I’m not at all surprised this is happening. It is a logical consequence of the widespread acceptance of abortion. I wonder what will come next.
Post-birth abortion, sometimes called infanticide, seems the next logical step. After all, several philosophers have declared that doing so is ethically permissible for parents.
Maybe it is, and maybe that’s the problem.
Your statement is intriguing, but a bit puzzling at the same time. Do you mean that a culture which has rejected a religion in all but the label will be actively resistant to following that religion? I am thinking we see something similar in the US. Although some people are openly hostile to Christianity, most Americans declare themselves to be Christian. But their Christianity is shallow and tolerated only to the extent that it doesn’t restrict their lives.

Yeah, u hit the nail on the head there for the most part in that last sentence. Sadly, it seems that a lot of people are cafeteria-style Catholics, in that they pick and choose what they want to believe, and discard anything that they don’t want to believe or doesn’t suit their particular lifestyle.

It’s really a troublesome time that we live in.

Note the contradiction:
The Belgian Senate voted last week to approve the legislation, which would allow euthanasia for dementia patients and children “capable of discernment” and “affected by incurable illness or suffering.”

Neither children nor dementia patients are capable of discernment in this situation. Even more horrifying are the claims that euthanasia is ALREADY being practiced but now that it’s legal the children can “die with dignity…”

Have you heard that now in Belgium if you are a terminally ill child your life can be ended. All you have to do is ask. Oh my God.

For comparison, I’ve looked up a program left over from the Nazi’s that “helped” folks deal with the terminally ill. It is called Action T4. In part the article that describes this horror of WW2 says this: “During the official stage of Action T4, 70,273 people were killed at various extermination centres located at psychiatric hospitals.[7] Evidence was revealed at the Nuremberg Trials that German and Austrian physicians continued the euthanization of patients after October 1941, and that a total of about 275,000 people were murdered under T4.[8] Based on files recovered after 1990, 21st century research provides evidence that at least 200,000 physically or mentally handicapped people were killed in gas chambers, by medication, or deliberate starvation between 1939 and 1945.”

The rest can be found here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Action_T4

Dear God in Heaven, what will they unleash next? How do folks get so deceived in their minds that they actually compare murder to mercy and think they are the same thing?

Very disheartening. I have read several articles on this since it happened. It makes my heart hurt. And yet when you say you disagree with it you are callous and hard 😦

I wonder when the culture of death will turn the corner back to life? I pray everyday for the people on this planet.

China123,

The pendulum has swung so far to the side of cruelty and death that surely, it has reached the limit of it’s reach and can only come back again! I pray so.

Do not despair. Here is why they did it:

nytimes.com/2014/02/14/world/europe/belgium-close-to-enacting-sick-child-euthanasia-law.html?hpw&rref=world&_r=0

And you’ll notice there are people who are opposed to this. This is not over by any means.

The Nazi comparison does not apply. The consent of a parent is required. One would think children would be unable to give their full consent since they are unaware of many other ways to alleviate pain, and even if they were, no child has the legal authority to consent on a legal matter. I am certain the Church will issue a statement regarding this.

Peace,
Ed

Bull on so-called ‘requiring parental consent.’ Like the doctors are going to ask the parents if it’s okay to kill their child, they’ll just do it. Something like 25% of reported ‘mercy’ killings in Holland are done without consent (and likely the same in Belgium), what makes anyone think the need for parental consent will stop the murderers from killing all the kids with severe illness. And what’s next, the disabled? The injured? The depressed? The lonely, the poor, the retired?

And, as the linked article says, the children must show a ‘capacity of discernment.’ What child can show a capacity of discernment about ANYTHING?! And who decides the ‘capacity’? The ‘doctor’? It’s like asking an abortionist if someone should get an abortion. Also, who has any ability to discern much of anything when they are in a condition of “constant and unbearable suffering”, let alone children?!

We’ve got one foot in hell, the other on a banana peel, and I think Belgium, at least, just slipped.

I can understand that people are opposed to this, but the comparison to T4 is completely unfounded,
As far as I know, those 200,000 did not consent to being killed in gas chambers.
The title of this thread makes as much sense as “Catholic church wants people to suffer before they die”. This is not a matter to be settled by cheap appeals to emotion.

Belgium did not “just slip”. One of the reasons this law was passed is precisely to prevent mercy killings without consent.
Consent is a requirement for euthanasia, both for adults as well as children.

The focus on pain, in a near death patient, is an interesting limitation of the law. I believe it unlikely that the pain cannot be controlled via medicines. It is not unheard of for increasing doses of morphine to be given to the point of risking death. That is not immoral. One wonders why the law was not formulated to give protection to doctors administering high doses of drugs for pain relief, with the patients acknowledgement of the risk?

The more questionable cases arise in individuals suffering intolerable (their assessment) quality of life. Here there are no medical options, so the “freedom” of the sufferer to die by choice is asserted. This new law in Belgium seems to be framed in keeping with that principle…

I don’t think any of the lives lost in the T4 program were lost for “cheap emotional appeals” and if you knew about the program, just one of many, many programs BTW, it was done in hospitals primarily because it saved cost of shipping to camps. The actual authorization from Hitler was BACK DATED to when the docs had begun using euthanasia against the infirm in their hospitals. And as best as numbers can be counted the actual numbers are most likely under counted. Read the article.

One child killed because he or she is terminally ill and suffering is one too many.

Happy horse manure. The same argument is used by pro-abortionists, saying that legalized abortion prevents ‘back alley’ abortions, making them ‘safe.’ The law allegedly prevents ‘something worse.’ But, before euthanasia and abortion were legalized, all killing of the old and unborn was illegal. The doctors doing the killing were simply breaking the law, and morality. Now, they’re only breaking moral laws, which they disregard anyway. This law just makes it easier for murderers to murder more.

That’s what I mean by a cheap emotional appeal, because I could just as esily say that one child having to endure an immense amount of suffering just because of Catholic doctrine is on too many.
But these things poison the well and make every rational debate about this matter completely impossible.

More appeal to emotions here.
I have yet to see one decent argument against the Belgian law, which is supported by the vast majority of Belgian people, including a big amount of Catholics. And not only cafeteria Catholics.
