I personally like the Dom DeLatt commentary on the Holy Rule. It was out of print for many years, but is now back in print, although I don’t know where you can get it. Just my preference and what was used in my novitiate training.

Thanks for the recommendation, Sister!

It can be found on Amazon Sister. amazon.com/Commentary-Rule-Benedict-Paul-Delatte/dp/1579104606/ref=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1343678071&sr=1-6&keywords=delatte+rule+of+st+benedict It has a great reputation, I am looking forward to reading it when I am done with the one I am currently going through.

In addition, the one by Simon used the Delatte commentary as its primary source, but also used others as well. amazon.com/Commentary-Benedictine-Oblates-Rule-Benedict/dp/1606082663/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1343677992&sr=8-1&keywords=simon+rule+of+st+benedict This is the one I am reading now. It is very well written and researched.

Peace Sister,

Peace Sister,
Thanks for letting me know! I would love to have a new copy as mine is old and a bit worn out. I’ve read it several times through and through but each time I read it I gain new understanding and wisdom. UIOGD!!

Thanks for letting me know!
No problem Sister. I am working on the Simon commentary now which seems to be excellent so far. It is divided up into daily readings on the Rule which is nice. If I can have a few good and faithful commentaries, I can cycle them every 4 months. Is the Delatte commentary organized the same way?

Peace,

Have any of you read Thomas Merton’s books? I posted a review of “The Rule of Saint Benedict: Initiation Into the Monastic Tradition 4 (Monastic Wisdom)” after Luigi inquired about it. I browsed through “No Man Is An Island” and “Seed” in Barnes & Noble the other day. Very impressive. I ended up buying “The Seven Storey Mountain”, which is apparently a classic - it was featured in National Review’s list of the 100 best non-fiction books of the century.

I have read a great deal of his work, Dave. The Seven Story Mountain is, indeed, an absolute classic. You will love it. Not bad for a Trappist 😃

Awesome! I have three chapters left in an Opus Dei book I’m currently reading. I think I’ll read “The Seven Storey Mountain” next. Its a little off-topic, so to speak, but it really looked good when I was perusing it at Barnes & Noble. So good I couldn’t resist buying it.

Careful. You might end up a Benedictine 😃

All the cool kids are doing it… 😉
Call me an Opus Dei nerd.

I can’t remember if I asked you guys about this. Have you heard of First Things Magazine? An Opus Dei supernumerary invited me to a meeting of the ROFTERS at the Study Center. Apparently, ROFTERS stands for Readers of First Things (ROFTers). The description from the website: “First Things is published by The Institute on Religion and Public Life, an interreligious, nonpartisan research and education institute whose purpose is to advance a religiously informed public philosophy for the ordering of society.” Past and present contributors include the late Fr. Richard John Neuhaus, Mary Ann Glendon, George Weigel, and Michael Novak, among others. Sounds like an impressive group of writers.

😃

The late Father Neuhaus was the founder. I have read it now and again. It is very good.

I enjoy reading posts where you guys go “technical monk”, such as when you’re discussing various interpretations of St. Benedict’s Rule or the mechanics of Lectio Divina. And to think Friar Tuck thought he was cool among the trees of Sherwood Forest!

I’ve enjoyed Merton too. Some of his early work is very good. He had amazing talents as a writer. Be careful of the work late in his life, he got into bit of trouble later.

First Things is a pretty decent magazine, yes. I don’t have a subscription but I’ve read the occasional memorable article on occasion. All in all, it’s a pretty good Catholic magazine.

Peace,
No, the Delatte commentary is written according to each chapter. The commentaries come after the chapter verse and is usually quite extensive. You could meditate on the chapter and commentary for days, actually–there is so much to it. Just went to Amazon and found one copy of it. Got it!!

Well here’s a question for you: Do any of you pray the Monastic Diurnal? I love it. I pray the traditional hours (Lauds, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers & Compline). Sadly, I have to pray it by myself as the remaining sisters in my community are now in a nursing home.

I’m so sorry to hear your remaining sisters are in a nursing home. Seriously, I will remember your sisters during this morning’s Rosary. How do you function as a community if you are the only active member? Will you ultimately affiliate yourself with another community in your Order? For example, Blue Cloud Monastery recently closed down because most of the monks were in their seventies, eighties and nineties. It appears they will disperse among monasteries with a younger population. I don’t know how you do it, Sister Terese. God bless you.

I haven’t as of yet. I have been considering it but haven’t taken the plunge. Since I pray the hours with my wife, we typically use the Breviary which can be found for free on dvineoffice.org and leave it at that. Its very easy since they put everything online and in proper order for you. However, I would like to have something more closely aligned with monastic tradition.

They make a monastic diurnal which is musically noted for chanting the hours and I am considering breaking down and getting that one at some point.

Peace,
