British Family Accidentally Enters U.S., Detained by ICE

I think in times like these , all entry points into the States should be marked.
There have been a few countries that have put out travel warnings on going to the USA (for reasons unrelated to this thread). Perhaps Canada will put up some markings for the safety of the people on their side of the border; when it comes to accidental crossings there appear to be a lot of people in the USA that can lack in compassion.

I’m betting that the 3 month old child won’t even remember it let alone be traumatized for life because of it. 😎

It sounds as though something shady is going on. Definitely more to this story but we won’t get it from the Washington Post.

I wonder what would happen if I were to accidentally cross a rural border with Germany or Russia, maybe Japan or China. Opps, sorry didn’t know where I was going there. I’ll be on my way.

The victim-blaming is pretty par-for-the-course here. Fundamental rights violated with indefinite detention and no legal representation? Toughen up. It’s good for you.

I was also bracing for the inevitable pseudo-skepticism. Anything that doesn’t fall in line with a Fox-News narrative is “fishy.”

How long ago was this?

I’m guessing that border patrol agents are like the police, some pleasant and just, others mean and corrupt.

Sounds like a typical Boy Scout campout or weekend fishing with my hubby. Nobody was traumatized for life. Goodness, what whimps we’ve become.
And were you forced to go on a Boy Scout campout or a fishing weekend by ICE officers or did you go of your own free will? That would be the difference.

Let’s see how many insults you have come up with here:
drama queens
snowflakes
whimps [sic]
But don’t be a spineless whiny baby who will be traumatized for life. That’s just silly nonsense.
No doubt you think that you are very clever for having all these different ways of insulting people at your fingertips, and no doubt you think that you are a very superior sort of person because if you were to be arrested by ICE officers, separated from your family, transported to the other side of the continent, and kept in horrible conditions it would be water off a duck’s back. Insulting people like this is a way of denying the reality or the legitimacy of their own experiences and feelings.

Actually, the most severe traumas that people experience are often the ones that we go through very early in life, especially during the period before we have the verbal skills to conceptualise our experiences.

No, I think I would be pretty mad. But it wouldn’t traumatize me for life. I’d get over it.

Apparently there’s more to the story.

As British citizens, the family was entitled to visit the U.S. without a visa.

“They could just come to the United States with a passport,” said attorney Bridget Cambria, who worked on the civil rights complaint that has been filed on behalf of the family with the Department of Homeland Security. “The reason it sounds silly is because it is silly.”
And some more about their “Boy Scout Camp”:
“This facility is frigid,” said Connors. “The staff here first told us they cannot turn on the heat in the building until the end of next month,” even though temperatures are in the 50s at night.

As a result, her son’s health is suffering, she says.

A few days ago, “[he] woke up with his left eye swollen and teary … also his skin is rough and blotchy,” Connor wrote.
Illegal entry, according to this second link.

@RuthAnne

The big concern for the parents, as stated, is the child , not immunised, getting an illness that could prove fatal. Or debilitating
“We will be traumatized for the rest of our lives by what the United States government has done to us,”

Stuff happens. Such drama queens. Get over it. We don’t need everyone to be snowflakes.
This is very uncharitable.

as is this
Get mad. That’s understandable. Get compensated. That’s understandable. But don’t be a spineless whiny baby who will be traumatized for life. That’s just silly nonsense.

If I am taking a baby on a weekend camping trip, I ensure that baby is well provided for. There is a big difference. Do you really believe a mother describing sleeping on the floor and not wanting to put her young infant on the floor to sleep in an extremely cold setting is what camping is all about?

@Horton a traveller cannot mistakenly pass from China to Japan. It takes either a boat or a plane to travel between the two.

I realize it’s happened before. Rogue cops exist, sadly. But it’s also happened before that various segments of the press have omitted details, or flat-out lied in an effort to gain ratings via sensationalism or push an agenda. Chevy trucks will explode if hit from the side, Shirley Sherrod being fired for a “racist” speech, being told that only the press can view WikiLeaks emails, editing George Zimmerman’s 911 call, showing Trayvon as either 10 years old or alternatively as a “scary thug” with gold teeth and tats (wasn’t him), falsely labelling full-auto firearms as semi-auto, etc.

I’m not trying to seem unsympathetic or callous, but in this case I’m withholding judgement pending more info.

More info: per the BBC, the couple had been previously denied entry to the U.S., and video appears to show them “deliberately” entering the country, not exactly swerving to avoid hitting Bambi.

This stuff just got interesting.

I’m just wondering why else nobody is believing accounts of the bad conditions at detentions camps
I suspect it has more to do with the phony press accounts exaggerating conditions than the race of the detainees. “Fool me once…”

Entering the US at a place other than a checkpoint is a misdemeanor.

UK passport holders don’t need a visa normally.

I wonder why they were not permitted inthe first time?

This is actually not uncommon. Lots of govt facilities actually have rules about when they turn on the heat for the winter and when they turn on AC for the summer.

Do other government facilities host overnight guests in 50-degree temperatures under tin blankets?
This post was on topic.

Flaggers are lame.
I didn’t flag it, but I’m guessing for name-calling.
This stuff just got interesting.
Even more interesting. https://whyy.org/articles/british-f...ill-be-traumatized-for-the-rest-of-our-lives/
In its statement, CBP said that two of the adults who were arrested had been previously denied travel authorization to the United States, but did not elaborate.

“That means they could have filled out a form wrong,” said Cambria.
It looks like the couple also received a veiled threat to get their newborn baby snatched away from them.

Interesting indeed. Also from the same article:
After their arrest, Canada refused to allow their return, said the CBP spokesman.
This is starting to get REAL interesting. The U.S. detains them, they’re portrayed as innocent, but Canada won’t allow the back in? Something smells funky about this.

I’d love to be a fly on the wall there.

It could be anything. Canada may first want to investigate why the family was turned away the first time, i.e. running a global human trafficking ring or forgetting to fill in line item 4G on Form 1234567.

What concerns me, and what precipitated the thread, was their account of the prison conditions, which validate what we’ve heard from multiple other detainees and human rights groups.
