A Meditation on Glenn Beck’s Divine Mission

I spoke with a parishioner just today after Mass; was buying scrip & mentioned one of the participating stores supports Planned Parenthood (I read it on a pro-life site). She said “That’s good – isn’t it?” I said “Planned Parenthood helps women get abortions! They also promote condoms for 12 yr olds.” (Of course, I could’ve gone on and on…) I just was a bit taken aback that she didn’t know PP was in the abortion business. And she has kids in parochial school. You’re right! The Church and it’s members are somewhat responsible for the half-empty churches, and the flood of Catholics voting for pro-abortion and pro euthanasia candidates. And of course, the ongoing flood of priest abuse cases going through the courts doesn’t help anything either. But then when one person organizes a event like this to bring the country back to God, people have problems with it. I guess I’m just too old to understand anymore. God bless Glenn Beck!!!
He mentions that he is a recovering alcoholic almost daily on his program and mentions the 12 steps often. He especially mentions these two steps:
- He is a recovering alcoholic. AA was co-founded by a Catholic Priest, so I imagine it’s okay for Catholics to attend. AA can deeply rededicate addicts to a life of spirituality. I know this from first-hand experience. It many ways, twelve steps are microcosms of the plurality of America, under the idea of a God you individually define. But AA can vilify traditional religions as part of the problem, “the religion they were raised with”, usually Catholicism, somehow inferior to a nebulously defined higher power. Alcoholism and his recovery through the Twelve Steps explains some of his approach to living spiritually.
I earnestly believe that he admires Pope Benedict. He has stated on his show that he admires Catholic leaders, Protestant leaders, Jewish leaders, and Mormon leaders.
- He is a lapsed Catholic who has quoted Pope Benedict to repudiate liberation theology. His choice to use the Pope’s words feels tactical to me. Is he catering to “Big Tent” policy in the Republican party? Or does he admire Pope Benedict? What do I make of his transformation into a Mormon? Can I trust him on spiritual values? Or is he surreptitiously driving our wagon train to Kolob?
I must say that this is the one thing I love about Mormonism. As far as Beck’s Mormonism, he said it was those ppl who accepted him, and that he was so impressed by how they lived what they believed.
Yes, when I heard that the BYU football team has the highest average GPA and half their players are married and half of those have children…I was very suprised.I must say that this is the one thing I love about Mormonism.
We need a Catholic revival in many ways!
Not suprisingly, one of the first responses was something along the lines of “Wow, sure is a white crowd.”Not sure if I’m the first on this post, but I was actually there.
It was great. I’ve read most of the news articles that claim to accurately describe what went on and most of them miss the main point - that we need to turn to God to restore our great country. Freedom and liberty hinges on our reliance upon God, not man.
That really was it. Nothing he said in the right context was anything more than that. Someone said earlier that he said “pray with your door open” and jesus said close the door. That’s not the full quote. Glenn did say pray with the door open, but right after that he said “so your children can see you”. He also emphasized the importance of family as well as praying together as a family.
Anyways, I think the best thing we can do is to pray for Glenn and that he comes home to the true church. Meanwhile, God is certainly allowed to use him for his will.
Oh yeah, there were absolutely atleast 500,000 there. The crowd stretched from the Lincoln Memorial to the Washington Monument, plus the sides were packed as well as a field South of the reflecting pool. The crowd felt more like a church picnic than anything else. VERY courteous and BARELY any trash was left behind. I met people of all faiths and skin color there. Granted, most were white, true, but the goal of the rally was truly about uniting as the human race.
I’m sorry to hear that. I love my parish so I can’t relate to the alternative. I’m so glad that you are steadfast in your faith regardless of the situation at your local parish! You’re right! You will find your way!I love the Catholic faith and what it stands for, I just didn’t feel too welcome at the local Catholic Church here. My wifes mothers Church in Florida was very friendly to me. But it will not take away from what I believe and the opinions that I’ve formed myself of the Church. I’ll find my way.
That’s true. It’s also true that the comment in question was based on a picture taken from the air, and that all you could see in that picture was a huge group of people and it was impossible to discern the race of anyone from that distance. Not suprisingly, one of the first responses was something along the lines of “Wow, sure is a white crowd.”
The Left and their allies the mainstream media had already decided on the narrative of this rally before never took place. A bunch of angry white yahoo’s joined together for a hate-fest. That is why you saw comments about the whiteness of the crowd before anybody even saw the makeup of the crowd. That is why you saw Al Sharpton’s counter rally focusing on Glenn Beck trying to hijack civil rights from them when he in reality never brought it up. They sent their minions throughout the crowd looking looking for racist signs and epitaphs. Instead they found polite people and talk about God- to the left talking about God in public is almost as bad as racial slurs. That’s true. It’s also true that the comment in question was based on a picture taken from the air, and that all you could see in that picture was a huge group of people and it was impossible to discern the race of anyone from that distance.
So, was there white in the picture? Sure, maybe the colors of some people’s shirts were white, and perhaps the colors of some of the buildings were white. That’s about all that could be accurately determined as “white”. Were a lot of the people that attended white? Sure, but that wasn’t evident from the picture about which the comment was made. And, just as a matter of statistics, the majority of the people in this country are white, so if a whole bunch of white people show up at something, that shouldn’t be surprising.
Hence, that comment was made not based on observable facts but on some attempt to divide and denigrate, which is unfortunate.
Wait, you didn’t know that was a white supremacy gathering? So I guess because I’m white and a lot of other people who attended were white, it makes the message of uniting around God and honor regardless of race a bad message…
Not at all. It was just the usual suspects who have bought into Sharpton’s drivel. He has to do something to keep in the spotlight. The majority of the people at Al Sharpton’s rally were black. So, does that mean they’re racist because they didn’t have racially diverse attendance?
I just think it is unfortunate that if a significant percentage of Beck’s audience was white, that the assertion was that they were “racist”, but if we apply the same standard to Sharpton’s group, it’s considered preposterous. Not at all. It was just the usual suspects who have bought into Sharpton’s drivel. He has to do something to keep in the spotlight.
I loved that part. Pray on your knees and let your children see you humbled before God.That really was it.
Should be, but they dont. The Catholic Church has members of every race and nationality under the sun. Its teaching on social justice is the only way to guarantee a restoration of authentic Christian values.
Why waste time on an intra-Protestant squabble over race? People like Beck and Sharpton should be looking to us, not the other way around.
