Hi all, I get scared really easily, but whenever I get scared of some type of demon trying to hurt/kill me, I tell myself they can’t. Is this true? Can they only hurt individuals spiritually?
Thank you,
Gregory

God is the author of life and death. We live and die as God wills it.
Demons cannot harm you physically. Of course the case is different if you are

Unless you are Padre Pio or a great saint who is already experiencing apparitions and stigmata and bi locution and all the other things Padre Pio experienced.

Please talk to your priest about this.

Sadly, there are such things as evil spirits and non-human entities. Typically, you will be left alone by them unless you call upon them (especially to do work for you). They feed on negative energy, so the more negative your life becomes, the more “food” they have to devour. It’s important to call upon God and the angels (or the saints if you like) to protect you… and do it frequently! If objects are being thrown around the room by an invisible force, then call the professionals. “Demons” that haunt us most are the ones in our heads, the figurative demons. When we fail to learn lessons and do the right thing, that becomes a “demon” that haunts us. When we put ourselves and selfish interests above others or hurt people because we feel empty or unlovable, such actions and feelings are certainly dangerous “demons.” Speaking from the perspective of parapsychology, yes, it is possible for an evil spirit or non-human demon to cause serious bodily harm that can lead to death. Google “The Bell Witch” for starters and “Anneliese Michel” to see some notable cases. Don’t consider this the final word on the subject, as I am sure others here will want to correct me and give you the official version.

This is actually inaccurate. Demons can harm people physically. What demons cannot do is force a person to commit sin. They can tempt us, but they cannot force us to commit mortal sin.
I really do not think that type of answer is helpful to this person. We all know of the stories of St Padre Pio, but He also saw good angels and Mary and Jesus. God would never allow a demon to seriously physical harm or kill him. He functioned during the day and did not sustain debilitating injuries. He had stigmata.

Padre Pio was regularly attacked physically by demonic forces. The priest described the suffering in a letter to a brother, who was his confidant, “These devils don’t stop striking me, even making me fall down from the bed. They even tear off my shirt to beat me! But now they do not frighten me anymore. Jesus loves me, He often lifts me and places me back on the bed.” Padre Pio testified that if a person is close to God, he has nothing to fear from the devil.

Crucial to have that faith in Jesus who saves. 🙂 Praise God

Padre Pio was regularly attacked physically by demonic forces. He said so in a letter to his close friend.

“Demons cannot harm you physically”

I would think this is a general statement. In other words it would apply to Padre Pio.

Yes you are correct, I should edit that to say Unless you are Padre Pio or a great saint who is already experiencing apparitions and stigmata and bi locution and all the other things Padre Pio experienced.

Even satan did not physically harm Jesus and pretty much knew who Jesus was, the Son of God.

My point is it is not helpful telling this person that yes demons harm and kill us normal people. This person is already pretty scared and anything we could say apart from

TAKE THIS TO YOUR PRIEST

Can make his fear and anxiety so much worse.

My uncle was a priest in Michigan, and he knew one of the guys who worked on the original case that the movie “Exorcist” was based on (it was actually a possessed boy). He admitted to me that he was quite freaked out and kept the lights on for a couple of nights after receiving official classes on demons. So, basically, priests know a lot, but they get scared too, just like everyone else.

The exorcists who are on you tube tell us how to guard against opening the door and to stay close to God. God teaches us the only fear we should have is that of God Himself.
We should not fear anything else including the diabolical.

In the book of Tobit, the demon Asmodeus murders a number of men outright until God sends the angel Raphael to stop him.

Yes, demons can kill you. However, it is exceptionally rare that this happens. The daily Mass readings for Monday, February 24, 2020 were about a demonically possessed boy. The demons would often throw the boy into fire and water to try and kill him. Here is the reading I am talking about:

Mark 9:14-29 NAB When they came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and scribes arguing with them. (15) Immediately on seeing him, the whole crowd was utterly amazed. They ran up to him and greeted him. (16) He asked them, What are you arguing about with them? (17) Someone from the crowd answered him, Teacher, I have brought to you my son possessed by a mute spirit. (18) Wherever it seizes him, it throws him down; he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable to do so. (19) He said to them in reply, O faithless generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I endure you? Bring him to me. (20) They brought the boy to him. And when he saw him, the spirit immediately threw the boy into convulsions. As he fell to the ground, he began to roll around and foam at the mouth. (21) Then he questioned his father, How long has this been happening to him? He replied, Since childhood. (22) It has often thrown him into fire and into water to kill him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us. (23) Jesus said to him, ‘If you can!’ Everything is possible to one who has faith. (24) Then the boy’s father cried out, I do believe, help my unbelief! (25) Jesus, on seeing a crowd rapidly gathering, rebuked the unclean spirit and said to it, Mute and deaf spirit, I command you: come out of him and never enter him again! (26) Shouting and throwing the boy into convulsions, it came out. He became like a corpse, which caused many to say, He is dead! (27) But Jesus took him by the hand, raised him, and he stood up. (28) When he entered the house, his disciples asked him in private, Why could we not drive it out? (29) He said to them, This kind can only come out through prayer.

Anyway, I would not be worried about this happening to you. If you are ever afraid, call upon the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints. They can help you. And of course you can also call upon our Lord and obviously He can help you too. 🙂

I really think for somebody who is struggling with a phobia that it’s best to just say that demons cannot physically hurt you.

Examples of certain people that dealt with corporal demonic attacks were very extraordinary scenarios.

Yes, they can kill us. Haven’t you read the story of Job in the Bible? God, who is more powerful than Satan, wouldn’t let him kill Job, but he let Satan give Job painful soars and boils, among other things. Demons can cause physical harm. Pray the St. Micheal Prayer and talk to your priest. I hope this helps!!! I’ll pray for you!!! 🙂

Yes. As mentioned; In Tobit Sarah’s first seven husbands were killed by a demon and Job’s servants and children were killed by Satan.
