Baptist feeling called to Catholic Church

Welcome Ben! I, too, am a former Baptist. Born and raised for the first 55 years of my life. Then I decided to go to college, a Baptist college, earned my associate through Masters in Business. My first religion class, the prof mentioned the early church fathers and St. Augustine. He said Augustine has had the most influence on today’s christian church second only to Christ. I had never heard of early church fathers. I started researching and reading, and felt a strong draw to the Catholic Church. I couldn’t find anything to disprove it - even the scripture I had read and memorized supported Catholicism. Suddenly, I saw the true understanding which supported all of the sacraments. After 2-3 years, I finally had the courage to walk into a Catholic Mass. I knew I was home during the procession. I will pray for you and I encourage you to keep searching. Listen to Catholic radio, watch EWTN, read-read-read! Scott Hahn’s Rome Sweet Home is probably what clinched it for me. Like Mrsdizzy and Agatha, PM me if I can be of any help.

Hey, Ben!!! Welcome to the forums. Feel free to ask any questions you have about the faith. Of course, always take the answers with a grain of salt since this is an internet forum but it can be a great resource nevertheless.

Just some notes (you said you wanted personaly advice so…)

-It won’t be easy. My Grandpa was disowned for becoming Catholic. People will look at you weird even though the Church has been around for 2,000 years. But…
-It’s the greatest thing ever.

We have:

-Christ’s real (and I mean it, REAL) presence in the Eucharist
-St. Thomas Aquinas
-Christ in the Eucharist
-Tons of Catholic rites (basically different Churches that are in communion with Rome and the Pope who each celebrate Christ’s passion differently. Confused? Don’t worry, so am I. And I’m a cradle Catholic)
-Did I mention Christ in the Eucharist?
-Funny hats

-Christ in the Eucharist
-And we smoke during Mass

Good luck, mate!!! I will pray for you that God will shed light on your path.

Hey! It’s better than having funny walks!

OH, and if you ever have questions ABOUT the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, check out the talk given in this YouTube link:

It’s called “Jesus & the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist” by the author of the book by the same name.

Hello Ben,

I am a convert to the Catholic faith from an independent baptist church. I was draw due to the connection to history and the revert style of worship.

Your path the the true church may not be easy but I want to encourage you and let you know you can shoot me a message any time if you need help or have questions. If I live near you I’d be more than happy to meet and help sponsor you in RCIA.

God bless,
Nick

I really like Fr. Spitzer’s Universe. It’s on at 2:00 Wednesday and is repeated, I think, at 10. It was replaced today (June 13) by live coverage of something and I was disappointed.

Depending on where you[re located Fr Spitzer’s Universe will air again at 12am (Eastern) Saturday. It’ll be 11pm Friday our time.

Ben, best thread I have read in quite a while! Follow your heart! Nothing happens by mistake!
Praying for you!

This is a little off topic but is that Aragon in your profile picture.
I heard Lord of The rings has a lot of Catholic anology

Praying for you It was hard bringing myself to the truth but it works out. God’s will be done

Sounds to me you are sincerely interested in following the Gospel Jesus commissioned his Apostle to preach in Mk 16:15-16. This preached Gospel leads to either salvation or condemnation based on each hearer’s response. Notice Jesus does not say salvation is determined by knowledge of the bible or by hearing it preached, but by hearing the spoken word of God by those authorized to speak it, the Apostles. Their authorized successors, the Catholic bishops, in union with the Pope continue to speak this oral word of God which is the teachings of the Catholic faith. No other way to learn it in its fullness without error. Its current expression is found the Catechism of the Catholic Church. In the RCIA program the Catechism should be studied in detail as it contains the teachings of Jesus handed down through today.

How wonderful. Read the Gospel of John chapter 6. Take is literally. My prayers are with you. Post once in a while where your journey takes you. I read something today “don’t just think about it, do something. Don’t be afraid of making a mistake.” Let the Holy Spirit be in charge.

Ben: I am a recent convert to Catholicism from the Protestant churches [for I also spent time in more than one denomination]; primarily, my background was Southern Baptist.

In fact, my wife and I have just started going to mass and are about to start the RICA process [for adult conversions].

I created a site [still somewhat in process] for explaining to other Protestants why I converted: it’s my way of leaving bread crumbs [Hansel and Gretel] for others like me to follow to find their way home to Rome.

Believe me, I did not think this was going to happen. First, the Holy Spirit began to draw me. Next, I realized intellectually that Catholicism is the truth. We didn’t convert because of a feeling, but because Catholicism is true.

I have documented my journey on a wordpress site [I’ll DM you the link] and provided the precise reasons for my conversion under a series entitled Stones on the Pathway to Rome.

It also has links under the menu heading ‘Provisions for the Journey’ to other writings about Protestant conversion stories that are far more influential than my own. You may enjoy those …

Peace and grace, brother.

If you have access, watch the Journey Home program Monday night simulcast on EWTN tv and radio, where people give their story about entering the Catholic Church. The people you meet on these programs might only have a shallow connection to their present church but many have a deep connection to, say, a Baptist church. These people take their time, study the issues, and of course these have made the ‘journey’ into the CC. The host Marcus Grodi is a convert from Lutheranism.

There is a program on EWTN radio called Called to be Catholic with Dr David Anders, who has a live call-in program at 2 pm eastern time, replayed at 11 pm eastern time. It is specifically for people who are considering entering the CC, but may have one or more objections or obstacles to doing so. Dr Anders has a strong Calvinist background but studied the issues and migrated to the Catholic Church. He is extremely knowledgeable and helpful to a lot of people. His doctoral program was in church history, but he fields quite a few questions about the Bible.

There are live broadcasts streaming at youtube.com/ewtn if I have that correct. You can also find videos of Dr Anders on youtube.com here’s a recent program

Many good posts and much good advice you’ve been given. (rereading that I sound like Yoda). Anyway, I would caution you to spend time reading, investigating, and most of all, listening. Expose yourself to the many resources that have been recommended. A call from God, doesn’t deserve an instant answer. Make sure you are totally committed to the direction you choose. The RCC will be there if that is your choice.
Prayers said for your discernment.

Thanks for the article. I’ve talked with my parish Priest last week. He gave me some great wisdom that I’m to follow for now. May Gods will be done! 🙂
