Where is the Church leadership? What a blatant twisting of Catholic teaching. “Woe to those who call Evil, Good.”

Could you explain how Church teaching was twisted? We’ve had a few threads about this Mass, which was cancelled once because it was scheduled too close to the annual Gay Pride festival in Boston and might have been seen as an endorsement.

I know that one of the concerns, perhaps the main concern, is that the Mass might somehow give the signal that same-sex activity is morally acceptable. Was anything said or done at the Mass on Sunday which would support that concern?

In the youtube video, the priest of the parish said that the Mass was held with everyone welcome in the door and everyone welcome at the “table”. That seems to me to be supporting of many different activities that would ordinarily not be acceptable. 🤷

Totally Agree with you (“Where is Church leadership”)?

I’m surprised that St. Cecilia"s Parish Priest would offer Holy Communion to to these Gay people living Same-Sex relationships having full knowledge of their state of sin.

This was blasphemous and utter disrespect toward Jesus present on the Sacrificial Altar of our Lord.

Does Canon 915 have any bearing here:confused:
Can. 915 Those upon whom the penalty of excommunication or interdict has been imposed or declared, and others who obstinately persist in manifest grave sin, are not to be admitted to holy communion.
How does one try to whitewash a gathering like this in the Catholic Church and call it good and productive?

I thought the Archdiocese of Boston was on the road to healing after the Sex Scandals rocked the Church. And now this? Gay Masses?

Ten Questions the Archdiocese of Boston Won’t Answer about Gay Ministry at St. Cecilia’s

Was there anything done that reminded the people that they should not act on their same sex attraction? Would that many people show up if that was the message?

That is the issue. How can one “support” people who are struggling to not fall into a certain kind of sin when they do not feel it is a sin and you do not tell them that it is? Because, frankly, there is no need to hang out with other gay people or have a gay Mass if you are trying to* not* act on or identify yourself by your sin or your inclination to sin.

Correct me if I’m wrong but are you trying to say these gay people don’t have any iota of a clue that their way of life is not sinful?

Gee! Have they been in cryogenic freeze in the last 20,30,40 years? No idea that a gay sexual lifestyle is not sin?

A large number of gay people believe that the Lord created them the way they are (I believe that a combination of nature and nurture cause the problem). So, if you believe the Lord created you gay, then, obviously, the Church is wrong to not allow you to partner up.

So, they reject the Church teaching. Some do not, but a large number are looking for the Church to bend to them. Masses like this are the result.

That is a good question. Does anyone know?

Don’t think me as insensitive or being even in the least homophobic.

I think there are far better ways the Church can help Catholic Gays carrying a heavy cross
than by offering a public Mass and offering them Holy Communion to boot.

That’s like saying their sin is accepted as OK in the Church.

And most certainly its not the Church that should bend to them.
All Catholics are held accountable to the letter of Moral Laws in the Church; homosexuals, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered included if they want to call themselves Catholic.

Isn’t that Church teaching?
No. Only Catholics. Only Catholics properly disposed to receive. That’s Church teaching.

This was a widey publicized “all are welcome” event. It was not a Catholics only event. It is not Church teaching that anyone who comes in the door is welcome to Communion just because they tag it a “All Are Welcome” Mass. (That was the actual name, not “Gay Mass”)

No. Only Catholics.
How does one become Catholic if that person is barred at the door? Are you actually saying that non-Catholics shouldn’t be allowed to attend Mass? I don’t think that is Church teaching.
Only Catholics properly disposed to receive. That’s Church teaching.
Reception of the Eucharist is a separate issue from simply being welcomed to Mass. If people not properly disposed did actually receive Communion, then it would be a serious offense. But do we know if that happened?

How can you propose that it didn’t happen? The parish had 700 people there for Sunday 11:00 am Mass. I’m sure their were regular parishioners there at Mass too.

What was the priest supposed to do, divide the straight parishioners from the gay ones in attendance and say you can receive and you cannot?

You know what I am saying - you’re twisting my words. 😛

Of course everyone is welcome to come in the door, to attend Mass, to come often, in fact. What the priest said was everyone is also welcome to “the table”. That is not Church teaching.

I’m sorry, I thought that every Mass was celebrated for all, as in everyone. I didn’t realize we needed to have specifically “gay” Masses.

I can’t say that in any parish, on any Sunday, that every person receiving Communion is properly disposed. I rather suspect that some are not.
What was the priest supposed to do, divide the straight parishioners from the gay ones in attendance and say you can receive and you cannot?
I don’t think the matter of being properly disposed comes down to being gay or not, so that division wouldn’t matter. Being gay isn’t sinful, engaging in homosexual activity is.

As for what the priest should have, could have or may have done (does any know?) is briefly explain Catholic teaching about proper reception. Surely this would be a sensible thing to do if he expected that a sizable number of non-Catholics were present.

I wonder, where are the Masses celebrating people who desire to have adulterous affairs?

or

Where are the Masses celebrating people who are thinking of getting divorced and remarried?

or

Where are the Masses celebrating people who are seriously thinking of living together?

or

Where are the Masses celebrating people who reject the Catholic faith and have no intention on returning?

Agreed.

However; given the banner of the:
Mission of St. Cecilia Rainbow Ministry: Welcoming Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, and Transgendered (LGBT) Catholics to worship God and to speak openly and safely, and to embrace Jesus’ call to unconditional love. We help LGBT Catholics seek reconciliation with the Church to enrich a spirit-filled life.
One has to seriously ask is the Mass the proper venue of reconciliation to bring Catholic LGBT’s back into the Church? This is the questionable action.

Not unlike Marriage Prep, Baptism courses, and the sacrament of Confirmation formation and Reconciliation; there are better instructional ways of bringing lost sheep back into the fold so to speak, before one can fully appreciate and humbly partake in the Catholic Mass.

Centurian Guard has simply posted blogger material - nothing official, only personal comments from persons who did not actually attend the liturgy and know zip about what really occurred.

The reporter on Youtube was from NECN (New England Cable News), and there was no filming of the actual homily which may have given instructions regarding reception of the Eucharist and chastity. It may have been a pre-mass announcement. Or maybe none at all. We don’t know. What is certain though, is that non-Catholic news sources are not entirely reliable.

Fr. Groeschel has had several announcements in his live show decrying the bigotry and false reporting that the New York Times engages in.** Many such reporters hate Catholics and do not print the entire truth, preferring to engage in sensationalism that depicts the Church in a horrific light.**

I played Father’s youtube, and it was only “selective comments” OUTSIDE of Mass, which tell us nothing at all about the truth of what took place. I seriously doubt that Voris knows exactly what took place either. Nothing was mentioned about his having attended the liturgy to qualify him as a first-hand honest reporter. It is well-known that he indulges in acrimonious grandstanding.

I have much respect for Fr. Groeschel… However there are many Catholic sites decrying the actions of this NYC parish. As for secular media outlets, they will scandalize any Catholic function as long it sells newspapers. Given the significance of National Gay Pride Day Parades through many city streets and several countries a few weeks ago its any wonder this Catholic story is gravitating attention.
