Now, the teachings of the Catholic Church on marriage do not support the idea of a man being controlling/superior, etc. so odds are the closer this man is to practicing the teachings of the Church on marriage the better. If all marriages followed what the Church teaches on marriage perfectly, there would be nothing but marital bliss in all marriages.
I know that my marriage personally would be a lot worse off if we hadn’t learned about what the Church teaches on marriage. I had always been very calculative growing up. I made sure that if I gave an inch, everyone else had to give at least an inch too, if not I would feel taken advantage of or something. That kind of thing. I remember reading how in marriage, one shouldn’t try to measure everything 50% 50%, that one should give oneself 100% to each other, 110%. That has helped me so much. I know we would be constantly fighting if I tried to keep everything perfectly even, yet instead I enjoy giving myself 110% to my husband without worrying about him taking advantage, doing things because I love him. He does the same, and it melts me and makes me feel so loved when he does things for me too, without measuring or calculating. If he didn’t believe that he had to give me 100% also, I’m sure it would be more difficult. Now, if I ever feel overwhelmed, I just tell him, and he is willing to do what he can for me. Same goes the other way. It makes things so much easier. Some people may get to this conclusion on their own, but having the Church to give us guidance is like having a map or a compas guiding you, instead of just hopefully finding the way on your own. This is one of the reasons I only wanted to marry a Catholic. I knew that disagreements would come, but if we both recognized and accepted the teachings of the Church as the Truth, it would be (and has been) that much easier. Now, we both have our faults,

o I have plenty for both of us), but we deal with it and work on helping each other (and he is one of the most patient men I have ever met, which was a perfect match for me.)
