California Latinos fearful after immigration raids

“We’re terrified. The police could come for us at any time and deport us,” she said in Spanish earlier this week as diners fingered maize tortillas stuffed with beans and pork scratchings and chatted softly.

The 55-year-old undocumented worker from Guatemala is among many Hispanics deeply shaken by recent immigration raids at the heart of Latino communities in southern California.

**GOOD! they should feel terrified. Did they think that this country would sit back forever and just let this continue without enforcing our laws? They had to know when they came into this country…ILLEGALLY…that sooner or later they might have to pay the piper. The only ones I have sympathy for…and the ONLY ones are the children. But theirparents should have made plans for this eventuality. Last spring when they were holding their rallies…IN OUR FACES…they should have figured that Mr. and Mrs. America would get fed up with it. As it is now…our government is NOT doing enough. This should be happening on a much larger scale…but at least it is a start. The woman in the paragraph above says they are terrified that at ANYTIME the police could come and deport them…they should be looking over their shoulders…and she was speaking in SPANISH…I wonder if that is because she hasn’t bothered to learn English…or she wanted to flaunt the fact that she is Hispanic…speaking, Spanish…in the USA.

ICE…keep it up!!👍

Gee, Imagine ICE actually enforcing the law. I sure have little pity for the packing plant and I hope they get fined out of business. I was also pleased to see the local parish step in to help the families locate those arrested. Law enforcement did their job and the Church did hers.

Funny no? All the articles are about people at work or people looking for work. So what about the premise on these thread which claims they are here for the freebies? My guess is the proponents of such leave their celebration and attend speeches concerning reducing of American freedoms to prevent exporting jobs. Every company affected looks at how they missed the better option to export the job first. Had they exported the job they would not face these issues. But do not worry other companies will get it, more jobs will be exported to deal with the issue of employee raids. That my friends is the unintended consequences of these types of actions.

The story from the first link…the part about the Company firing 75(?) workers for not having documentation…then the other employees going on strike to protest that decision…I think that shows a strong sense of community amongst the employees. I wonder if our mainstream, (soccer-mom), citizens have any similar feelings, and if those feelings will ever be expressed. Then, of course, the local Priest got involved in the mediation and helped smooth everything out. Wonder if some Priest will help solve the whole issue on a larger scale? So far, I’ve been agitating in the political arena. But, it hit me, why not ask for help from the Church? What if all of us, on both sides of this issue, asked for help from the Church? Might the Church help us mediate this dispute? Yeah, I’m probably just dreaming, but, what if? jt

Here in the state where I live there were 2 packing plants that were raided in December. The communities banded together to give aid to those families who were affected. They did all they could do to make it easier on the families and I have no problem with that. The packing plant itself had grants available for rent, food, prescriptions. What I had a problem with was an illegal hispanic woman who was bad mouthing the government for doing their job…as she was getting out of her new Yukon…I hope she gave help to her other illegal friends…as did the good old Americans.

The second link’s story shows me that these actions give the illegal immigrants pause, but, does NOT send them packing. Little wonder when you consider they feel they can cross the border again tomorrow. It’s a start, but where is the follow-through on our part? jt

Working and getting the freebies are not necessarily mutually exclusive, Tex. Before retiring, I had up to 8 very well paid legal immigrants working. One had brought his family and was working toward becoming a citizen. Of the 8, he was the only one who participated in the company group insurance plan. The others all lived in one rented house and sent most of their paychecks out of the country. For medical care, they hit the emergency rooms and let the taxpayers foot the bill.

It’s kind of hard to export jobs working with a perishable commodity like meat. The plants are, of necessity, located where the animals are grown. Through cooperative type agreements, the production and processing is controlled from beginning to end. Chickens are the big thing here. The processor assists the growers in getting loans to build growing sheds, sells them the chicks and feed, and buys back the birds when they’re big enough for slaughter. It seems to be profitable for a lot of people and provides a lot of jobs. The transportation costs to export the processing part of this integrated operation would negate any possible savings in labor costs.

That said, some years ago, the Japanese built a complete plywood mill on a ship in order to get around some import restrictions that were in effect at the time. The ship would pull into a west coast port, load up with logs, then loll around in international waters while they turned the logs into finished plywood. The ship would pull back into port and sell us back our trees in the form of plywood at a lower cost than that of our domestic mills. I suppose something similar could happen to a meat packing operation, but I don’t see it happening.

Free medical… free lunches… using forged documents to get welfare yada yada yada.

BTW: They won’t be out sourciing blue collar work to other countries.

The most jobs I’m aware of being out sourced are call centers… and tech jobs ( I’m in the tech industry ).

Historical shipping costs were 10-15% during regulation. Shipping costs dropped to as low as 4% a few years back, and have since increases back to near 10%. These numbers vary greatly between industries. Concerning meat chicken and beef can easily be grown and processed in Central America, in fact a great deal of the beef industry had moved down in to that region in the 1970-1980 due to US land costs, only to be plagued with political usability. Concerning shipping the meat to the US consider this, which costs more per pound meat or bananas? If the economics supports the banana shipping it will likely support the meat shipping.

But remember the key issue is causing jobs to be exported by not allowing legal means to affectively fill the jobs

So why do ICE officials not arrest at the free medical & lunch locations?? Better yet why do you not tell the ICE exactly where the location is?

I have seen articles concerning thousands of blue collar jobs being outsourced. Companies built new replacement plants in other countries- washers, refrigerators, television, auto parts, etc

I would if I knew where they were congregating. But, I doubt that ICE would do much. The interstate through my state is often used as a means of getting illegals from one area of the country to another. After our state’s patrol has stopped many, many vehicles for either reckless driving etc. they have found many illegals stashed away. They detain them and call immigration who tells them they only have ONE person on duty and to let them GO!!! I don’t know what it is going to take for this country to get serious about stopping this illegal trafficking. But it has to stop. Maybe it will take the death or injury of a Congressman’s child to get them serious. Most of these vehicles try to outrun the cops and end up wrecking…hopefully no innocent person or family is taken out because of them.

Same old same old
You can not give the location for the same reason others can not, it probably does not exist. Yet you feel free to come on the forum and tell others it exists. Now it is the “bad patrol” maybe we could hire some immigrates to work for the patrol, and ICE? The patrol does not need the ICE to arrest the illegal immigrates so is your jail full of such. BTW can you cite evidence " Most of these vehicles try to outrun the cops and end up wrecking" or would you rather just leave it as another unfounded accusation.( like the pregnant women you see crossing the border)

I am not going to give further information, because that would involve telling where I am from and on this subject I am not so sure I want everyone to know where I live, as this gets quite heated. If you don’t believe me, tough, this is what is going on and I have heard it so reported many times.
All YOU have to do if you are so disbelieving that this is happening…is to Google and see for yourself. No, the patrol needs for immigration to come and take cusotdy of the illegals and many times they choose not to do so…hence they are let go.
BTW…where did I ever say that I see pregnant women crossing the border? LOL!!

I also don’t take kindly to being called what amounts to a liar. You can choose to believe or not…but do NOT cast doubt on my character.

From the link in post #18…

"This was a smuggling vehicle," said Carl Rusnok, a spokesman for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Dallas office. "These people were being smuggled and transported illegally."

You are right Tex…LOL…it isn’t happening…it must be a figment of many peoples’ imaginations…
