Can Catholics be Democrats?

The reason I asked that of ‘on_the_hill’ is because I suspect he wants to create the misconception that Catholics are dictating to people who exactly to vote for. Which is not true.
😜

I was just stirring the pot.

Hi. I am in RCIA so what I don’t know could fill the ocean. Anyway, I just got torn a new a-hole in a Catholic forum when I mentioned I was democrat. I was told that since democrats support abortion, it is therefore evil and blah blah.
If this is your response to the abortion debate, I think you need to take it more seriously.
This is what it felt like when I was voting, a party with values I agreed with except abortion. Versus a candidate I felt was going to destroy the earth but supports non-abortion.
It’s important to follow your conscience but also to properly form your conscience. I find that those who take up left-wing or big government positions and tell me about it end up checking their catholicism/protestantism/skepticism at the door and get into antecodotal evidence and irrational points.
If there are any democratic Catholics on here, can you explain how you justify your position?
This question comes on here often it seems. I think you to first ask why you are even asking the question. To be frank, I don’t see conservatives or Republicans going through this.

Party affiliation doesn’t to me that much. Lots of Democrats have been voting pro-life and Republican for decades. The one problem with party affiliation is that if you are involved in party politics, you may be pressured to support a candidate who has bad policies like abortion.

What matters is principles. But you’re not going to have principle if you cannot logically defend your argument or your vote.

The Democrat party, much like the Australian Labor party today, used to be Catholic, but they are certainly not Catholic parties today
Uhm no…the Democratic Party was never ‘Catholic’. No, not even close.

You seem to have an interest in US politics. But I think some of your assessments are a little off.
I beg to differ. The Democratic party was full of Catholics up until the 1980s, when we started to turn more Republican. Labor organizers, priests, blue collar workers, union men–the Democratic party and Catholics were intertwined. At least in the industrial cities, what later became the Rust Belt, we were. I don’t know about the rest of the country.

I Googled to verify my statement. I was wrong to an extent–Catholics started to drift away from the Dems in the 1960s, but I’ll stand by my claim that it wasn’t until the 1980s or later that we really left the party.

I come from a LONG line of Irish Democrats and yes, the Democratic party was very Catholic. It was full of first and second generation Catholic working-class immigrants.

Actually neither party are for the Social Reign of Christ the King. Never have been. Because our founding fathers were Protestants and Protestantism is a mess of “denominations”, they couldn’t pick one “denomination” and declare this nation “that denomination”…we have separation of Church and State. It’s obvious though that a Christian of any stripe cannot vote democrat.

I will also add liberal in usa is the direct opposite of what it means in Australia.

I would have been very tempted to vote for someone like JFK and RFK myself from speeches I have read/heard from them.
John and Robert Kennedy were prolife. So was Ted Kennedy, at least through the 1970’s. However messy their private lives may have been, they did not dare challenge basic Christian morality publicly at that time.

Hmmm, yes. For example, US liberals are against liberty involving guns, while US conservatives are against conserving natural resources. It’s all backwards, just like which direction is up.

Does not voting for one mean you have to like the other? Or support I should say?
No, the traditional Catholic teaching does not require voting at all. The Church long predates democracy and voting. However, I personally believe that we have a moral responsibility to oppose the Culture of Death to the best of our ability.

I am actively involved in my political party in order to try to influence politics for the better. Some issues have a clear moral component. Others, like economic growth, are not so obviously moral issues. I believe that promoting job growth promotes marriage, children, and stable family life.

We cant compare State side politics with Australian politics. 😎

The Democratic platform has gone so far off the rails at this point that I would have to say no, a good Catholic or any good Christian cannot vote Democrat.

by demographic, the “most catholic” states in the US eg, MA, NJ, NY, RI, IL, CA, etc, etc are the bluest of the blue and vote lock step for pro-abortion democrat candidates

their most fervent hope is that obama could’ve had a 3rd term; i am not making this up; it is frightening

i’ll never understand it

Very Catholic? They fought a civil war to keep slavery legal, instituted Jim Crow, armed the KKK, stopped women from voting and used their union thugs to beat up people on the streets.

Jason Lewis said it best “social liberalism leads to fiscal liberalism”.

There is no such thing as a fiscal conservative.

I’m stating a historical fact that a lot of Catholics were active in the party, without a doubt.

I’m not examining what the party did in view of Catholic teaching, although I doubt the Catholic wing of it supported the Klan (Protestant wing of it did) and the Republicans were no slouches about Klan membership either. Furthermore plenty of union members were getting beaten up by management’s thugs for a good long time. One could likely name other unChristian things the Dems did like massive graft and corruption in certain cities, however the Republicans had President Harding and Teapot Dome, and later Watergate.

As far as I’m concerned, political parties generally do a lot of questionable things as a party, and this applies to all parties. Individuals within the party may be honest or above average.

True, but that’s not at all how I would describe it in the days of JFK and RFK. Unfortunately they have gone right of the rails in this day and age like back in the era your talking about, and I guess there are probably a few Catholics asleep at the wheel who have not abandoned ship yet, at least I hope that is their reason.

God Bless You

This is my thinking - supporting a party that poo poos global warming and
denies access to health care for the poor is inevitably going to cause more
deaths than any abortions ever would. So voting for Republican is just as
morally reprehensible as voting Democrat. I know what I just said is going
to produce a s-storm of ranting, but that is my opinion. And thanks for
sharing yours.
