Can I Be Friends With A White Witch?

I had friends that I dabbled in stuff with - a lot of it was because I was in high school and we were stupid. Eventually when I finally returned to being a real practicing Christian I also told them that I could no longer do those things - even if we were not really being serious about it in the first place. They respected me for it - and in fact - they began to question their own actions - they too eventually stopped it.

So I kind of know where you are coming from. I would say - go for it - be honest with your friend about it.

I also agree with all of those who have said - there is no such thing as white witchcraft. That is such an oxymoron when you think about it. It is like saying there is a healthy poison. If your talking with her about this does not go well - you may have to be honest and tell her that her being a witch may cost her the friendship. I’ll say a prayer for you.

Of course. In your version of Christianity, we can’t really be friends with people. We can only pretend to be so we can manipulate them into “getting saved.” Right?

Not true. She has been friends with this woman for a while before finding out that she was a witch.

No. When I see evil and folly I will call it what it is. I expect others to do the same to me when I fall into sin and folly, as I do frequently.

I am not judging the state of people’s souls–or if I implied such a thing I apologize. I am judging the kind of “Christianity” expressed in these posts–a Christianity characterized by fear and failing to show any trace of faith, hope, or charity. Of course it is highly likely that these posts are showing the worst aspects of the posters and are not typical. I would like to think that this is true many of my posts on this forum, which have often violated the law of charity. Perhaps when I have cooled down, I’ll think this about my posts on this thread as well! But if there is one thing worth getting angry about, it’s this kind of fear-mongering pseudo-piety that tells us that we have to be afraid of non-Christians instead of showing them the love of Christ.

The anger on your posts broders on hysteria. As for me, knowing my faith, I would never encourage anyone to be friends with someone who is involved in withchcraft. Friendship with a witch? Ah noooooooooooo. In case you’ve forgotten, witchcraft is sin and folly. Is that better?

But being friends with a sinner is not a sin. Otherwise I would have no friends because we, and that means everyone on these forums as well, are sinners.

Weren’t they sinners? Isn’t that what we are talking about, friendship with those we deem sinful? Tactful, or not it’s basic.

from the Catechism:2117 All practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one’s service and have a supernatural power over others - even if this were for the sake of restoring their health - are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion. These practices are even more to be condemned when accompanied by the intention of harming someone, or when they have recourse to the intervention of demons. Wearing charms is also reprehensible. Spiritism often implies divination or magical practices; the Church for her part warns the faithful against it. Recourse to so-called traditional cures does not justify either the invocation of evil powers or the exploitation of another’s credulity. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~If any Catholic believes he/she can be FRIENDS with a person involved with the occult then I have to ask, do you any idea of what consitutes a near occasion of sin? The world is filled with people you can befriend, and yes all of us are sinners. HOWEVER, a man or woman who has pledged interest to and in evil MUST be avoided. (Look it up.)

No. They don’t have to be avoided. You are writing them off and noone, unitl they die, is beyond redemption. I will befriend anyone I choose and if you disagree so be it. It is not a sin or even the near occasion of sin.

The disciples didn’t remain sinners, though. Are you under the impression that Matthew continued to collect taxes for the occupational government, or that Simon Zealote continued to ambush and kill people, after meeting Jesus and beginning to follow Him?

Jesus said that the tax collectors and the prostitutes were going into Heaven ahead of the Pharisees - but it was not because they were remaining in their sins, but rather, because they had become even more perfect than the Pharisees, by the help of Jesus.

Nope that’s not what I am saying at all. What I am saying is, if we are always among those who believe, act and think as we do, how does God’s message proliferate? 😉

Actually they were still sinners as we are today even after Jesus resurrection. They may not have committed the same sins but to say they suddenly became perfect beings would be laughable.

Are you changing your tune then? One’s FRIENDS are quite different from those who one might meet-and-greet. The question involved FRIENDSHIP. (Your implication was that Jesus was FRIENDS with people who were actively devoted to sin. HUH?)

Not really - after all, that’s exactly what Jesus came for.

They were in His actual presence, and they were repenting of their sins. If you can’t become perfect under those conditions, then when can you?

Yes mam. If friendship and love and love is friendship, I think Jesus would hang in there.🙂

They were still sinners. We all are. Even the Pope.

oops. Friendship is love and love is friendship is what I meant to type. My digits stumbled.

Catherina, because you sin and please don’t tell me you don’t, we all do, do you love the sin, or do you regret it? I think Jesus friends who tried to follow him still sinned, but regretted it.😉
