Can a 'traditional' Catholic prefer the OF?

.

I just don’t enjoy the idea of defining one’s faith by the form of Mass being attended as long as it is licit.
I don’t think it only refers to the form. I think those who define themselves as traditional do tend to prefer the EF along with pre-Vatican practices like the 3 hour fast, the Divine Office, as opposed to the Liturgy of the Hours, communion on the tongue while kneeling, veiling, etc.

I know this does not apply to everyone, but in my limited experience all those things tend to go hand in hand.

I was the original poster of Pope Benedict XV’s (not the XVI’s, BTW) instruction. I posted it because it’s “traditional” to pay attention to and obey a papal instruction. That some “traditional” people refuse to do so is, IMHO, ironic. We’re Catholics if we submit in faith and intellect to all that the Church teaches. That’s all that matters. Preference for one missal over the other (that which clothes the Holy Sacrifice, which remains the same regardless of which authorized missal is used) is irrelevant.

Well, the thread is about the form of the Mass as that was the question of the OP. And actually, those things quite often do not go hand in hand. We have many women who veil in our parish and many who take communion on the tongue and all of it happens inside of the OF even though there are EF within reasonable driving distances.

Yes, they don’t always go hand in hand, but would you not agree you would probably see all those things in an EF, whereas if you walk into any random OF, you may see some or none at all?

She’s referring to more than the mass though.
But I prefer the OF Mass. I liked Gregorian chant but I’m happy with songs in the vernacular as long as they don’t drift into heresy or feminism. I appreciate Communion in the hand. I don’t feel the need to wear a veil (but don’t have issues with those who do). I’m just happy being a Catholic and wish that everyone else was one too.

So am I a traditional Catholic? Or does a traditional Catholic have to prefer the Latin Mass, chant, veiling, Communion on the tongue, etc. I’d have no problem going back to that if the church required it, but it’s not my preference.

For the most part I agree.

Lets just drop the word already! People here can’t even ask or show simple love to the EF without being attack by others. It’s an everyday thing here. We should probably tell CAF to change the section from Traditional to Latin Mass.

I mean that it actually becomes a normal thing to have the EF in every parish and that people don’t make a fuss and consider it some kind of a political issue. Because that is how it is despite the motu proprio and the pope’s enthusiasm.

I wonder what is going on here today. This is the ‘traditional catholicism’ forum, right?
Not really. A lot of good people who had some great information have all pretty much left this forum. They pretty much got tired of the same attacks from people. I thought this forum was great because it allowed those who had a love for the EF to come together, seeing that most groups are small and really scattered accross the country.

If its about the Mass, then it should be in the L&S forum 🤷

Thank you, JKirk, for the clarification. I read it as XVI.
So, the divisive labelling has been a problem for at least 100 years!

Many parts of this encyclical read as though it could have, indeed, been written by our current Holy Father! There really is nothing new under the sun. It was written in 1914.

If all traditional means is “faithful”, then why not include questions about the mass? 😃

I don’t think most Catholics who frequent this site would classify themselves as unfaithful.

In any case, the Extraordinary form of the mass is listed as one of the topics appropriate for this forum. See sticky.

While the Mass is the Mass and wherever it is valid, I cannot appreciate it more in any particular form; but aesthetically, my favourite Mass is the OF when done as the council fathers intended: it has both hymns and gregorian chant, latin propers and/or ordinary, can be done *ad orientam *and concelebrated by many priests, and does not spare any of the ritual processions, incense, bells etc. Only the current English translation is unfortunately bland.

One of the, yes. Archangel was proposing to change the title to Latin Mass, then it becomes the only topic in this forum. Which would be a shame because there are lots of interesting things to talk about (and I don’t mean never ending SSPX threads).

I too could have written the same post as you have Claire, except that I would also add “as long as the OF Mass is REVERENT” I probably could add that I wish Gregorian Chant was also part of the music ministry 😃 but then again that’s a matter of preferance I think, not a must. I do love all the bells and smells, and pagentry of the EF Mass, and wish there was more of it at my reverent OF. We have bells, but the more of the smells and sprinkles would be nice.

I can usually close my eyes to a few things that I may not agree with, as long as I see that it’s not a Mass that worships the people/the priest/the commitees, but it’s truly worshipping our God. In other words… once in a while, there will be a “Baptist Revival” song in there, and if I find that it’s not a usual occurence, I’ll grit my teeth through it and go on. However, if they start sneaking in more and then I notice other things… I search for a new Parish. Something I had to do a few years back.

I see you’re a “conservative Catholic”. Watch those labels now! 😃

Conservative yes! In other words, definitely not liberal 😃 I’m anal retentive… gotta have labels on everything 😛 … even myself LOL!

Maybe I should relabel myself “Conservative Catholic very happy with the reverent OF Mass” :D:thumbsup:

I like this LOL
I say let’s label and make thing colorful! Don’t you just hate it when people want things to be so bland and uniform? 😃

Sounds like an honorable, dignified and proper label. :tiphat:

I’ve noticed that the usual suspects are not around. That is so sad. I wonder who really profits from censorship. This just proves what the status of the EF really is, when we take away the PC nonsence about mutual respect

I had to chuckle when you mentioned the 3 hour pre-Communion fast being “pre-Vatican 2”. You’re right, it was…from the 1950s onward. Before that it was from midnight the night before…(as the Eastern Orthodox Church still does it.)

Every Traditionalist RC I knew and know fasted from midnight, using the 3 hour fast only as an emergency measure.
