- “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.” Naval Marshal General Isoroku Yamamoto (following his forces’ attack on Pearl Harbor, 1941).*
“Probe with a bayonet. If you meet steel, withdraw. If you meet flesh, push.” – (an English translation of V.I. Lenin’s dictum for conducting a class war).
How do these two well known quotes from America’s enemies apply to this thread?
The Obama Administration’s over the top HHS mandates that require even Catholic Institutions like schools and hospitals to violate the teachings of the Church – in some cases unto mortal sin for the collaborators – could be seen (nicely put) as a trial balloon or (not so nicely) as “probing with a bayonet” to see what the Church is made of.
As Bishop after Bishop begins to assert the power of his office to oppose the assault on Catholic entities (peacefully but firmly counselling their flock to vote against those who champion the HHS violation of the First Amendment rights of the Church); a “sleeping giant” may tip the national elections in small or BIG ways.
True, the more vocal Bishops have been from the smaller Dioceses (Peoria, Rockford and Springfield, Illinois, Green Bay, Wisconsin; North Dakota) so far … but even this slightly spun headline with the term “Anti-Obama” snugly fitting into the headline’s limitations with a bit of controversial “juice” in place of factual accuracy … might tend to have long term consequences for the political enemies of the Church.
Another bottom line sweep of an election like 2010’s that returned power of the congress to the Republicans when it seemed statistically impossible given the 2008 election’s results – and a wholesale reorganization of the Democratic Party might have to occur.
Parties out of power tend to do that. Where did we go wrong might obviously point directly to the unprovoked attack on the Catholic Church, when in 2008 it had been reported that Obama garnered a supposed 59% of the lay Catholic vote.
A substantial loss in that big demographic is part of what is turning former Obama blue states to red (Indiana, North Carolina, Colorado, Virginia) and has the formerly solid “rust belt” states of Pennsylvania and Michigan coming into play.
270towin.com/ < This latest electoral college map has Romney over the top
with 273 EC votes in a “no-tossups” scenario (for the first time). It gives Nevada and Colorado to Romney (plausible, especially considering each state flanks Romney powerhouse state Utah) – as well as Florida and Virginia.
Iowa is also listed as a Romney state (plausible too since he’d spent so much time there and split the Iowa caucus votes with Rich Santorum … and for a while was declared the winner). For similar reasons Romney winning New Hampshire (where he has a summer home) is not confounding.
Obama was given close call wins in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota on the map … and was close enough to win if he could retain all these and peel away Nevada or Iowa … and even just adding New Hampshire to the total here would force a 269-269 electoral college tie.
An Obama loss … even by a little will have the party seriously question their attack on the Catholic Church. A win … even by a little, and the war didn’t matter so much and the
probing can become more serious. In my opinion.
