Jesus did stay in a abusive environment.

And either the sinner became transformed and held true to “go and sin no more” or Jesus and the Apostles kicked the dust off their sandals and went to the next town.
This strikes me as a misreading of scripture. You are conflating WELCOMING the apostle with TURNING FROM one’s sinful life. One can do one without yet doing the other.
Breaking bread with a sinner and celebrating a sinful marriage are two completely different things. This is not getting together for Wednesday night trivia at the Elk’s Lodge with people whose lifestyle you don’t agree with - sharing nachos and root beer. I have broken bread, been to homes of people i went to school with who were lesbian, who made gambling their career, were promiscuous and bragged about it. I am all for breaking bread with anyone if its someone i know and be a Christian presence to, even if i don’t share the gospel with them.

If it is not a simple “welcome back to town bbq” and is actually a recreation of a wedding reception, the whole event is “celebrating a sin”.

Maybe i was quoting two separate sentiments - but they are related. Maybe someday one of these men will wake up one day and be transformed by Christ and leave the sinful and invalid marriage but her presence at the wedding reception won’t make that happen.

One of my points was — because Jesus dined with sinners does not mean Christians are called to condone gay weddings to be charitable

My aunt who will be at the event just sent me a picture of a the decorations she set up: rainbow flags and a rainbow cake.
I missed this before – it sounds like its a “celebration of homosexuality” more than “introducing X (nameof other guy) to the family.” If your family is Catholic, I am really discouraged by that. i can see if these were your aunt’s good friends and she made dessert, but that is really over the top

I’m sure that they’re not celebrating what they do in bed. Are straight couples who have informal marriage receptions doing this to celebrate sex? The celebration is about a lot more than just sex.
No, the celebration is entirely about sex. I have lots of friends. I don’t have sex with my friends. I do have sex with my wife. And I’m expected to only have sex with my wife. So yep, a marriage is about celebrating sex and its natural results, children. Even the pagans knew this.
Certainly you do not think sodomy is the worst sin? Sins of the flesh are considered lesser sins than sins of the intellect. Having an unforgiving heart is very serious.
I don’t know but it is up near the top. Sins of the intellect are impossible to see. But when we see a sin we certainly shouldn’t celebrate it.

There isn’t a rule here. It is a matter of conscience.
For me, I would NOT attend this event. I would also not dictate to others what they should do and would not judge their decision.

You sound pretty silly. This is one of the most popular books among traditional Catholics and contains imprimatur. Don’t even bother trying to discredit it.

And yes, the book speaks about sodomy - it refers to it as the “sin of Sodom”.

Well, I guess that my mind is not always on sex like some people. 😉

When I go to a reception, I’m not imagining the new couple having sex and nothing to do with sex ever even crosses my mind.

That could be because sex these days isn’t reserved for marriage. Consequently, many people don’t realize that sex and marriage are connected. But upon reflection this is obvious. And a study of history will confirm this. They used to have bedding ceremonies.

I wouldn’t suggest imagining the couple having sex. But sex is definitely an essential part of marriage.

You must have been imagining it a little bit when you talked about the reception for the OP’s friend being “a celebration of two men sodomizing each other”. It seems kind of explicit to me and not really necessary in this discussion.

No it is not. It is a terrible offense against God but since it is our fallen flesh it is not near the top.

Sins of the intellect are impossible to see.
What difference does that make. God sees all. We are told not to judge. We can make value judgments. Sodomy is objectively wrong but subjectively we don’t have a clue.

But when we see a sin we certainly shouldn’t celebrate it.
I hope you were not spying like the guys who caught the women in the act of adultery. Otherwise you didn’t see anything but what was in your mind.

Yep. And disingenuous to pretend this celebration is anything but another, subsequent “wedding” reception. Said “wedding” being a grotesque parody of God’s plan for marriage.

When did I say the OP should attend the reception? I didn’t. Your words were inaccurate, however, to what Jesus was doing. That’s why I objected.

It’s a party. The wedding already happened. The marriage wasn’t asked to be in a church. People are free to do what is right or wrong. It isn’t sinful for homosexual people to eat in public or dance. I’d go out of respect to my dad and any connection with this man while growing up.

Christ sought out sinners. Reprimanded those who complained of the tax collectors and other such undesirables formerly shunned.

Yeah but he didn’t go to parties celebrating sin.

Poor John the Baptist. He got his head cut off for pointing out a marriage between a particular man and woman was wrong. He could have saved his life and partied it up with Herod! Why didn’t Jesus tell him this? Why didn’t Jesus correct his misplaced enthusiasm for morality?
Honor thy father and they mother is also required of Catholics.
We don’t have to go along with immoral celebrations. Here honoring our parents is bearing witness to the truth.
