You dont find many people comfortable channeling Jesus-especially when Jesus presented as just another Democrat Party hack. Democrats have twisted the Churches teaching on the Preferential option for the poor and vulnerable into a prefernetial option for big govenment and high taxes.
And was is you who once said Government should only have to provide for a powerful Military?
A rather silly statement in my opinion. Don’t know how long it is going take to pay off all the borrowed money from China and India for the past 10 years of war and to think the neocons are still talking up bomb, bomb, bomb, it is insane.
Our Country’s infrastructure is broken will your kind of corporate philosophy pitch in and take care of it.
There has been many blunders made by both politicals in the past century, you can’t just can’t dump the fault on one , the Dems.
Peace, Carlan

So people who are for abortions will vote for one party and the people who are against abortions will vote for the other.

So how is this current two-party, power-hungry system going to change hearts?

No.

I am tired of watching children die while Catholic democrats pontificate about changing hearts while at the same time supporting those who have vowed to keep abortion legal.

Abortion will remain legal in this country until Catholic Democrats come to love the unborn more than than they hate the GOP.

Thank you for emphazing Matt, so many posting in this kind of forum miss that point ,and I don’t understand them since this is a Catholic Christiam forum and it was never that way with people in my day, we cared about social justice it was a Catholic thing among the people. It is a different time tho’, I understand.that . Most today have never experienced personally the time of the great depression of the 30’s. As aways peace to all, Carlan
Carlan, well you go back further than I do so if you don’t understand them then I surely can’t. I wasn’t around during the 1930s but my mother and uncles and aunts shared stories with me. But even during my lifetime I can remember the emphasis Catholics placed on social justice. But today from many on this forum it can seem to me that what is so vitally important is to make sure the rich get tax cuts. I don’t know when this emphasis on lower taxes for the wealthiest and most financially able became so important. A relative of mine younger than I says an increase in greed began during the Reagan yrs. I think she may have a point. It’s almost as if money has become so important that success is determined by how much of it one has and how much one can avoid paying taxes. 🤷 Cut benefits for the lower classes, lay off workers, and so forth just as long as corporations make their profits and the most fortunate get their tax breaks at whatever expense to the lower classes. Oh well thank you as well for your valuable contributions in your posts. And of course peace to you as well as to all. God bless!

The federal government should only provide for the defense, yes. Remember the Catholic principle of subsidiarity? Let state and local provide the safety net, to the extent its needed.

You mean neo-cons like Hillary Clinton? She voted for the war. And neo-cons like John Kerry? He voted for the war too (but he was also against it too, somehow).
Our Country’s infrastructure is broken will your kind of corporate philosophy pitch in and take care of it.
No, its broken by Democrat supported tax and spend, welfare, war on poverty statism. The Republicans have done their share too - but they screwed up when they tried to act like Democrats. We need to get away from statism and back to fiscal sanity. Or would you like to end up like Greece?

Well, common sense should tell you all that we’d be much worse off if it had not been for the stimulus. So much to be done after Mr Bush people debacle. Give your opposition a chance , start compromising start saying yes instead of no,extend us 4 more years. We are moving forward, it is still slow I know but you cannot continue to deny, deny, deny.
And for all our sakes don’t move back! God give our leaders wisdom…We pray.
Peace, Carlan

Statisms only concern should be to provide for defense? Common sense please.States can’t do it all, what about the poor small states and all the other burdens all states have.

Common sense tells me that smaller states have a smaller population, so they can take care of themselves. Certainly, some things should be handled federally, but it’s a pretty short list. What burdens do you think states can’t take care of?

States can’t do what? What can the federal government do better than the state - other than provide for the common defense?

Maybe one would be border security - but that comes under defense.

Why should I answer your question, if you aren’t going to answer mine? Conversations are dialogues, not interrogations. If you don’t wish to have a conversation, then that is fine. Otherwise, please answer my question, and then I will answer your question. That’s how it works. Being in your 80s, one would have thought you had figured out such things by now…

I will answer you ? however Rlg you being so BRILLIANT i would have thought you would have figured it all out by now!
Now,some I am most concerned about would be education, health care for everyone, the broken down infrastructure , you get the picture I am quite sure!
For a basic educated oldie, It’s a life long process, and experience and longevity count for something , like bragging rights:p Peace to you and your friend, Carlan

The only one I agree with is “broken down infrastructure,” if it’s interstate infrastructure. Education and health care have been handled without federal government and should be handled without federal government. There is no reason citizens should send their tax dollars to the federal government, only to have a percentage sent back to the state. It’s inefficient and unnecessary. I’m surprised you didn’t include Social Security and welfare programs. You don’t care about those?

Now, my short list.

National Defense
Interstate traffic and commerce
National currency/banking
Treaties and trade negotiations
Minimal, sensible regulations
I’m also okay with some safety nets, but I would want them revamped to cut out bureaucracy, privatize and localize wherever possible.

The states can easily handle the rest, although they should also be careful not to step on the toes of municipalities.

Nope states can’t do it all, Carlan. They’re already cutting back. And if the Republicans get their way and more burden is placed on the states, common sense tells me they won’t be able to do it without much more funding.

Amen Carlan and let us pray we don’t go back.

Yes and to this end,so many confuse social justice with socialism. The Church encourages the former and rejects the latter. You stated this very clearly.👍👍

Common sense tells me that all the money comes from the same place - the taxpayers. If the states can’t afford it, that means the taxpayers can’t afford it. If the taxpayers can’t afford it, then the federal government can’t afford it either. 🤷
