If Trump upholds the law, he will get painted as a meanie by the MSM. If he goes easy and let’s them all in or even the majority, his base will get upset. Either way, it’s tough.

Either way, it’s tough.
True, I wouldn’t underestimate our President. The Democrats thought they had sunk his battleship in October 2016 with the Access Hollywood tapes- but he was able to find a way to fight back.

I don’t have a crystal ball on this, but my gut feeling is the it will be ok.

Economic migrants from the Middle East and Africa are spilling into Europe
First off, they aren’t ‘spilling’ anywhere.

Second, ‘they’ are persons fleeing poverty, war and famine.

Thirdly, I’m European and every country in Europe holds a debt to the Africans for centuries of exploiting them economically, humanly, and in almost any way you might care to imagine.

Forth, plenty of European countries would have their economies collapse as it is without foreign migrant manpower, so it’s sheer hypocrisy to say migrants are taking advantage of Europeans when in fact it’s the other way around because when migrants arrive everything from social security to the legalization process is set up to explore their labor and if possible trick them out of their rights and expel them once a suitable period of using them has elapsed.

And I speak for the European case, feel free to adapt whatever may apply to your own country.

Europe is a large, diverse continent.

But some nations over there are blocking the flow of migrants into their realms- Hungary and Poland among others - and aren’t collapsing at all.

The two nations you mentioned owe they current development to massive injections of capital from their more developed neighbors and so too the Shengan accords that allowed their citizens to immigrate to wealthier countries.

The Hungarians have been criticized for political discourse bordering xenophobia and the Polish must have been one of the most massacred nations of the XX century precisely by their larger neighbors.

Augustinian:
You are making the assumption that these individuals in the caravan are truly refugees- a lot of people just don’t buy it.
Surely you can read better than that. Do you understand the word “if?” My first line is that I was glad there were more people to process them. I hold hope that this is an honest process, unlike some of the recent shenanigans of the Justice Department.

I made no assumptions, any more than you did when you “guessed” that they do not qualify for refugee or asylum status.

And for the record, I am a Christian, not a Marxist.
Everyone makes assumptions. There are even assumptions made by you in characterizing yourself as Christian and not Marxist.

I am certainly not attempting to say you are being intentionally deceptive, but merely that the fundamental principles behind Christian thinking on this issue and Marxist thinking on it have become very much muddled by the Enlightenment and by modern western political presumptions derived from Hobbes, Locke and Rawls.

Perhaps this will help unmuddle things just a bit, at least for some.

He should uphold the law and stop the caravan at the border. The media will bash him no matter what.

Americans know something is off about this caravan, and I haven’t heard much from the left in terms of total support for the caravan.

So does this mean that my parish and the others in my city will be getting involved in a way other than praying?

I hope so. I refuse to say a prayer that I don’t mean.

What I’m afraid of is that someone (probably not Pres. Trump’s people) will use violence to stop the caravan, and CLAIM that it was because of Pres. Trump. The world, especially the U.S., will be outraged and call for the immediate impeachment and arrest of the President for crimes against humanity.

I think the U.S. needs to be very, very watchful that this doesn’t happen, not only for the sake of our country and our President, but also, obviously, for the sake of the poor people who are being used to further a radical agenda that has the goal of destroying the United States Constitution.

I have no idea what you or your parish or city will do to help those people. It’s an individual response all of us must make. For myself, removing any partisan leaning I begin first by seeing them as persons, all individual with needs, desires, rights, and problems. Similar to those of any other person that belongs to the human race and are made in the Image and Likeness of God.
I pray you and “your” parish do something, but I only speak for myself and my individual actions with an awareness it affects my community.
God Speed

I know that it’s pointless to appease an unappeasable media, but I still can’t help but fear he’ll do the dumb thing and go easy on these people.

Your fear is well founded based upon the responses of other politicians to similar provocations.

But Donald J Trump understands what’s going on, and I’m sure he has a strategy to deal with this effectively.

But if the bishops (USCCB) have published this prayer, then they must have a nation-wide Catholic parish response in mind.

I absolutely agree with you that we need to keep in mind that everyone in this caravan is an individual human being designed by God, and of infinite worth to God, as His Son Jesus Christ died to redeem them.

And for this reason, simply saying a prayer and wagging our fingers at our President is not an adequate response. It’s hypocrisy.

But it’s also ludicrous to expect individuals like me and my husband (who both work and both have some difficulties with mobility) to dive in and start saving lives. A parish, with hundreds and perhaps thousands (like our parish) of people with many resources and talents CAN help individuals.

I think you may have a point here. Just read that Trump is now threatening to cut off foreign to the countries where these migrants originated from.

I don’t quite care about wagging a finger at the President, this is bigger than him alone and ALL persons regardless of nation should do “more than pray”, faith without works is meaningless. Individuals can give time or money to refugee/immigrant centers within their communities. Even a dollar in adjunct with hundreds of others giving the same can amount to a substantial sum. I am sure even Catholic Charities is accepting assistance at this time. You’re correct that action speaks louder than words. I am sure food will be necessary.

We are pathetic. We spread cheese all over the house and then complain when the mice show up to eat it.

America may not be perfect, but America is GREAT, the best country in the world.
