go to the World News category to actually find news that wasn’t related to politics.

I agree about the eye candy. Husband and I like to play together so it’s better if it’s a non-PC platform for us. We’ve been digging into Diablo lately, which is okay but only makes me yearn from the good ol’ days all the more.

I think it was next to our username. A green dot I think if you were on. Black if off?
Lol! I was thinking that all were listed in paragraph form after the listings of threads, along with birthdays, but I might have the old format mixed with another forum which I frequented. I don’t remember dots, so I probably learned to overlook them, since I didn’t know what they meant? No clue.

You’ve reminded me that the old forum also used to tell us on the main page whose birthday it was – and we received email birthday greetings from the forum. I’m not sure if that happens anymore. Now the only way we know about birthdays is by randomly seeing the cake next to someone’s name. Not a big deal to me but another shift.

No, you’re right – the old forum used to do that, too, along with the dots.

Like @redbetta, I’d quite forgotten about that. I don’t think it makes any difference, one way or the other.
It did come in handy if you were having a back-and-forth conversation as it made it easy to see when the other person had stepped away and wouldn’t be replying right away. But it was one of those “stalker-friendly” features, so it’s probably best that it is gone.

Forums in general have dramatically declined in popularity in favor of other platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, etc. I know of a lot of forums that have simply closed up and/or become ghost towns because that’s not where most people are carrying on with their online conversations nowadays.
I find I prefer internet forums now much more than way back. I think that a lot of people came into forums back then looking for connection and friendship more than discussion and that aspect is much more satisfied now by Facebook groups. I remember internet forums where awful ‘cliques’ developed and would gang up on people who’s views they didn’t like. In the forums that I’m on now, that doesn’t happen near as much.
