Can I marry my 16 year old girlfriend?

OK, I see your point - but this type of thread really belongs more on the Moral Reasoning or one of those forums if you want to pontificate on a topic. You are lucky no one back traced you and tried to call the police.

Yes, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for this thread to go unchecked as long as it did, but I was asking a hypothetical question to gauge reaction to this type of situation. I was thinking about the Holy Family today, how young Mary was, and I was curious how people might react to a similar situation today. I didn’t want to preface it by saying it was hypothetical since I figured that would alter the reaction and answers. I hope you all will forgive me for deceiving you! My intent was innocent, honestly, and I expected to guide the conversation more than I did so that no one would say anything sinful or uncharitable which they would regret.

I don’t really have a girlfriend at all. I am single, and wouldn’t think of dating a 16 year old.

Again, my most sincere apologies!
I think that posting a fake scenario is rude! There were many well meaning good hearted people who took their time to try and help.

I’m 28. Would it be immoral for me to marry my 16 year old girlfriend?
I have met some incredibly mature and smart 16 year olds in my life. But not one that would ready for marriage. I don’t think at 16 its possible to understand what you are getting into.

Yes it would be immoral and illegal. I would suggest waiting 4 years, at least, if you love her. You will have plenty of time to work on the spiritual side of your relationship over that time to see if this is still the person for you. The physical relationship can wait.

teehee, I love how people are still replying to this thread. I for one, read the whole thing first! 😛

i do not think it is so clear. where is a lie. where it is not.

In the US, a 16 year old is still a child usually. It is very rare for a teen to gain the maturity needed for marriage by 16. Having said that, there are a very few cases I have heard of where a 16 year old has married and had the necessary maturity and familial support, and it has worked out - although all with a young man of similar age. In this culture, I think it would generally be wiser and far less scandalous for an older man to wait until his prospective bride reaches the age of 18. Similarly, a 28 year old with a 16 year old seems pretty creepy - but I can see how it could happen. I attended college when I was 16 years old, and as I was one of the best students in the school taking the most advanced classes this small community college offered, it wasn’t unusual for me to be mistaken for a 20-year-old or older (I was occasionally invited to local 21+ drinking establishments, and people would be surprised that I wasn’t old enough to vote, much less drink). A 28-year-old interested in a woman he thought was 20 or 21 is much less creepy.

This is very different from the Mary-and-Joseph case, however. Historical records suggest that Mary was a consecrated virgin, and her “husband” was more her protector and caretaker than her lover. The Proto-Evangelium of James, which is not Biblical but is still valuable as a historical document showing the beliefs of people about Mary from around 150 AD, states that Joseph was an older, well-respected windower who had already had previously had another family (including Jesus’ ‘brothers’).

Even then, the Proto-Evangelium suggests that their relationship was somewhat unusual even near the time it happened:
But Joseph received the last rod: and 1o, a dove came forth of the rod and flew upon the bead of Joseph. And the priest said unto Joseph: Unto thee hath it fallen to take the virgin of the Lord and keep her for thyself. 2 And Joseph refused, saying: I have sons, and I am an old man, but she is a girl: lest I became a laughing-stock to the children of Israel.

This thread has been very educational but I would like to inform people that St. Bernadette Soubirous’ mother and father were 18 and 36 respectively when they got married. How many people here would feel comfortable having your 17 year old daughter dating a 35 year old man?!!!

That’s still a very different culture. It’s not the same as a 17 y/o dating a 35 y/o today.

Hi, just letting you know that I got married at age sixteen, and my marriage is perfectly fine and happy. 🙂 😃

Okay, so hubby was only ninteen when we got married, but technically, it was still illegal without parental consent. My parents had to sign their consent for my marriage to take place.

EDIT: I feel dumb now; I should’ve read the whole thread. Sorry. 😊:o

Shouldn’t you be asking her parents? The Church does not allow anyone under 20 to marry without parental or priestly consent, at least that is the case in this neck of the woods. These days, 16 is pretty young. Any 16 yr old who wants to marry is looking for escape and rescue.

My grandmother married at 15, but that was about 100 years ago, in the wild pioneer northwest of Canada, where there were no other options for young women who had long finished school (grade six) and had been out working as a domestic for several years already. She made sure her six daughters (my mother one of them) were all well educated before getting married so that they would have more options in their lives than she had.

Yup my best friend married at 17 and her hubby was 19. Her mom had to sign a consent form. They just celebrated their 20th anniversary this summer.

Disclaimer: I am an American man, upper edge of mid 20s who had a slight ‘ethnic’ upbringing. In terms of women, courtship, let’s say I look up rather than down in age terms.

I think we sometimes forget that much of the world is not the United States nor do American laws and (new) customs apply by default. Sometimes I wonder if we on occasion fall into the trap of seeing the Church in national terms rather than the universal body of Christ. The treatment some American Catholics offer to Mexican Catholics is appalling and demonstrates a Protestantized spirit of jingoism.

Anyway, back to the topic…

The fact is that, for better or for worse, our identities are dramatically shaped by modern schooling and sociological legal expectations for our particular age. It is often unfair, but that is the post-modern culture we find ourselves in. And, we have to do our best to suffer a little in an unfair situation.

Most girls aged 16 in America are simply not capable of consenting to a natural marriage. Much of this is because of the social revolutions of the 60s and 70s. We are told that traditional courtship is disgusting and a sign of something terrible, that women should be ‘independent’ and out of the house, that marriage should be long delayed, etc. At the same time, we have become an extremely protective and soft society; this impedes mental maturity.

After several decades of this, an American 16 year old girl, on average, is simply not nearly as mature as a 16 year old girl perhaps as few as 60 years ago. As a result, the reason for heightened concern about a 28 year old man apparently dating or courting a 16 year old girl is founded in prudent judgment. The chances are that the relationship would be not just terribly uneven, but systemically lopsided to the point there is little availability for a mutual situation.

I don’t mean to sound as though I am beating up on American girls; American young men are also, on average, unfortunate victims of social engineers that is terribly un-Christian and they act in base ways as a result.

We as Catholic Christians know that we must apply our faith to every facet of our lives. We cannot ‘leave religion’ out of a discussion or problem because Catholicism is our core identity. And with that in mind, I think that this entire thread brings up a number of ways we all, myself included, need to better understand this.

It is probably uncharitable and selfish to deliberately seek a wife so much younger in age and likely maturity.

It is uncharitable to presume a person doing the above is a pedophile, as many 16 year old girls are physically ‘very adult.’

Deep prayer and meditation is needed to discern if we as Americans are occupying the cultural high-ground. Why is marriage under so much attack? Why are many Catholic (and non-Catholic) men seeking wives from Latin nations?

As his holiness Pope Benedict has said, there was a dramatic break from centuries of tradition in a matter of a few short years. This upheaval in the Church came at precisely the same time secular aspects of life changed radically (e.g., women entering the workforce en mass, liberalized laws, etc.).

And, with all that said, I tend to doubt that the poster is actually courting a 16 year old.
I realise that the OP was asking a hypothetical question, so this is directed more to those on this thread who have more or less said that since most 16 year old girls appear to look physically like women, that it is not pedophilia or less wrong in some way.

When I was 15 I was sexually abused by a much older adult man. I know this means I will have an emotional response, but are my words going to be less valid because of it? I wont go into details but during the incident, the man sort of implied that what he was doing was ‘‘fun’’ and not so bad because ‘‘obviously’’ I was a physically a ‘‘woman’’. He knew I was developed because he touched me (sorry to be so graphic). There is no way that men or any human being can know that a 16 year old they are considering is physically a woman unless they have somehow implicitly examined her body/body shape. As far as i know, thinking lustful things or even considering something like this is immoral in Catholicism. My experience highlighted above was horrific despite my physical maturity. I think the same would apply to a 16 year old 200 years ago, when she would have been more mentally mature than I was.

Further, while we can say with certainty that most 16 year olds have breasts and so on, there is usually a difference in the face of a 16 year old and that of a 26 year old. The latter still looks quite young, therefore it is still at best weird for an older person to be lusting after a teenager. So again, I highly disagree that being physically capable of doing something makes it moral or acceptable to do so.

By the way I dont mean to condemn people I dont know here. We are all capable of thinking and saying the wrong things all the time. I also know that not all men or women who momentarily find a teenager attractive are potential criminals. However I am very wary of people who take the time to rationalize and/or justify lusiting after adolescents, who while not children are still a group which requires our protection.
As for those who married at 16 and remain happily so, Im genuinely happy things worked out for you. I dare say though, that you are an exception.

Maybe in this day and age. 😉 😃 A good hundred years or so ago, and I’d be the norm. Many women in my husband’s family also married young and they’re marriages have thrived. In fact, one of his relatives married at age thirteen (of course, that was a good sixty years ago, but anyway.).

Marriage requires maturity. Not everyone can handle the responsibity that comes with marriage, even those individuals in their twenties or thirties. When my husband and I fell in love, we did not feel the need to wait just because modern society thought we were “young”. He had a job and a place of his own; I was graduating early. To delay a marriage felt redundant to us.

Is our marriage perfect? Nope, not in the least. But we’re happy, and inviting God into our marriage. That’s helped a lot! 🙂

I think that’s the crux of the matter. Culture is a pretty strong glue that we overlook. And culture can rapidly change now due to communications speed and technology advances.

Hmm, not thrilled that this was a ‘hypothetical’ thread. Kind of feeling like I need a towel to get that egg off my face.

Jane - I am very, very, sorry for what you sustained and also for not being more clear in my words.

By ‘very adult’ I meant that to mean two things: not prepubescent (I think that was a big concern of some posters) **and **intellectually and morally ahead of most people that age. I was trying to type out things quickly and cut some (in retrospect, pretty important) corners. I am very, very sorry for seeming like I was being insensative. I personally know women who have been abused and it is something that truly infuriates me because it is such a betrayal and abuse of a man’s station.

The overal thing I was trying to get across was that there -can- be that one in a million pairing where there is such an age gap - but waiting a few years is a necessary road to trod given modern circumstances. Perhaps I could have just typed out this paragraph the first time…😦

Thanks for the kind words and dont worry about it. I was not replying to you personally as much as to the general tone of the thread. Also i was ranting about what I feel is the sexualisation of teenagers in today’s society-it is so rampant that it is easy sometimes to think they are older than they are.
Im sure there is that one in a million 16 year old out there mature enough for marriage and i dont want to stand in anyone’s way or true love. However i do think true love can wait about 5 years. Even the most mature 16 year old will lack the life experience a 21 year old of the same level has. Marrying at 21 leaves plenty of time for the couple to spend together.
I guess my experince has turned me off older men to such an extent that even at my age the thought makes me sick. So thinking about a 16 year old in the situation, it makes it worse.

God bless

I should further clarify that in all this I am assuming absolutely no coercion, intimidation, or other pressure that makes the situation intrinsically unfair.

About that one in a million waiting… Yes, absolutely. And I think this applies to other circumstances. How many times do we ‘know we found the one’ and want to throw all caution to the wind and do something bold! Maybe a little patience is needed to actively demonstrate intentions at the moment.

It would be immoral to engage in sexual activity with her I guess, and illegal, but it’s not really immoral to feel an attraction towards her. People here talking about jail time and it being sick are just retards.

It would be wise however to not do anything until she’s 18, you obviously have to understand that at the age of 16, her mentality, wants and needs are completely different to a woman that would be your age and it would change.

Name calling will not help whatever argument you are trying to make. Us ‘‘retards’’ are just looking out for the welfare of young people. It is ridiculous to pretend that nothing bad happens when an older person first feels an attraction to an impresionable teenager.
