Power to tax comes with the 16th Amendment.

Right to own gun comes with the 2nd Amendment.

These two Amendments can be repealed or modified by another Amendment.
These things have no beating on morality.

The USCCB needs to get out of politics and start doing what they’re supposed to be doing, which is teaching the actual Catholic faith to Catholics.

So you would give money to the drunk knowing that he will buy alcohol with the money? Whom does that help?
Let’s go back to the topic of the thread and stop the twisting of what is said.

I fully support the Bishops call to action, in response to the attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School. From some of the arguments I’ve see presented, I feel more and more drawn to supporting a ban of certain weapons.

They are teaching the faith, and how we should react in a secular world. It just so happens that some accuse them of politics when it goes against some personal interest.

Nothing about being Catholic says we must support gun bans. This is something that Catholics can disagree on in good conscience.

They are not teaching the faith. They are meddling in American politics.

10.1% of the American population is now ex-Catholic. 80% of Catholics don’t attend mass weekly. And yet, they’re mouthing off about politics.

Convenient. Conservatives tell others what they must believe and do, but when it comes to self sacrifice, ‘we’re at liberty to disagree with that.’

Now, the Bishops didn’t specifically say ‘support gun bans.’ That’s the dramatic which appears to be aimed at inciting others to push back, but it lacks constructive discussion to find reasonable solutions.

I read an article today that 58% agree with gun controls. That’s controls and not bans. What we see are the one way thinkers, denying anything will work. It’s not constructive and will be viewed as such; then we’ll see an imposition of laws instead of something being worked out that we all can live with.

This is American secular politics. This is not religion.

It’s not convenient it’s the truth. This isn’t dogma. Don’t treat it like it is. There are plenty of good arguments against gun bans

Who are you talking about ‘mouthing off about politics?’ Give us the source for such great insight.

The problem I see are Americans placing government rights above Church teachings when they demand Bishops stay off the subject. It’s not a meddling, it’s our spiritual teachers giving example of how we should live in a secular world. The secular world is secondary, or supposed to be, to Christians.

And what exactly is Church teaching on guns? I wasn’t aware that the Vatican took a position.

I didn’t say it was dogma. I said it was teachings, and it’s easily dismissed when it seems to be inconvenient against some secular rights, or personal views.

Read the threads, give it thought, pray and follow your conscience. That’s what we’re all obligated to do.

Mind finding a quote from the Vatican starting that we must support gun bans?

My dentist teaches me how to take care of my teeth too, and that’s not dogma or religion either. Neither is gun control. That’s American politics.

Last time, no one has stated bans, except gun right advocates. I have posted the Call to Action from the USCCB.

I won’t be responding to your posts. A few have twisted what I said, and I just don’t feel the discussions are constructive. As I say, listen to the Church, pray, and act on your conscience.

The USCCB has exactly 0 weight in any matters.

AMERICAN POLITICS and RELIGION are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.

Gun control laws are American politics. They are not religion.
