You have yet to explain how and when and indeed if, the Petrine Claims descended on to the shoulders of the Bishop of Rome! Nowhere is it made clear!
The information is here, or at the least there are many good starting points here.

This is one of the biggest problems with the non-Catholic Christian, Protestant belief in Sola Scripture or Bible Alone, and the rejection of Catholic history (early Christian history), by many non-Catholic Christians today, They are actually rejecting various aspects of Christianity.

One cannot fully know or understand Christianity and why Christians, Catholics, believe what they do today, if one ignores the Christian past.

If one ignores Christian history from yesterday, they will not understand Christianity today.

For example, the Catholic Church has documents written by and about Catholic Popes, spanning Catholic/Christian history, which clearly demonstrate the Apostolic Succession. However, since Protestants refuse to consider early Catholic sources, which are actually, early Christian sources, they can’t connect the dots.

One cannot connect the Christian dots, without first connecting the Catholic dots.

This would be like reading the manual that comes with a new computer and trying to understand how the computer came to be.

If one ignores the history of technology, leading up to the modern computer they will never understand why a computer is the way it is today.

“Christian tradition” is just another way of saying Christian history.

Then again, if all Protestant, non-Catholic Christians, knew and understood Christian History, they would also know and understand Catholicism and that might create a problem for Protestant denominations…

The Famous Protestant convert to Catholicism, Cardinal Henry Newman (1801-1890), once said,

*“ To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant." *

Catholicism represents the Full Deposit of Faith.

**1Tim. 3: 15 **if I am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the [SINGULAR] household of God, which is the church [SINGULAR] of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth [SINGULAR]

Luke 10:16 “He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”

Acts 4: … “ Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, answered them, “Leaders of the people and elders: If we are being examined today about a good deed done to a cripple, namely, by what means he was saved, then all of you and all the people of Israel should know that it was in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead; in his name this man stands before you healed. He is the stone rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. There is no salvation through anyone else, nor is there any other name under heaven given to the human race by which we are to be saved.”

**Eph. 2:19 So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, [singular] built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets,**COLOR=“blue”] Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; singular] in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit."

Eph.5: 27 that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

**Mark 6: 7 **“And he called to him the twelve, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits”

**Deut.32: 4 **"The Rock, his work is perfect; for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and right is he.”

Isaiah 22: Re: PETER(and Jesus)“ And I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David; he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open. 23 And I will fasten him like a peg in a sure place, and he will become a throne of honor to his father’s house. And they will hang on him the whole weight of his father’s house, the offspring and issue, every small vessel, from the cups to all the flagons

Luke.22 Verses 29 to 30:"and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, 30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel."

**Eph. 4: 4 **“There is one body [One Church] and one Spirit, [One set of beliefs] just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call, 5 one Lord, [One God] one faith, [One set of doctrine and dogma] one baptism, By water in the Trinity] 6 one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all. 7 But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8 Therefore it is said, “When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.”

Oh yea: I [Jesus] give you Peter the Key’s [all of them] to my Kingdom of heaven". Amen! That seems clear 🤷 [Mt. 16:19]

Its clear that whatever one thinks led to the primacy of Rome (egPaul and Peter deaths, Christian mission work to gentiles, Rome being capital of gentile world etc) ,the differences among denominational lines as to the interpretation of Matt cant deny the end result doesnt contradict the NT writings.

Authority of the Catholic Church

Matthew 16:17,18
Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
Matthew 18:17,18
If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector. Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Matthew 28:18-20
Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”
John 20:21-24
(Jesus) said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained…”
1 Corinthians 11:23-28
For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread, and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes. Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will have to answer for the body and blood of the Lord. A person should examine himself, and so eat the bread and drink the cup.
Luke 10:16

OP and everyone else forgive me, but i did not read the whole rest of the thread.

i have talked with protestants about this, and they hand me some explnation about a translation error. jesus spoke aramaic not greek therefore:

aramaic was a language that used kepha to mean rock. and a small rock was a diffrent word. jesus said in matthew blessed are you simon son of jonah…you are kepha (translated as peter) and upon this kepha (translated as rock) i will build my church.

It doesn’t get any clearer than this.

You ask for Protestant responses Jimmy B but as a Catholic I find the attempts to prove an unbroken line of Popes from Peter onwards a little difficult to swallow. There are gaps, there was the Avignon diversion and I believe our Orthodox friends have their own take on things in which we Catholics broke away leaving the Orthodox as the true inheritors of Peter’s mantle.

But even if the proof were incontovertible, what difference does it make? We could have handed the title down in unbroken sequence and yet have gone seriously wrong in belief along the way. I believe that is the view of many Protestants. It is present day teaching and observance that are important not one-upmanship over who is the true successor of Peter.
Then you don’t believe the Church is protected from error regarding dogma by the Holy Spirit? I think that is what Pentecost Sunday is about.

Josie, that’s hogwash, and we both know it. The Church of Rome indeed added to the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed.

Canon 7 of the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus in AD 431:

I’m not sure if it gets any clearer. Yet it does. 😉 During the Patriarchate of Pope Leo III in the early 800s, he had the Nicene Creed carved into two silver shields–sans filioque, mind you–and placed above it an inscription in Latin “HIC LEO POSVI AMORE ET CAVTELA ORTHODOXAE FIDEI.” Now Rome has the filioque in its creed. If that’s not an addition, I really don’t know what is.

In Christ,
Andrew
I am totally confused about the filioque. I thought it was a clarification by the Church of Rome as to the relationship of the persons of the Trinity to one another. If it was only a clarification, how can it be an addition?

In essence, it is… this is the right answer. Is there, actually, any Christian here who disagrees with the language in the Filioque? Anyone, who disagrees with the words of the Filioque are rejecting the true meaning of the Holy Trinity, in that, God is One, three Parts, ALL EQUALE…

This is a basic Christian belief.

Who out there, disagrees with the language in the Filioque? And, I’m not talking about changing the Creed; I want to know if you actually disagree with the words, which were added???
Filioque, Latin for "and (from) the Son”.
4th century
Defines the three persons of the Trinity: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. In its original Greek form, the creed says that the Holy Spirit proceeds “from the Father”. The Latin text speaks of the Holy Spirit as proceeding “from the Father and the Son”. *Et in Spiritum Sanctum, Dominum, et vivificantem: qui ex Patre Filioque procedit. *(And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.)
Who here, rejects the Christian belief that God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, are All One God, Three Separate Parts, All Equal and Inseparable?
Who disagrees with the actual language found in the Filioque? Not, the addition to the Creed but the actual words, found in the Filioque?

58.Eastern Orthodox apologists make much of the fact that Pope St. Leo III opposed the edition of Filioque to the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed of 381 and had it engraved in its original form in Greek and Latin on two silver shields in front of St. Peter’s/,{1} but that is where the usefulness of their polemical weapon ceases. The Father, complete God in Himself, the Son, complete God begotten of the Father, the Holy Spirit, complete God proceeding from the Father and the Son…” {6} This manifestly concerns the hypostatic procession of the Holy Spirit.

{6} Swete, H. B. On the History of the Doctrine of the Procession of the Holy Spirit from the Apostolic Age to the Death of Charlemagne. Cambridge and London, 1876. p. 230. The Latin reads, “Spiritum Sanctum a Patre et a Filio aequaliter procedentem, consubstantialem, coaeternum Patri et Filio. Pater plenus Deus in se, Filius plenus Deus a Patre genitus, Spiritus Sanctus plenus Deus a Patre et Filio procedens.”

No where in the quotes shown does it give any support to the position of the papacy regarding its claims to Jurisdiction or Infallibility. Indeed these quotes relate to the Bishop of Rome as simply another Catholic Bishop simply going about the Lord’s work..

Let me ask the readers of this thread a question…

Under who’s authority did John the Baptist baptize and preach to prepare the way for Christ? Was authority given to John from man or was it given from God?

Was Christ authority given to him from man, or was it given to him from God?

There were priests, scribes and a sanhedrin who were fully described as being The Religious Authority of that age, possessing complete knowledge of the scripture and traditions of that age…and yet John - who was a voice in the wilderness - had more authority than they had…and then Christ - who was not a scribe or part of the religious authority - had more authority than all of them.

Who gives authority and who is free to take back that authority (whenever he desire) to give it to another group?

If we are students of biblical history, we’d see that each time man pressumed ownership of authority (or birthright to this authority) God actively gave the birthright to someone else to show that it is not by our will, but by God’s that authority is dispensed.

For hundreds of years, the Kingdom of Israel ruled the land…until they lost their humility and disobeyed the Eternal laws of God…and then God gave ruling authority to another.

From Christ, the Universal Church (not yet called “Catholic”) was given authority to spread the kingdom, but as always this authority was contingent on the obedience to the Eternal laws of God.

So, to determine whether or not the Catholic Church (specifically the Papacy) still currently has authority, we need only to look at whether the Eternal laws of God are still being obeyed…

“God is One…there are no others” [X = Trinitarianism 325AD; Council of Nicaea]
“No idol crafting or worship” [X = removed from the recorded list of commandments]
“Remember the Sabbath” [X = solimnity was transferred from Saturday to Sunday]
“Remember the Sabbath” [X = Feast days (considered High Sabbaths) were replaced by new holidays]

Exodus 31:16 - “Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.”

Deuteronomy 4:2 - “You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.”

Deuteronomy 12:32 - “Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it. You shall not add to it nor take away from it.”

Proverbs 30:5-6 - “Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. Do not add to His words, lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.”

Matthew 5:17-19 - “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For verily I say unto you, until heaven and earth pass [which clearly has NOT happened yet], one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, until all be fulfilled. Whatsoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of God: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the Kingdom of God.”

**Revelation 14:12 **- Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of [Christ].

Mark 7:7-8: “In vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men”.

Many proponents argue that “authority was given to the Papacy by Christ himself, so they have the authority to alter any laws as they are guided by the Holy Spirit”. But based on the only litmus test that has ever mattered (“obedience to the ETERNAL laws of God”) and based on instruction that the laws should NOT ever be altered, I would argue that authority is no longer theirs, and has not been theirs for a while now.

So the next question is, “who currently has the Authority if not the Papacy of the Catholic Church?”

Authority of the Catholic Church

Joshua27,

Perhaps there’s a logical connundrum in your response.

You’ve quoted Scripture. It was under Pope Damasus that the Scripture you quoted was promulgated to the world at the Council of Rome at the end of the fourth century. So, by logic, you too accept the pope’s authority. Whenever anyone refers to Scripture, then they believe in the authority of the pope and the Catholic Church.

Scripture also tell us that Jesus gave the Keys to Peter, with the power to bind and loose. The Keys is a figure that represents authority and line of succession.

I have always said that the Bible was a Catholic Book. It was written by Catholics and for Catholics and collect, organized, translated, numbered, put in order and protected by the Catholic Church. Some verses were accepted and some rejected and removed and all of it taking place under the authority of the Roman Catholic Church. The Catholic Church, approved and authorized the Bible. This was done during a Roman Catholic Ecumenical Council, were Catholic Popes had the final authority.
The Bible, is defiantly a Catholic Book!

Thank you for your post.
