Am I the only one who finds it sad and ironic that the 2 biggest supporters of Obama and Obamacare for these issues are Catholic women—Sebelius and Pelosi?

It’s not ironic. It’s calculated. Especially Sbelius.

Catechizing the faithful, many of whom are probably not aware of some of these issues and teachings will take a lot of time. I listen to a couple of Catholic radio stations during the day. I am hearing call after call from Catholics saying that their Priests are FINALLY bringing up the subject of contraception, abortion inducing drugs, and sterilization. I think most Catholics understand the abortion issue. But the subtleties about abortion inducing drugs, methods of contraception that are allowed (NFP) and sterilization are not frequent subjects. As you said, this is a teachable moment!

Here is the problem. Our parish has a robust adult faith program. We had a class on the new mass translation. We are currently studying Fr. Barron’s Catholicism series.

Guess who NEVER goes to these?

They are CINO’s. You know the saying going to a church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than walking into a garage makes you a car.

PS BIden is also Catholic …?

This was excellent. Thank you for sharing it!

Here is the contact info for the priest giving that wonderful and courageous homily. I sent him an e-mail thanking him for his courage. If you are so inclined, you might do the same. I imagine he caught some flack for that one and could probably use the support.

The Supreme Court ruled in 1971 Wisconsin v. Yoder that compulsory school-attendance law to them violated their rights under the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment, made applicable to the States by the Fourteenth Amendment."

The U.S. Supreme Court held as follows[2]:

1.States cannot force individuals to attend school (insert: purchase contraceptive services) when it infringes on their First Amendment rights. In this case, the state of Wisconsin interfered with the practice of a legitimate religious belief.

2.Not all beliefs rise to the demands of the religious clause of the First Amendment. There needs to be evidence of true and objective religious practices, instead of an individual making his or her standards on such matters. The Amish way of life is one of deep religious convictions that stems from the Bible. It is determined by their religion, which involves their rejection of worldly goods and their living in the Biblical simplicity. The modern compulsory secondary education is in sharp conflict with their way of life**.(insert: the Catholic church has never believed in birth control or abortion)**

3.With respect to the State of Wisconsin’s argument that additional modern education beyond 8th grade is necessary to prepare citizens to participate effectively and productively in America’s political system, the Court disagreed. It argued that the State provided no evidence showing any great benefit to having two extra years in the public schools**.(insert: The women who really want birth control or abortions could still get them for free or at low cost as they do now.) **

4.The Court found no evidence that by leaving the Amish community without two additional years of schooling, young Amish children would become burdens on society. To the contrary, the Court argued that they had good vocational background to rely upon. It was the State’s mistaken assumption that Amish children were ignorant. Compulsory education after elementary school was a recent movement that developed in the early 20th century in order to prevent child labor and keep children of certain ages in school. The State of Wisconsin’s arguments about compelling the school attendance were therefore less substantial. (insert: Who would be harmed here except for the people of faith.)

5.Responding to Justice Douglas’ dissent, the Court argued that the question before it was about the interests of the parents to exercise free religion, and did not relate to the child’s First Amendment’s rights. As such, the argument pertaining to the child’s right to exercise free religion was irrelevant in this case.

*Is it just me or could the same logic be held for the one who is being forced to comply with the HHS mandate. I guess that is why the media keeps harping on the statistic of 98% of catholic women having used b.c. at some point. Maybe I am just reaching too far out there. I am really disturbed at the way our government is out to make unlawful citizens out faithful Christians *

You got it! In our parish we are now targeting the adults with on-line classes and a once-a-month session with our pastor. We have an excellent catechetical series for the kids that has been in place now about three years, but guess why we still have 7th graders who cannot recite even basic prayers? They never pray at home, nor do they associate family life with a Catholic identity; some do not even attend Sunday Mass regularily and their attendence at religious ed classes is absymal! Not their fault - with the high divorce rate they spend weekends with different parents - seems there’s always one who couldn’t care less about their child’s faith formation.

With this negative influence how do we turn things around? We’re trying our best, we really are but the most we can hope for is that the seed that has been planted will one day take root when they’re old enough to make decisions on their own.

Relating to this thread, this is my fear: After not hearing anything regarding life issues from the pulpit for a very long time now, and having little foundation for an active faith life, what are these people going to do when/if they finally hear true doctrine being preached? I suspect many will only resent it and be alienated; even leave the Church altogether. But now is the time for our bishops to teach the Catholic faith so we can draw strength from it for the battle. Our own efforts will be nothing if we don’t turn to God. One more thought…not only does the average Catholic (at least in our area) not know their faith, neither do they know what their rights as citizens are - they pay no attention to what this government is doing. A deadly combination if you ask me.

Absolutely agree with you. The ignorance of the public on such important matters is frightening. Watch those “man on the street” features where a passer by will be shown a photo of a well known government official…say the VP and the people look totally confused. But show a TV celebrity…Snooki for example and they know who it is. YIKES. I just hope these people do not vote.

As to getting Catholics more educated about their faith and life issues, I think if done in a logical and thoughtful way it is very very possible. I listen to Catholic Radio and EWTN and some of their programs are amazing as they talk about how working with the natural functions of your body is healthier physically, mentally and emotionally. Given that I grew up an atheist with a pro abortion attitude, anything is possible with good catechesis!

You are so right. If only Catholics know their own faith, we will have a different picture of our country.

He disgusts me.
You are not the only one he disgusts. For him to misuse the first amendment to promote the Obama admin’s pro abortion agenda, at any cost, is disgusting.

Why is Holder allowed to talk about legal matters after his Fast and Furious involvement?

Or his lawsuit against Hosanna-Tabor?

“That’s especially true looking at the compromise the president and Secretary [Kathleen] Sebelius put in place,” --Eric Holder

Two comments: First, there is no compromise in place. The original HHS mandate has been finalized. No compromise language has been substituted.

Second, the proposed compromise is no compromise at all. It still requires Catholic institutions to provide coverage which is morally reprehensible to them. And it forces Catholic insurance agencies and Catholic employers to violate their conscience.
