For me, the most telling detail in all this is that your sister spent eight grades in specifically Catholic schools, and was able to leave knowing so little about the Christian faith–in fact, knowing less about the Catholic faith than many a Protestant does!

I was raised in the Church of God, sort of a “little sister” to the AoG. The people there had large gaps in their knowledge of the Catholic Church, and didn’t agree with what they did know, but they considered Catholics fellow Christians and mostly took a civil, brotherly, and charitable stance towards them. Occasionally, though, you’d encounter real animus towards the CC, and it was inevitably from an ex-Catholic (generally a northern transplant). And to the extent we had outright misinformation about what the CC believed, it came from them.

Sorry to digress from the main thrust of this thread, but sometimes I wonder how much present-day “Protestant anti-Catholicism” is simply Catholic laxity toward catechesis, come back to bite them?
I see the same thing in my home church. If anything is said about the Catholic Church it is by Mexicans who left the Catholic Church, or by Nigerians and Filipinos, from the Autonomous Muslim Region, who have lived in areas of actually faith based warfare and their families have fled from mobs and/or terrorist. Well if I said anything about another denomination it would be about the United Methodist Church that I was raised in or the Nation of Islam that my little brother became a Minister Muhammed for while I was an atheist.

Most Catholics I know break all the rules I have learned from here. They voted for Obama. They use birth control. Extra marital sex and abortions seem to be at the same rate as all other groups of the population. When they visit they take communion, the only question is how do you address the Pastor. They take the Communion at their church even though they married at a Vegas Wedding Chapel or are merly living with a partner. Don’t ask, don’t tell?

I don’t think the Church has a lock on bad catechesis. colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/180282/september-05-2008/better-know-a-district—lynn-westmoreland-update :doh2:

I’m a protestant convert to the Church. My mother attends AoG. I asked her to attend RCIA so that when we are speaking about the Catholic Church we would be talking about the same thing, not her misunderstanding of it. She went through RCIA at the same parish I did. She still knows nothing about the Catholic Church. 🤷

A signifcant percentage of AoG are fallen away Catholics. Many have left the Church over “pelvic issues” and are quite angry at the Church for not confirming them in their sin. I’d guess that fuels the anti-Catholic hatred among many AoG. I wasn’t anti-Catholic growing up. After my conversion I was surprised to see how ugly and hateful many Christians are towards the Church.

I, for one, can’t reject Jesus because of Judas Iscariot.

Guys, please…

I am reading a lot of mis-information about the Assemblies of God here.

You guys are judging the entire group by certain experiences.

The majority of Catholics I have met feel that their obligation to the Lord is met by attending mass each week, and because they have not missed mass in however many years they BETTER be going to heaven (Actually had one guy use BETTER in his delivery).

I have actually never personally known or met a devout Catholic, and I have known many Catholics. The majority of Catholics I have know believe that all paths lead to God!!! That the Buddhists, Muslims, Jainists, Hindu, etc are all going to be with God, it is all about what you are born into…

I DO NOT CARE IF THESE PEOPLE GO TO CONFESSION, GET BAPTIZED, TAKE THE EUCHARIST, These Catholics do not believe Jesus is the way, but just A way for SOME people, they forsake Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and it’s true meaning.

I am not making this up. I KNOW though, through my own research that these are not Catholic beliefs, I know this because I cared to know and research this. I actually cared to know devout Catholics, I cared to know the truth behind a Catholics devotion and not judge the whole by these cafeteria Catholics.

I love you guys, my Catholic Brothers and Sisters!

Let me tell you about AG though as I know second hand stories and bad experiences can really muddle understanding of how the majority really practice their religion (See your Catholic clown masses with super soakers for a bad example of how Catholics practice their religion)

CONTINUED ON NEXT POST:
I used to belong to an AG church years ago, before becoming Catholic, and I have to agree with alot of what Firstmode is saying.

One thing I noticed when I attended AG was there would be differences from church to church and minister to minister. Some more conservative than others, etc.

I am sure we can relate to that in our own parishes/diocese as well.

We as Catholics have had to deal with many misconceptions about our faith over the years, and it is no different for members of the AG.

I think we owe it to Firstmode to be charitible and listen to what he/she has to offer.

BAHAHAHAHAHA! Long live the Fightin’ Eighth.

Still, I don’t know whether Rep. Westmoreland’s church has a well-defined hierarchy and centuries of institutional discipline that could help ensure the transmission of such basic Christian and Biblical doctrine. What’s the CC’s excuse?

I’ve encountered the same thing, but mainly in my case among lapsed Catholics or Protestant converts from Catholicism. Still, anger’s one thing; ignorance is another, and it’s the ignorance that puzzles me. And your mother’s experience (or lack thereof) at RCIA could be telling us more about the RCIA than about her. That brings us right back to the territory of my earlier post.

Talking about the AofG I remember the Jim and Tammy show and the people he had on the show like Benny Hinn,Oral roberts,Leroy Jenkins,Don Stewart and many other , it was all about singing and begging for money and was on TV ever night. One time if I remember Hinn said he believe in 8 people in the Trinity, Roberts did bash the CC but I never heard Jim or Tammy say any thing bad about the Church.,they had a good show and I watch it ever night at 11,30 right after the news…did not care much for Tammy but Jim was OK…just my opinion.Smile

I went through the same RCIA and I know they presented the faith to her.

It seems like vincible ignorance.

Can you show me where they’re supposed to do that now?
I know you do not agree with the AoG. That is fine my Christian Brother.

Please know that the AoG itself does not hate Catholics or call them the whore of Babyon. Do some PEOPLE do this in every denomination? Yes.

BTW, I do not judge Catholicism as a whole on this example below. Are there many Protestants that know nothing about the Catholic Church? Yes, they have many misconceptions, as do all of you as to what the Assemblies of God represents. Many Protestants know NOTHING about Catholicism but spend 2 to 3 hours a day praying to the Lord and studying his Word and doing very long fasts (abstaining) for the Lord which have no equal in the Catholic church or Orthodox church. What I am trying to do in this message is to let you know that there are examples of bad AoG people, just like almost all the Catholics I have met are Unitarian Universalism in belief and have admitted to me that they earn their way to heaven based off mass attendance. I do not judge Catholics by their example. I look for the Pius and dedicated Catholics! Please look towards the Pius and Dedicated AoG Christians and use them as an example of what you think about AoG and the people that actually PRACTICE their faith.

Generalizing some massive movement of supposed hate that is brewing in AoG for the Catholic church is not growing us in Unity brother!

I am AoG and I love you, God bless you man! I hope your church is blessed and that unity and love will be found in your household through the common connection through the blood of Christ that you and your Mother share.

I hope the Catholic church grows bigger and bigger and that the AoG church grows bigger and bigger! AoG and the Catholic Church are bringing millions to Christ across the globe! Praise God!

This religion is Christian and very charismatic. They are correct on many doctrines but have a problem with the work of the Holy Spirit. You can go to thier web-site for most information. There can be conservative AOG or liberal ones that abuse the doctrine Holy Spirit.

The Catholic Church isn’t my Church, it is the one and only Church established by Christ. It is Christ’s one and only Church. If you genuinely desire the unity Christ prayed for you would be in communion with it.

My mother does not receive the body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist. 😦 You can’t have a truly personal relationship with Christ without the Eucharist.

John 6:53-56 said:
“Amen, amen I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood you do not have life within you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life and I will raise him up on the last day. For My flesh is true food and My blood is true drink. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me and I in him”

All the AOG people that I know are not anti anyone. For this reason. How cna we hate anyone or be against anyone for whom Christ loved enough to die for? We may not agree on certain doctrines but no one is our enemy. We have only one enemy to the christian faith and that is Satan.

We will just have to agree to disagree.
Have a great day Brother.

What is it about the situation that antagonizes you? Are they pushy about religion, is it the diferences in beliefs or are you uncomfortable with charismatic Christianity? If it’s the last, you might check with your parish or diocese to see if there’s a Catholic charismatic prayer group you could attend to learn more about it from a Catholic perspective.

My closest friend is Assembly of God and her husband is a minister. She answered an altar call and gave her life to Jesus at the age of 7. She’s an outstanding example of Christianity, very involved in works of mercy and charity even though her health problems make it very difficult. If she takes exception to something in Catholicism, it’s not what you might expect (Marianism, The Eucharist, the Pope); her difference of opinion is on levels of sin. To Protestants, sin is sin; one sin is not more damning than another since she believes a professed Christian is “once saved, always saved.”
That’s not the first I’ve heard of AoG folks believing OSAS, but it seems odd historically. OSAS seeps into every corner of American Protestantism, it seems.

I used to go to a pentacostal church where they did that. Also they had people come up and sit in a chair take their shoes off and the minister would kneel down in front of them and tickle their feet until they’d laugh. Also they’d stage mock boxing matches. and run around squirting each other with selzer bottles or water guns. Real holy stuff there!!

I wish I were kidding. This was not children’s church. This was adult church!
The name of the church was Family Christian Fellowship. It was in Rockford, Illinois from about 1976 to just a few years ago. The Pastor and his wife graduated from Kenneth Hagin’s Rhema Bible School in Broken Arrow, OK. They did a whole bunch of daffy stuff during their “services” When I objected they said I had a “demon of intelligence” and proceded to cast it out of me! If there really were such a thing I wish they would have cast it INTO me! Finally a bunch of people called a congregational meeting to object to this nonsense they were doing and they finally did clean up their act a bit.
