Obama received 52.9% of the popular vote

Obama received 54% of the Catholic vote.

I really don’t want to get into politics. I just wish that people did not always find excuses to kill.
Not trying to derail, but that statistic is flawed.

Catholics who attend mass weekly voted around 41% for Obama. Catholics who attend mass less than weekly voted for him around 68%. IN other words, Catholics in name only, not the actual faithful ones.

Either way, that is bad

By your own definition, 41% of devout Catholics voted for Obama. 68% of the less devout Catholics voted for him. Your statistics are even more mystifying.

Obama’s alleged support of partial birth abortion is sketchy at best, and a complete fallacy at the worst.

The claim that he supports this is because of an Act Obama prevented from getting a hearing in 2003 while an Illinois Junior Senator. Essentially, there are two reasons Obama stopped this Act in its tracks: There was already a ban of partial-birth abortion on the Illinois law books, this act was unnecessary in a legal sense. Also, this Act not only spoke of partial-birth abortion, which yes, is terrible, but it also spoke of other abortions, and would in fact undermine Rowe vs. Wade. This, according to the Supreme Court, would be Unconstitutional thus illegal. This new act also failed to include wording that would allow an early abortion of a fetus when it would kill the mother to continue the pregnancy.

Thus, since partial-birth was already banned technically, and since this new Act’s actual purpose was to undermine the supreme court and did not allow for a mother’s safety, Obama denied it as a possibility.

I’m not pledging my support for any candidate or policy, I just think we should in fact support the candidate that is our elect, for support is what drives our Government, and our Gov. needs quite a bit of “drive” to fix the mess its left.

Thanks.

I think the chances of repentance will increase once someone knows the day of their death.

I’m not being trite, I think this is true.

Our job as a society is to protect the innocent.

Some people have forfeited the right to live among us. Let’s pray for their conversion then send them on their way.
I am struggling to find the source of your information. Please don’t say the New Testiment because that would be false. Are we still living in the days before the preachings of peace by Christ? Are we not suppose to resemble our lives to His? When did He kill? Who are we to decide when a person has forfeited his life?

I have read read Mr Obama’s statements before the Il Senate. They are, to say the least, chilling. There is nothing ambiguous about his protection of unfettered abortion, including the right of the mother to “choose” even after a live birth.

Ted Bundy, Charles Manson, and every other sadistic mass murderer were afforded more rights than those whose only crime was conception.

His stated intention to sign FOCA obliterates the partial birth ban is equally unambiguous. So your point that he didn’t want to duplicate state (and federal) law is well taken. He doesn’t want to duplicate it, he wants to terminate it.

Hey, I never said that Catholics were perfect. The problem is one of pure ignorance. I wish it was 4.1% and that the 68% would leave the faith until they learn what it is all about, but that is my selfish wish

I meant no criticism. I truly find the statistics mystifying.

I don’t understand Cultural Catholics or self described Cafeteria Catholics. Although I was baptized Catholic, I stopped calling myself a Catholic as soon as I was an adult and moved from my parent’s house. Prior to that time I followed the rituals out of respect for my parents. It never occurred to me to call myself Catholic after I stopped believing in Church teachings.

Why don’t the Cafeteria Catholics become Anglican or Lutheran? That is a mystery as well.

I don’t understand, either. I will continue to pray for those who have wandered from the faith (consider yourself now on my prayer list) but I am mystified at why more don’t leave. If I had no intention of living up to the tenets of the faith, even those I find difficult to grapple with, I’d find some nice Eastern religion on which to hang my hat. It seems almost cowardly and hateful to me to cause a ruckus and scandal to a body simply because it won’t bend to my will.

I have not read what you have- thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut. I don’t support his views, just support what I hope he will do for the country. Thats all : ).

I’m not sure this is actually a purely Catholic question. Any Christian, at least theoretically, subscribes to the belief that murder is wrong. Abortion is clearly murder. Only the secular culture, not the churches, have sought to redefine abortion as something that it is not (just a choice, a woman’s prerogative, etc.) So it’s pointless to nitpick among the various sects. It’s truly not a “Catholic” thing.

But of course Catholics are held to a different standard. We are called upon to NOT support pro-“choice” (i.e. pro-death) candidates. Our church leaders say as much. But their leadership is diluted when pro-death Catholic politicians are not denied the Eucharist. From this sort of confusion, chaos ensues. It would be useful if the Catholic leadership in this country acquired a spine.

If only people of all religions and moral philosophies would live up to the best standard of their belief, what a world of peace and compassion this would be.

Leave the faith? What defines a Catholic, is it just a title or is it based upon ones deeds and actions?

So us as catholics and christains in general were faced with a lose lose situation. We can either vote for one who supports the killing of babies, or we can vote for another who supports the killing of innocents…How do we make that choice? Abortion is gonna be here regardless of how the president feels about it. But Obama at least wants to stop the war. Personally I still voted for McCain because I can’t even begin to think of following under a leader who supports abortion so strongly as Obama does. But either way, each candidate supported death. I don’t see what’s so complicated about PEACE!!!

A Catholic is someone who believes all that the Church has set down as doctrine. Belief is not a mere intellectual exercise, as many seem to want to make it. Belief gives rise to actions consistent with that belief. One of those “actions” is voting in accordance with your conscience, a conscience that has been formed in accordance with such beliefs.

A person who picks and chooses what they want to believe, and justifies acting against doctrine when it pleases them, is not a Catholic, regardless of the church they may attend on Sunday.

I don’t know what’s so complicated about peace either.

And I submit that those who want to stop fighting against terrorism be the first to volunteer to go see Osama Bin Laden and invite him to the peace talks! 😉

The problem arises when one side is agreeable to peace, while the other side is agreeable only to war. How do you make peace with someone who wants to kill you and will make every attempt to do so, as soon as possible? Do we just lay down and die? That’s not making peace, that’s suicide.

Agreed, I understand it is too late now, espcially since our tactics towards peace involve violence. But I don’t believe that people truly want peace, they want power. And therefor, there will never be peace.

Not only that, but if all Christians lived the life of Christ, the entire world would be Christian.

It is not a lose-lose situation, unless you consider both options to be losers.

Here is the crux of the matter, as far as I can see. If I cannot live, I have no rights that matter. The Catholic Church has been clear about this since God was young. It has never wavered on this. These people who claimed that the Church has never spoken against abortion are either idiots or liers. The president is limited in what he can do to end abortion, but he can propose measures to limit it, or make it more available.

These Catholics who claim that the Church never taught against abortion are also the same ones who hold that there are no mortal sins and that communion is not the Real Presence of Jesus. The statistics support that. Basically, they are Catholic because theya re used to the title or they are afraid to walk out the door, lest they loose status in their communities.
