RELIGIOUS RIGHTS REJECTED

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on today’s Senate vote to table the “Respect for Rights of Conscience Act”:

The 51-48 vote to table an amendment by Sen. Roy Blunt that would guarantee rights of conscience for the employees of religious institutions does not end the debate.

There is a bill sponsored by Rep. Jeff Fortenberry that would also secure conscience rights for people of faith, and it has already garnered a near-majority of House members. Also available as a possible remedy are the rights encoded in the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. And, of course, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on the ObamaCare legislation later this month; a decision is expected in late spring.

The Obama administration has chosen to shut out the Catholic voice (save for the dissidents). Consider the following:

• Archbishop William Lori has said that there was no discussion between administration officials and the bishops prior to the decisions of January 20 and February 10 that effectively mandated Catholic institutions to pay for abortion-inducing drugs, contraception and sterilization.

• *Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Kathleen Sebelius has admitted under questioning that the Justice Department was never asked to consider the religious-rights implications of her draconian directive.

•  Dr. Linda Rosenstock, who served on a committee of the Institute of Medicine that was empowered to study the HHS mandate, said on Tuesday that at no time did anyone on the committee ever weigh the issue of religious rights.

Obama does not want to dialogue—he wants to dictate. Game on.

Biiiig surprise. Our Catholic senators, Murray and Cantwell, opposed the bill. Just shocking. I can't believe it.

Dont those two just make you SICK? Murray sounds dumb as a board when she speaks. Why is it that such wonderful beautiful states (Oregon and Washington) manage to only elect the most rabid liberals available? All you have to have is a D behind your name and you win regardless of lack of intelligence, ability or integrity.

All the other “Catholic” senators who voted no need to do a serious examination of conscious. (or see if they can locate a conscious)

Dolan blasts White House contraception plan as 'freedom of religion battle’

It’s holy war!

Cardinal Timothy Dolan ramped up the battle with the White House today, blasting the government for a controversial new regulation that would require providing free contraceptive services to workers of religious institutions.

“Don’t impose your teaching upon us and make us do as a church what we find unconscionable to do!” the freshly minted prince of the church told a roaring crowd of 1,000 at Holy Trinity Diocesan HS in Hicksville.

In a blistering attack interlaced with humor, Dolan never mentioned President Obama by name — only his policies.

But he did bring up President Lyndon B. Johnson.

“President Johnson said, ‘As an American I look to the church — I look to religion as a beehive. If you leave them alone they’re going to give you tons of their honey. But if you stick your head in there, you’re going to get stung bad.’”

Washington softened its stance on the prickly issue last month, saying that insurers would foot the bill, not the Church’s schools, hospitals or clinics.

But on his blog, Dolan, who was elevated to cardinal on Feb. 18, said that he and the bishops, “are still as worried as ever.”

He told the crowd of church leaders that the battle over the US Health and Human Services regulation is bigger than contraception.

“It is a freedom of religion battle,” Dolan said. “We are talking about an unwarranted, unprecedented radical intrusion into the interior life of integrity of a church’s ability to teach, serve and sanctify in its own.”

Dolan, the president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops and de facto leader of the American Catholic Church, didn’t shy away from his leadership role, nor from controversy.

“I suppose we could say there might be some doctor who would say to a man who is suffering some sort of sexual dysfunction, ‘You ought to start visiting a prostitute to help you, and I will write you a prescription, and I hope the government will pay for it.

“We live in an era that seems to discover new rights every day and then expects government and culture and society to pay for it. The church emphasizes responsibility more than rights.”

The Church is against providing something they consider evil. I’m sure there are things you consider wrong. If the government can compel the Church to do what She sees as evil, despite the protections in our constitution, it can eventually force anybody, including you, to do what you consider evil, because it has proven that the constitution means nothing.
