  1. ND is holding up Biden as an example of a good Catholic, who has supported the Catholic Church.
  2. We know this is false, as he publicly and obstinately rejects Catholic teaching.
  3. We know that Fr. Jenkins is not ignorant of Catholic teaching.
  4. We know that Fr. Jenkins is not ignorant of Biden’s positions and opposition/rejection of Church teaching.

How do we square the outrage in some quarters about Notre Dame with the Pope’s honoring of abortion activist Emma Bonino? Bonino has done a lot more to promote abortion than Biden ever did or will, but the Pope praised her unreservedly. Why is that acceptable from the Pontiff but not from a Catholic institution like Notre Dame?

The Pope is free to speak as he wishes. He is a human being, and in this case he is not speaking on a matter requiring some assent of faith. His comments are taken seriously in a matter like this for sure. People look for signs of approval and disapproval.
Did he know of her past? I don’t know. Speculation is that may not have. Don’t know.

If he did, one can ask the question if his comments were prudent.
Just as we can ask if it is prudent in the case of Notre Dame.

The Pope’s comments in praise of Bonino were met with substantial outrage and condemnation. There was even a thread on CAF. Many were horrified at his comments and spoke out loudly about it.

Can’t believe he did not know anything about her.

She is from where? Italy. He is from where? Argentina.

And he has been doing what for the last 2 years? Dealing with a world-wide Church with over 1,000,000,000 members - okay, maybe that is only a part-time job, and he has ample time to put his feet up and aquatint himself with the good, the bad, and the ugly in Italy.

I am not the least bit surprised he may not have had a complete run down on her, or any other people in Italy who might be more than a peasant picking grapes or making gelato… meaning that there are a whole lot of people who can claim more than 15 minutes of fame in the public press in Italy. As in elsewhere too.

He tends to be more spontaneous than the last two popes, and some consider that to be a mark that he is somewhere between a poor pope and a horrible one. I sincerely suspect that he did not have a brief on her.

I also suspect that he knew a whole lot more about who the “players” were in Argentina.

And I don’t consider that a mistake is anything more than a mistake. I have made one or two myself…

What now!! The Vatican invites Bernie Sanders to speak at the Vatican. Should the Catholic status of the Vatican be removed? :rotfl:

The Vatican didn’t invite Bernie Sanders to speak at the Vatican. He was invited to a conference taking place at the Vatican along with a large number of other people , none of whom are running for the president of United States . There is somewhat of a dispute as to whether the Vatican invited him or he called up and invited himself.

He knows.

“It is true she [Bonino] thinks very differently from us, but never mind. We have to look at people, at what they do.”

Pope Francis
The Pope’s possible ignorance of Bonino’s stance is unlikely given his justifications in the interview. She has been for decades the most prominent supporter of abortion in Italy. Moreover, the Pope already received criticism for his contact with Bonino in 2015 when he called her about her cancer and invited her to the Vatican.

Bernie Sanders did indeed speak at the Vatican and he was indeed invited by the Vatican.
Sanders spoke Friday at a conference celebrating the 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s “Centesimus Annus.”
The April 15-16 conference was sponsored by the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, which fosters dialogue between scientists, politicians and various experts.
A progressive Argentinian Bishop known for his open support of the Democratic Party has invited Presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders to address a high-level Vatican meeting, contravening Church policy.
Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, the Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, who has been publicly honored by top abortion activists in New York, has given Sanders top billing in a conference to discuss “changes in politics, economics and culture.”
The Vatican has insisted that Catholic institutions not offer platforms to speakers who publicly agitate for moral positions contrary to Church teaching, notably on the abortion issue. Notre Dame University is currently under fire for honoring staunchly pro-choice Joseph Biden with its prestigious Laetare Medal.
A number of observers also criticized Sanchez last May for offering a Vatican platform to known proponents of abortion and population control like Jeffrey Sachs and UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon, whom Sanchez had invited to speak at the Vatican in an earlier conference on climate change.
Bernie Sanders has identified himself as a socialist and an advocate of a woman’s right to abortion, consistently receiving ratings of 100% from NARAL Pro-Choice America. He has also supported UN population control policies and voted “no” on banning partial birth abortions.
However Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, the chancellor of the Academy, speaking on the phone from New York, said he extended the invitation to Sanders, though he repeatedly declined to say who initiated the contact.
“We are interested in having him because we have two presidents coming from Latin America. I thought it would be good to have an authoritative voice from North America,” Sanchez Sorondo said. Asked when the invitation was extended, he said, “Quite some time ago.”
U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was invited to speak at an April 15 Vatican event by the Vatican, a senior papal official said on Friday, denying a report that Sanders had invited himself.
“I deny that. It was not that way,” Monsignor Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo told Reuters in a telephone interview while he was traveling in New York. Sorondo, a close aide to Pope Francis, is chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, which is hosting the event.
He said it was his idea to invite Sanders.
A Bloomberg report quoted Margaret Archer, president of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, as saying that Sanders had broken with protocol by failing to contact her office first.
“This is not true and she knows it. I invited him with her consensus,” said Sorondo, who is senior to Archer.
An invitation to Sanders dated March 30, which was emailed to Reuters, was signed by Sorondo and also included Archer’s name.
Archer took issue with Sanders’ failure to contact her before publicizing that he will attend the event, characterizing it as a “monumental discourtesy.”
But Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, the chancellor of the Academy who is senior to Archer and is also a close aide to Pope Francis, denied Archer’s version of events. Sorondo told Reuters that he had issued the invitation, and denied that the senator had invited himself.
“This is not true and she knows it. I invited him with her consensus,” Sorondo said.
A copy of the invitation given to reporters claimed it was extended “on behalf” of Archer and conference organizers. The document was signed by Coronado.

The Vermont senator’s presidential campaign emailed reporters on Friday morning to announce that he had been invited to the event, a conference on “social, economic and environmental issues.” The conference, organized by the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, will be held on April 15 — just days before the crucial New York primary, in which Sanders is hoping to upset his rival Hillary Clinton in her home state.
The conference also includes two controversial leftist Latin American presidents, Rafael Correa of Ecuador and Evo Morales of Bolivia, as well as Columbia University economist Jeffrey Sachs.
Adding to the confusion, Sachs said that he had helped the Vatican arrange the invitation to Sanders. “[But] the academy sent the invitation, it’s pure and simple,” he told The Atlantic. “A lot of people in the Vatican respect him a lot. He is speaking in the same kind of moral themes that Pope Francis, and the social teachings of the Church, promote, which is a moral economy.”
