Yes, he also says those with money and power are called to be in a position to drive shifting balances of inequality. It can be a gift. Especially in te foundations and charities they can set up and drive and promote.

So for example ordinary old me might have no following , and says hey, let’s set up a wedding charity, help pay for a dress or venue for a young couple, I get little response.

If I am celebrity , my statement gets so much exposure.

I understand that but it usually causes more harm than good. You may raise $400. The celebrity may raise 2.5 million. But did you need more than $400 for a dress?

Ok, but would oblivion not be more merciful than eternal torture? I mean your God is, according to Christians, a “merciful” god so surely pretty much anything is more merciful than infinite punishment for finite crimes.

There’s in my experience a pretty high correlation between negative experiences with religious people, especially when justified for religious reasons, and negativity towards faith.
This is true. The people I know who are actively atheistic, as in expressing hate, contempt etc for the idea of God instead of just calmly saying there’s no rational basis for God to exist, all had bad past experiences with religion, not so much with God. Their only experience of God has been via people they don’t like, don’t get along with, don’t agree with, don’t want to be around. Or else they have had a situation like a loved one who died and they are angry.

This has been my experience as well. I only know one person who is actively anti-theist, and he got that way after his fiance left him to focus on her faith. Prior to that, he was deeply religious; it was a pretty crazy head-turn.

I honestly think torture sounds better than lack of existence. A lot of people would agree.

In one of Timothy’s letters it says one who does not provide for his own is worse than a non believer. This leads us to assume that most of the time a believer is better than a non-believer.

You’re arguing that your God should not be held to the same standard of evidence that anything else should be held to. Why?
As I said, faith does not lie in the same cognitive domain as skeptical thought. In other words, faith and doubt are not opposite views within the same domain of cognition. Doubt consists of mental acts, a.k.a. thoughts. Faith is not a thought, though toughts may arise from it. But faith itself is perfectly knowable in mental silence also. In any case, the “standards of evidence” that are usable in the cognitive domain of doubt, are meaningless in the domain of true faith.
As an aside this argument also explains why the Catholic church is so involved in early years education, foundational beliefs reinforced by authority figures are incredibly hard to shake. It’s an ingenious and insidious system, a good way to hold power, and to avoid accountability.
This is such an extremely cynical view of the RCC that I think there’s no point in trying to convince you otherwise. I do wonder what makes someone who takes this view of the RCC, sign up and participate on a Catholic website.

So for real, why are you on this site? Are you evangelizing Catholics or hoping one can evangelize you.

People choose not to love. Not loving others is it’s own punishment. Nothing else needs to be inflicted. Isolation. Anger. Unrequited longing. Envy. No thanks, I try to choose goodness.

I started out asking about RCIA and whether it would be appropriate to go as an atheist, after hanging around for a while I’ve realised just how much I disagree with RCC teachings.

It’s a good thing to know one’s self honestly. It’s the only way forward.

I see three possible options,
  1. He created it and enjoys sending the people (like me) that he knows will end up there
  2. He created it and is now powerless to destroy it
  3. He doesn’t exist and it’s a complete myth.
You have to look at it like this

WITH HELL: countless people do the right thing, dont’ steal, kill, etc = countless lives saved, countless sins prevented = net good

NO HELL : its a free for all, nobody has any incentive to be good. SUre, there are some who are “good for sake of being good” but those are in the “WITH HELL” scenario too, so you have MORE EVIL committed in this scenario.

Its a no brainer. God created hell because it REDUCES THE NET AMOUNT OF EVIL that is committed by mankind, RELATIVE to having no hell.

God respects our free will. We have chosen hell by our actions and he will respect that.

Logan don’t make the mistake of putting your own bias and prejudice into scripture reading. Or to orphan passages and take them out of context.
What are the verses each side of what you are referring to, and what is the letter about.

Believers are no better then non believers. We are all equal in God’s eyes. Jesus came to call sinners. We are all sinners.

Hindus use there god for there source of morals. Most atheists believe in science, which suggests evolution. Evolution happens based on survival of the fittest. A conscience cannot not be evolved under the laws of nature.
So false gods are ok to use as a guide to morality? I’m not sure you’ve thought this through.

You didn’t exist for many millions of years. Are you saying you would have preferred agony for millions of years instead?
