Sarah Palin is one of the great examples of the classist nature of the American media.
Criticizing her for her experience, seeming lack of knowledge regarding worldly affairs, that was all fair game. But I still remember the dismissals of her because she was from a rural area, because she was a ‘redneck’ or ‘white trash’. It really showed what the media thinks of the fly over people.

I do remember her being mocked and parodied on SNL to the effect. But so was Jimmy Carter in the same context.

You don’t remember that the entire Alaska congressional delegation was under an ethical cloud when she was named, including the governor. Her lack of background was evident along with her lack of training: Imagine if Ms. Harris had attended four different colleges to graduate in six years! Plus, she had a documented affair with an NBA athlete before she married.
But I don’t want to replay Sarah Palin. Will Ms. Harris get a fair shake? We’ll have to wait and see. As those magice 8 balls used to say: The signs are not favorable.

You have not yet defined what you mean by “stronger social safety net”. Be precise. I won’t answer to a vague generality whose meaning you have not defined.
You have not yet proved that a “stronger social safety net” whatever you mean by that, will reduce abortions. Maybe you still will.
I never said making it illegal will cause abortion to stop. It might reduce them. Might not. Certainly it would give the women who are being coerced an excuse not to have one if the “doctors” are no longer available. De-legalizing murder could also have a beneficial effect on children other than keeping them alive.

Yes he was and is. But those mocking him such as Charlie Chaplin were mocking what he did. Palin being from a rural area was targeted for mockery for that simple reason alone on occasion. That showed the classist nature of the media.

Palin played up her rural roots with the stories about hunting, ‘snow machines’ and the press conference at the turkey farm while the guy behind her beheaded birds. She could not have it both ways. If she’s going to wave that rural flag around don’t say other people are bringing it up to mock her.

You’re just repeating yourself. Reviewing a politician’s claims is standard in American political culture. That’s not classism. If Palin had started on the campaign trail saying she was a governor and ready to go, then asking her about shooting game from aircraft may have been some type of big city sneering. But that’s not what happened.
Kerry said he was ‘reporting for duty’ and the media were all over his war record, some quite inaccurately. But Kerry had put it out in the national dialog. That’s the same thing that Palin did. She highlighted differences between Alaska and the lower 48; she didn’t try to push her sameness and qualifications. So I don’t think it was any classism or rural prejudice in the media in the coverage of what she illustrated about herself.

Right, its not like anyone questioned the authenticity of Palin’s race or suggested she needed a race-lift. Or that anyone suggested she was not a real American because her parents were immigrants. No one in American politics would sink to those kind of low, classist attacks.
