Wonderful point.
Do you argue atheists don’t evangelise out of love? Out of what they think is best for others to believe?Christians evangelize out of love, we want what is best for our neighbor. Even if God was not real, an atheist evangelizing a Christian would do nothing but take their peace of mind away.
So that allows him to drown everything in a temper? There are easier and simpler ways to eliminate sin than that but it seems odd that a loving God would create sin in the first instance, then create people that he knew would sin and would therefore end up in hell. What does the Bible tell us the world was like at the point of the flood? Unremittingly evil. The world had completely turned it’s back on God. In Christian theology, God is the source of all that is good, so in this context we can come to understand that the world had turned it’s back on all that was good. So, yeah, God wiped out everyone but Noah, who had remained faithful to Him (and, by extension of the previous context, had continued to do good int he world.)
As for Hell, that is a whole other topic that we could spend our entire lives discussing. Suffice it to say, God does everything He can, short of tampering with free will, to keep people from falling into Hell. He continuously calls out to the soul to lead it away from Hell, right up until that soul is dead. If they did not repent, then they choose to enter into eternal damnation, and suffer the full punishment due for their sins. The only way God could get rid of Hell is to get rid of free will, which would violate His creative act and defeat the entire purpose for our existence.
I don’t agree. Atheists care about things other than themselves, for a start. And why would they believe “they’re going down”, when they don’t believe in god?I do, they do it to make themselves feel better. If I’m going down best to have someone to go with me. It always feels better when you’re friend gets called into the principals office with you.
God doesn’t have a temper. You need to move beyond that sort of thinking. The bible uses anthropomorphic language to describe God because that’s the only way we can really understand Him, but it’s not accurate. So that allows him to drown everything in a temper?
Your assertion that “No one forced him to” is faulty. True, it’s not like we held a gun to His head and demanded He create Hell, but our actions and choices do necessitate the existence of a place for those who chose against God in this life. But you believe that God created Hell as a punishment, he didn’t have to, no one forced him to so why did he? I see three possible options,
- He created it and enjoys sending the people (like me) that he knows will end up there
- He created it and is now powerless to destroy it
- He doesn’t exist and it’s a complete myth.
Like if I made a beautiful pot and you broke it that would be wrong. To answer your question, yes, God has the right to flood the Earth and wipe out everyone. Period. End of question. As the author and source of all life, He owes us nothing.
It’s the difference between recognizing that you find someone attractive, and moving into the realm of thinking about what, sexually, you would like to do with her. That’s the same basic definition of thoughtcrime I work from, although I admit I am taking it a little further than you are.
How on earth do you will yourself to “actively will yourself to desire them sexually”, you either find some sexually desirable or you don’t. It’s not in my experience an act of will.
I’m going to assume that you believe that your God creates each soul, your God according to the Bible has both omnipotence and omniscience. Therefore he creates souls that he knows in advance will go to Hell, how is that not cruel to implement infinite punishment for finite crimes?Your assertion that “No one forced him to” is faulty. True, it’s not like we held a gun to His head and demanded He create Hell, but our actions and choices do necessitate the existence of a place for those who chose against God in this life.
If He were to force an otherwise-damned soul to be in His presence eternally, that would violate that soul’s will, which was set against God. Since God will not violate our free will, He allows those souls who do not want to spend eternity with Him to be separated from Him. However, this separation also separates us from His goodness and His mercy, and so we cannot experience Good, and we must experience His justice.
This isn’t right. The agnostics I know say “I don’t know that God is real. It would be great if he was, and I hope he is, but we have no way of knowing.”Agnostics are on the fence ‘ I don’t want him to be real’
