Can Catholics and Mormons work together?

As you know Annie, the lds concept of hell is quite different from the catholic. The lds believe that very few people will go to hell and certainly your husband is not one of them.

I do believe that the lds church stands alone with its hell concept. The three kingdoms of glory seems to counter most christian hell claims.

Sorry about your husband. 😦
Why Me - thank you.🙂 You are right on track!

OK - why oh why has my thread turned into such chaos? Is it impossible for people here to be nice and leave the sarcasm at the door? Why does EVERYTHING that has anything to do with a Mormon always go this way at CA? I for one have just about had enough. **All I did was try to make a sincere apology to those who might be offended and it has turned into a sarcasm laden “you Mormons are crazy” thread. **

THank you to all who have been kind and kept the original post in mind. This is where I get off:(

From 1958 Edition of Mormon Doctrine by Bruce R. McConkie: “Suicides. See Murderers. Suicide is murder, pure and simple, and murderers are damned. There is no more justification for self-murder than for the wilful destruction of another. There is a common and supposedly compassionate tendency on the part of many to reason that all who commit suicide must be mentally unbalanced and that therefore they are not accountable for their crimes……But the great probability is that nearly all self-murderers–though they may be depressed an mentally ill–do in fact know right from wrong, the same as most killers do. No murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.”
That is not a doctrine of the Church. See this article by Elder Ballard:

While I was researching this subject, I came across the following article, which is a great advice for those who are depressed, or otherwise contemplating suicide:

Good Morning Tommy 🙂 I think your intentions were quite honorable, but the sad fact is that most . . . of the Catholics here will get very upset, angry and sometimes downright rude . . . when you say ANYTHING good about Mormons.
That is the mistake that you keep making Annie. These people are not “Catholics”. Genuine Catholics are pretty decent folk. They don’t act in this way. These folks are Mormon-apoststes-turned-false-Catholic. They no more believe in Catholicism than they beleive in Mormonism. They have merely chosem Catholicism as platform from which to attack Mormonism. They are as big a disgrace to the Catholic Church as they are (or have been) in the LDS Church.

zerinus

so if a catholic converts to mormonism and explains to mormons who are interested in becoming catholic why that is wrong are they catholic apostates turned false mormon?

that’s ridiculous and zerinus doesn’t get to decide who is or isn’t an apostate or a catholic. to answer the OP,

Of course they CAN. the question is SHOULD they? despite any placating statements to the contrary, official mormon doctrine contained in their scriptures is that the catholic church is one of the many products of the great apostasy and that it contains absolutely no sacramental grace whatsoever. Further, LDS doctrine claims the creeds to be ABOMINATIONS in the sight of God. that is somewhat problematic in that cooperation cold be seen as giving tacit approval to that teaching. on the other side, mormons actively seek out ecumenical opportunities as potentially providing missionary referrals. the same principle results in LDS missionaries attending other churches worship services. the curious are sought out and those who seem receptive are pursued as converts.

both churches have doctrines that are mutually exclusive. they both can’t be right and there is no middle ground.

with that in mind there is still the possibility that in limited situations, properly catechized individual catholics can work with individual LDS and even LDS organizations to include the LDS church itself for the areas where there are mutual interests.

RC_Matt, while I appreciate your sympathy for me, I do not appreciate the above response to a post for me. The comments by Why Me were appropriate and comforting.

Annie
Sorry Annie, there was absolutely no intent to offend you. That particular individual never fails to raise my hackles; I don’t take kindly to subterfuge on any level.

Do you think it’s possible for Mormons and Catholics to allow one another to choose the one true way for themselves?

I’ve always been pretty partial to the idea that my faith can be the one true faith for me, while at the same time it wouldn’t be the one true faith for anyone else.

Such an idea is inimical to honest practice of both faiths. If that’s what you believe, you are better off joining the Unitarian Universalists.

I have NO ulterior motives, I do NOT try to “convert” others (that is up to God and God alone)
I do. Religion by its very nature requires conversion. When two people of different faiths discuss religion, they do so from the perspective that each has the correct religion, and that the other would be better off converting to his or her religion. That is in the nature of beast. That is what a religious discussion by nature tries to achieve. You cannot discuss religion with someone of another faith without attempting to convert them. That is as much true of a Catholic as it is of a Mormon. If you are not trying to convert others, you should be. Otherwise you shouldn’t be discussing religion with them at all. To discuss religion with someone of another faith, means trying to convert them.
Why don’t YOU stop comparing ALL Mormons to the ones you have had bad experiences with?
She hasn’t had any “bad experiences with Mormons”. She is an apostate. Her problem is with Mormonism, not with “a few Mormons”.
The OP had a good point; why can’t we ALL break down the barriers that keep us from helping others and leave the “salvation” up to God. I trust that God is in control; do you?
There are no “barriers” between Catholics and Mormons. They get along just fine. The folks you are dealing with here are not “Catholics”. They are Mormon apostates. They are apostate-Mormons-turned-false-Catholic. They have an eternal enmity with Mormonism, and want to attack and destroy it by all means possible. “Compromise” is not acceptable. “Building bridges” is not an objective. “Removing barriers” is not the done thing. Destruction of Mormonism is the only possible objective with them. Well, there is only one way to deal with that, and that is to meet them head on, attack them and destroy them. If you don’t have the stomach to do that, you get out of their way. You don’t debate with them. If you try to play “softly softly” with them, they will bring you to grief.

You can’t be “nice” to the devil. That is not the kind of treatment that he appreciates. You hit him hard, knock him flat, and give him a hole in the head. That is what he is asks for, and that is what he deserves. If you don’t have the wherewithal to do that, then you get out of his way. You don’t mess with the devil.

Z - IF (and I say if - because I know you are not) you were the only Mormon I ever met, I would defineately NEVER have joined the LDS church. THankfully there are kind Christ-like Mormons just as there are kind Christlike Catholics etc. Now it is real clear why most Catholics here are not having any interest in the LDS Church…

Annie

Sure, in theory Mormons and Catholics can work together. However, few Mormons, in my experience, have respect for the faith of a Catholic. Therefore, there are massive trust issues. I now regard trust issues as something separate from “prejudice”. Individually, I cannot work with Mormons because of the massive abuse I have suffered from them.
I do not believe this. This is falsehood. Mormons do not “abuse” people. If you had accused an individual Mormon of abusing you, that could be possible. But you are not. You are accusing “Mormons” of abusing you. That is falsehood. “Mormons” do not.

That is OK with me. I am not offended by your post. Your posts reveal that you are a half-hearted Mormon; just as you are (or have been) a half-hearted Catholic. But you have a good heart. Some day you will understand. 🙂

Oh Jerusha - I am so sorry for what you have been through:hug1: . I wish that I could “tell my fellow Mormons” (as you put it) that such behavior is not the way of Christ. . . .
You are sorry for nothing. If you are a Mormon, you will know that “Mormons” do not abuse people. What he is saying is not true.

Whoa dude, that’s some pretty rough stuff; you sound just like L. Ron Hubbard. Don’t you think that maybe you’re over reacting, like maybe just a little? Once in awhile you come across as a reasonable human being, even show some humor and make a good point or two, then you totally blow your credibility with that kind of stuff. I guess whatever rocks your boat is cool, but it seems kind of self-depreciating to me and it doesn’t reflect well on your church.

thus you see the contradictions. Z will tell you that first that there is no muddle ground and you SHOULD be trying to win folks to your side. then he tells you that those who oppose him are wrong for doing so. Mormons aren’t interested in compromise nor are they into building bridges or removing barriers unless it leads to converts. I have no problem with this as long as we are all open and honest about it and don’t apply a double standard.

I think mormonism is a false religion that has been led by false prophets and that it seeks to lure people away from the true faith. mormons believe that all other churches are the result of apostasy and that all those who profess the creeds are corrupt as it is an abomination in the sight of God.

the sides are clearly drawn. those who seek to go lone wolf and be a cafeteria _____ (fill in the blank) or make up their own religion are in my opinion ignoring Gods express commands for selfish pride. those afraid or unwilling to stand for something might consider Jesus words regarding the lukewarm.

if you want to be a mormon then go to their sites and look into doing it. if you want to be catholic then come on in and get thee to an RCIA class. if you are catholic and curious about mormons then here is a safe place to answer your questions. if you are mormon and curious about the catholic church then here is a place where you will be encouraged to learn more about it. we don’t aggressively proselytize nor we will send missionaries to your door but we will recommend RCIA .

Someone who just barely converted to Catholicism (within the last two months - LOL!) has no business telling me what I should or shouldn’t do.

Some of us have principles and we don’t chase from one myth to the next in a lame attempt to fill whatever hole has been knocked out of our empty psyches.

I know for a fact that every time I need a pair or four of extra hands when do corporal works of mercy, the mormons and hindus are always there. I think God thinks it funny how He always sends me Mormon elders to deliver the food baskets for the needy or the hindu women I join to put together shoe boxes of goodies for the homeless.

Do not dare to say that you know what I do or do not mean. There are Mormons who abuse people, there are Catholics who abuse people, there are Baptists etc etc etc. You do not know what is true for another - you can only speak for yourself.

Half hearted Mormon and half hearted Catholic? Hmmm…Didn’t anyone ever tell you that two halves make one whole?👍
