Can Catholics be Democrats?

So voting for Republican is just as

morally reprehensible as voting Democrat.
Not even close. If there was a head in hands emoji, id use it.

Every time I hear a Catholic use such fallacious arguments, it’s not too long before they are actively supporting heresy with things like same sex marriage and euthanasia and it’s not too long until they let the cat out of the bag and say that they never really believed in the sanctity of life in the womb in the first place. Such a shame.

“For the sake of His sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.”

Please watch the following Homily, that’s my last ditch effort, if you still feel the same, then like it says in the Gospels, I’ll shake the dust off my feet and move on. You’re the one who will have to answer to God for it.

I don’t agree that it’s reprehensible to vote for either party. I do agree that it’s more complicated than blanket positions that voting for one or the other is always wrong.

Very Catholic? They fought a civil war to keep slavery legal, instituted Jim Crow, armed the KKK, stopped women from voting and used their union thugs to beat up people on the streets.
Such strong generalizations.
My Catholic Democrat ‘ancestors’ clashed with the Klan over building a Catholic church.

I wonder if the Catholic Democrat effort to stop women from voting (which I’ve never seen before this) was related to the Catholic doctrine that men are heads of the household?

As for union thugs, let’s not forget who hired the Pinkertons as strikebreakers, and the wonderful contributions to street violence that were sponsored and financed by great men like Carnegie, Frick, coal barons, and their ilk.

This is my thinking - supporting a party that poo poos global warming and
Global warming is a hoax spread by globalists, socialists, and left wing media. 😉
denies access to health care for the poor
Sure, it’ll be hard for people for some years, but in the long run, their sacrifices will be worth it because eventually the market will render less expensive health care. We’ll lose 10, 20 million people, tops. 😉

Neither party is without blood on their hands, so to speak.

Pray about it, look at each CANDIDATE (not party) and vote based on your conscious and who would serve their constituents best in that elected position.

Don’t let anyone, right or left, bully you into voting for one party or make you feel guilty for doing so.

Global warming
You mean ‘Climate Change’? Yea, all of their predications have been a big joke, so now it’s ‘climate change’ that way they can point to anything and call it ‘proof’.

All of these same people I end up seeing actively supporting such things as euthanasia, abortion and same sex marriage, after all, if the Climate and the Earth is now their god to which one weighs all things, then it’s only logical to reduce the population in whatever evil ways out of some imagined ‘greater good’.

“For the sake of His sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.”

Maybe its fallacious to you, but not to me. And those are the facts.

Doesn’t anyone out there think voting third-party is a good choice?

I know the usual argument is that if you don’t vote for one of the two major parties, you are throwing your vote away. That is consequentialist thinking, which is morally incorrect for various reasons which I can enumerate if anyone is interested.

When you restrict your vote to the two major parties, you are settling for the lesser of two evils, which is still evil. When there is an alternative party which stands up and speaks out for good, you should support it.

you are courageous to jump back into the fray.
With all due respect, I have never referred to anyone here as ‘a-holes’ and I don’t mind if you intend it for me, what I do mind, is when people support things like abortion, euthanasia and same sex marriage and claim allegiance to the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.

God Bless

Thank you for reading.

I didn’t name names, and there are so many, why do you continue to think it’s all about you?

Is your “slap them in the face with the truth” approach likely to actually save any babies? When an RCIA candidate comes here with an innocent question, we want to build faith and correct errors, sure, and I think charity will work better. The charity I have in mind is respectful and leads the other patiently, step-by-step, toward a better understanding.

They certainly supported mistresses, pre maritial and extra marital sex.

Not to mention that the Elephants support the loopholes that allow abortion to be performed with as much gusto as their adherents claim the Donkeys have.

I voted third party in the last presidential election and heard all the “throwing away your vote” nonsense.

@victorygirl Girl, you have more courage than I think I have ever had – to bring your question here, to embrace a growing faith inside yourself and pursue the God Who is calling out to you. God’s abundant blessings be on you and in your life!

There is so much chatter on CAF, and so many people who will tell you that if you don’t agree with their well-reasoned and insightful opinion that you are failing as a Catholic.

You have clearly seen that in this thread.

Regarding your question, I am no longer a registered Democrat, but I was for a long time. I got sick of both parties and went independent, then registered as a Republican so I could vote in the primaries.

I have NO LOVE AT ALL for either of the two parties – or any other for that matter.

Vote your conscience. And pray for those who dangerously judge the souls of others. Keep your eyes fixed on Christ and let Him gently lead and form you.

And let the rest be as water off a duck’s back.

I am a convert
Before becoming Catholic I was a registered Democrat
After becoming Catholic, I’ve kept that registration, NOT because I support the party platform as it currently stands, but, so that I can vote for Democratic candidates that are closer in-line with the Catholic church’s position - wolf in sheep’s clothing “so to speak.” Where I live, you cannot vote in the primary unless you are registered as Either Democrat or Republican. Registered Independents only receive a ballot with local and state legislative actions.
IF no-one in the Democratic party fights “the good fight” by voting for candidates and positions more in-line with the Church’s positions then the party will continue the spiral into the extreme-left, socialist, communist morass that it has fallen into over the past decade.
For the final vote, I typically vote split ticket, voting for the candidate that most closely matches Catholic positions.
