What do Protestants make of the following verse:
1 John 4:16 - God is love, and whoever lives in love lives in union with God and God lives in union with him.
Could this imply that a peaceful and loving non-christian (eg: muslims) can make it to heaven?
I realise the Protestant argument is based on Jesus; But considering Jesus is God, and God is Love, then that would imply that Jesus is Love and Love is Jesus. Therefore, whoever lives in love lives in Jesus. Right?
First of all, there is so much more to God’s character than just love. He is holy, unable to tolerate sin in His presence. He is righteous. He is just, demanding punishment for sin. The Bible clearly says that God’s wrath abides on those who do NOT accept the offer of salvation. Everybody loves to quote John 3:16 but they stop there and don’t read the verse in context. Shall we be true to the text and read it…oh let’s:
Joh 3:16 For this is the way God loved the world: he gave his one and only Son that everyone who believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Joh 3:17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him.
Joh 3:18 The one who believes in him is not condemned.
The one who does not believe has been condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God.
Notice that condemned already part. There are other places in the Bible which back this up.
Joh 3:36 The one who believes in the Son has eternal life. The one who rejects the Son will not see life, **but God’s wrath remains on him. **
Notice God’s wrath REMAINS on him, not comes on him. This means that God’s wrath is already on the one who does not believe in the Son.
Rom 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Rom 5:9 Much more then, because we have now been declared righteous by his blood, **we will be saved through him from God’s wrath. **
Rom 5:10 For if while **we were enemies **we were reconciled to God through the death of his son, how much more, since we have been reconciled, will we be saved by his life?
Notice those who are not born again are God’s enemies and will experience His wrath.
Jesus came to reconcile two parties at enmity with one another God and man. Jesus as God in the flesh is the only one who could offer a holy and perfect sacrifice to satisfy God’s standards. What do you think the word “propitiation” means?

Rom 3:21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,
Rom 3:22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference;
Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Rom 3:24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
Rom 3:25
whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed,
Rom 3:26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
Jesus’ sacrifice appeased the just wrath of a holy and righteous God. To say that someone can just waltz into heaven by being a “good person” is to spit in the eye of God and blaspheme the very sacrifice of Christ. When Jesus sweat blood in the Garden of Gethsemane he was basically pleading with the Father if there were any other way that men might be saved then let’s go with that plan.
Since Jesus went to the cross, then there was no “Plan B.” All people everyone of every religious and ethnic persuasion must all come to God the same way…through Jesus Christ.
Joh 14:6 Jesus replied, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. **No one **comes to the Father except through me.
