Archbishop Sample installed as Archbishop in Portland, OR

A great challenge lies ahead, but I think he is up to it. Was just in Portland Saturday and Sunday. A lot of work to do there…
 
Hopefully he can do something about that modernist purveyer of vanilla pedestrian banality, Oregon Catholic Press.

I know it’s not a laughing matter, but I like your description.

Maybe you can write a letter to the new bishop to ask him? Perhaps with different adjectives though. 🙂

Perhaps in the manner of Bishop Finn taking the National “Catholic” Reporter to task for its libertine theology.

Gee, and I thought I was being most restrained with my adjectives (my thoughts are certainly not as charitable as the words I used :bigyikes:

One little difference.

Bishop Finn has no direct connection to the “independent” National Schismatic Fishwrap.

The Archbishop of Portland is, by virtue of his position, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of OCP.

In other words, he might, just maybe, have a little more luck than +Finn.

Isn’t he FSSP? I suspect that there will be some gnashing of teeth and other variations of consternation at the publication. A test of their umm, faith, so to speak.

I called the Fraternity to find out. As it turns out, this was a misunderstanding on my part. He is a friend of the Fraternity, but Bishops are not members of it. He has performed some ordinations for them. That is apparently where I misunderstood. Sorry for any confusion.

yes…rumour has it that the DRE’s were not allowed to order materials for next year until after he was installed.

I was at the installation Mass…it was wonderful!!!
 
Archbishop Sample is a friend of the Traditional Latin Mass and as such, one might expect he will take a dim view of liberal excesses. He is somewhat cagey about it in his interview, here, but I think it’s pretty clear he’s on the orthodox/conservative side- the right side, Deo Gratias! And thanks to our beloved Pope Benedict XVI for making one last great appointment on the Left Coast before he rode off into the sunset!

Oh lucky you! I hoped to go but couldn’t get off work. Our DRE and three of my fellow RCIA team mates attended. One of them had some pictures…it was CROWDED way beyond their expectations! My RCIA buddy said seeing a whole line of Bishops processing in was unbelievable. Very impressive. I am hopeful it was videoed and will be available soon. I know the sound was recorded so if nothing else I can listen.

As to Archbishop Sample…WOW he IS up to the land of crunchy granola people, the fruits nuts and flakes living in Moscow on the Willamette. The Left Coast of the state to just past Eugene is totally secular, very Leftist. As Archbishop Sample noted, this is very fertile ground and he has many opportunities!!

A friend is head of an Heirloom Rose society and said that Oregon has a really strong history in Catholicism between Mother Joseph coming out here and establishing the Sisters of Providence (huge hospital system now) and a lot of Catholic fur traders who settled in what is called “French Prairie” We have a number of communities for Monks/Priests and Religious plus a very busy seminary. So the foundation is here.

I am looking forward to seeing Archbishop Sample in Portland just as the wonderful Archbishop who was appointed to San Francisco (Cordileone) is the right man at the right time in the place that needs them.

I understand Archbishop Sample is quite the stickler regarding liturgy and sacred music. Our music director has already received his written guides to what is appropriate. Wonder if that means no guitars and dancing in the aisle 😃

Wonderful, thank you. Our past Archbishop was a holy and dedicated servant but didn’t get involved in sacred music to my knowledge. Our current Music Director is wonderful and apparently has this letter for guidance. Our previous Music Director was brilliant and talented but a little too much of a rock n roller. We would do the Gloria that sounded like something from the set of HeeHaw :eek: Used to drive a bunch of us nutz!
