Per Robert Bay’s post. This is a perfectly reasonable letter that I would not characterize as anti- anyone. It is pro-Catholic teaching.

That being said…it is in Illinois and likely will have little political impact.

People need to realize that this HHS mandate is only the first step in this administration’s agenda, the beginning of a long slippery slope to keep religious practices confined to the four walls of one’s home or place of worship. This is serious business, and people need to recognize this and vote accordingly.

My opinion? I think the Bishop did the right thing. We are Catholics, first and foremost. We must vote in accordance with Church teachings and oppose an administration that pushes anti-Catholic policies, i.e., the HHS mandate.

A rare moderator injection, but well timed. I was going to have to look this up. Too often exaggeration and spin get placed on Church statements, as per the Chicago Tribune’s unfortunate title.

There is nothing new in this letter. It re-iterated only the facts in accordance to what the Church has been saying for a year.

I am not voting for President Obama, who I frankly admire in many respects and for the good he has done, out of obedience to the teaching offered by our American Bishops. Life and religious liberty trumps social justice.

I am also not voting for Romney in order to be in compliance with the social teaching of the magisterium. I definitely do not admire his or Ryan’s actions in the campaign and cannot vote for someone who subscribes to the Ayn Rand philosophy of Objectivism. Therefore, I abstain.

This is the first time in my adult life that I have not voted for President I think. And it is really difficult for me. When I think of the terrible suffering of women whose actions enabled me and other women to vote, something about this feels really wrong. Nevertheless, . . .

I couldn’t open the links you provided, but I think what you wrote is very important.

First, I would like to know the media’s response to Billy Graham and Pastor Jeremiah’s message to vote for Romney?

This happened in one of the parishes in NYC and an email letter was generated so fast it made my head spin when I received it from a liberal democrat who worships God at the Catholic church.

What is interesting is that as soon as a Catholic Pastor opens his mouth about this topic, he is shot down by the media and also by some of the parishoners who call themselves practicing, devout Catholics.

Why?

Isn’t it the obligation of all our pastors whether Catholic or Protestant to inform their flocks on how the candidates stand on moral issues?

I normally do not like to speak for another, but I had the same dilemna. Abortion exists because of the philosophy that morality is a matter of self-interest. Jesus told us that if we hate our brother, we commit murder in our heart. That is because our attitude of murder is a sin equal unto murder. Even in law, attempted murder carries a penalty, in some cases, as murder.

So, if we keep the philosphy of utilitarian self-interest, abortion will never be elimitated, or even reduced. We have two wars, one for the culture and then the political/legal war. It is hard to say which will be most effective in stopping abortion, but I lean toward winning the culture first.

About 30 years late, but good. Unless the Church takes a more active role in the life of the faithful and encourages them to take a more active role in society and politics, they will be brushed aside in their timidity.

Wouldn’t it be better to have been positive? Rather than have the parish priests read an anti-Obama letter, it would be better IMO to have them read a pro-Romney letter.

No mormon is truly pro-life, despite what Romney says on the campaign trail. I lived near Salt Lake city for a long time and have mormon family and friends. Mormons believe that all souls were created beforehand, and some have to come down to earth for a while. As such, their church has no strong feelings on abortion one way or the other. This can be reflected in Romney’s rhetoric and record. I doubt he really cares much one way or the other. He is simply pandering for the votes, and make no mistake, if he thinks opposing abortion would cost him a second term, he won’t be opposing it.

Obama on the other hand, is indeed pro-choice. He has been emphatically clear on this issue.

So, to say one candidate is pro-life and the other is pro-choice is wrong. One is pro-choice, one is apathetic.
