Catholic Answers Forums Closing

That’s interesting 🤔
CCF? It is a very small forum, like all of them are now that CAF is closing. But be aware that they are running old vBulletin 4 software, which has security problems, does not work well on mobiles, and is prone to crashing. For a small forum, these things don’t matter nearly as much as they would have for CAF in its heyday. If any of the vB4 forums ever got that kind of exposure, they would probably get hacked.

There were several moderators whom you could have a great discussion with. Thomas Casey was no exception. I miss them all.

Indeed. For my money, he was the best of the best. But I also enjoyed chatting with Michael Francis.

I thought CCF used to have a big disclaimer that if the mods thought your post was not in accordance with Catholic teaching, they would label your profile “Catholic not in communion with the Church”.
I thought that was a bit presumptuous, so I didn’t go over there when the forum changed to Discourse, even though some of the good folks like Prayer Warrior tawny did.

In looking more recently at their forum, I can’t find the statement about the status change so I’m wondering if they stopped doing that.

In any event they do run a tighter ship than several of the other forums, which to me is good. I especially admire that they shut down their Politics forum because people were not being civil in it, even after being warned. Political discussions really seem to bring out the beast in a lot of people.

Now they require members to self disclose whether you are in “full communion,” as defined by whether you accept everything the Church teaches. Failure to accurately disclose is an infractionable offense.

Too tight, IMHO.

I disagree with Pope Francis on the death penalty because I don’t believe his prudential judgement meets the conditions to be a valid magisterial act. I have no idea whether CCF would consider me a real Catholic or not and I prefer not to submit myself to such judgment, so I won’t be signing up for CCF until that is clarified.

I will, however, recommend CCF for anyone who likes an extra tight ship.

Yes, that’s the type of disagreement that would make me uncomfortable with some moderator just deciding a person is “Not in communion with the Church”. That’s not their call to make; people do not get put “out of communion with the Church” merely for expressing doubt, and often not even for expressing error, and when they are excommunicated it’s by their bishop, not by some layperson running an Internet forum.

@Tis_Bearself If you (or anyone else for that matter) want a canon lawyer in your forum, let me know or invite me or whatever needs to happen. I don’t do a lot of forum-ing but I could at least be around when someone has a purely hypothetical question.

Your statements are underestimation of this forum and they are totally wrong.

There is treasure in the depths of many old discussions

By the way, who can sell me the Forum Discussions on a flash drive?

I can’t believe the forum will disappear.
This is more than the sinking of the Titanic.

Well, apparently Catholic Answers agrees with me.

You have 8 days to find these old treasures. Good Luck!

You can download your own posts. I’m not sure how much space you’d need for the entire forum. Also, it won’t be formatted correctly so there would be coding involved.

Feel free to talk with Mr. Check:

Hello My Friends, As we make our way through one of my favorite liturgical practices, the “O Antiphons,” I just want to thank you good people for your understanding of our decision to close the Catholic Answers Forums. I know many of you have been on these forums for some time. I especially want to thank those of you whose irenic and charitable answers have brought souls closer to Jesus Christ. You will learn on the other side of the veil how much God has made use of you! If any of you have …

I would agree that the Forums have become a dumpster fire, but I don’t know if I’d say they’re complete, unmitigated garbage. The bad has definitely outweighed the good recently, though.

Mr. Gunner,
I gather you know that Warren Zevon thought of himself as something of Graham Greene. He had a lifelong attraction to in the Catholic Church and tried to convert when he was diagnosed terminal, but, apparently, received some bad counsel from a priest. Who knows exactly, but he suffered (from some self-inflicted wounds, to be sure) and I pray Our Lord had mercy on him. For decades he has been among my very favorite songwriters, certainly in the top five.

Truly one of the greats. The songs he wrote about his impending death are especially beautiful.
