Just curious. What is your spiritual gift?I have been baptized in the Holy Spirit, but have never spoken a single syllable in a “tongue” as that is not my charism.

PM sent.Just curious. What is your spiritual gift?
There are charismatic Catholic groups around. I’ve heard members of one of our local prayer groups speak in “tongues”. However the Catholic charismatic groups tend to be more controlled.I’m interested in religious and/or spiritual experiences. So, I would like to discuss their experiences.
I was born and raised in a very large charismatic community, one that has even been supported by a cardinal. What do you wish to ask?Do we have any “born-again” Catholics here? Do we have any Catholics here who were “baptized in the Holy Spirit” and pray in tongues?
This is very true.but I’d presume they sometimes speak in tongues, maybe give prophetic pronouncements etc
Don’t feel bad, I have to google acronyms all the time.Oh, my! I’m so silly. I mean the abbreviation “OP” ,What does O-P mean? Somehow, it refers to the person posting the original thread. Does it mean Original Poster?
Have you receive the “baptism in the Holy Spirit?” Do you pray in tongues?I was born and raised in a very large charismatic community, one that has even been supported by a cardinal. What do you wish to ask?
The individual organizations are each under their local Bishop, so there is direct oversight. From the catechism:My mom was involved with the Charismatic movement for awhile. I think it was when Fr. DiOrio was in my home area for a bit. She got a lot out of it spiritually. It seemed weird to me as a kid and I know that it’s not for me as an adult but it has a lot of value for many. I can’t see a problem unless it goes against Church teaching.
799 Whether extraordinary or simple and humble, charisms are graces of the Holy Spirit which directly or indirectly benefit the Church, ordered as they are to her building up, to the good of men, and to the needs of the world.
800 Charisms are to be accepted with gratitude by the person who receives them and by all members of the Church as well. They are a wonderfully rich grace for the apostolic vitality and for the holiness of the entire Body of Christ, provided they really are genuine gifts of the Holy Spirit and are used in full conformity with authentic promptings of this same Spirit, that is, in keeping with charity, the true measure of all charisms.
Thus, any abuses or suspected false manifestations are subject to the immediate discernment of the group leaders and of the Bishop.801 It is in this sense that discernment of charisms is always necessary. No charism is exempt from being referred and submitted to the Church’s shepherds. “Their office [is] not indeed to extinguish the Spirit, but to test all things and hold fast to what is good,” so that all the diverse and complementary charisms work together “for the common good.”
I don’t think I’ve heard of “baptism” by the Holy Spirit before.Have you receive the “baptism in the Holy Spirit?” Do you pray in tongues?
It’s based (more or less) on this biblical passage…I don’t think I’ve heard of “baptism” by the Holy Spirit before.
There is also the “gift of interpretation of tongues.” 1 Corinthians 12:10We believe that prayer by tongues is a gift the Holy Spirit gives to some. I asked those who prayed in tongues if they can understand what they’re saying and most of them said they didn’t, but those the Holy Spirit gave the gift of hearing did.
From the position of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, there are two separate, distinct gifts of the Holy Spirit which employ the use of Tongues. The most familiar one is the common gift of praying in Tongues. It is referred to as common because all people can use it to praise God, thank God, ask God for mercy, and petition God – just like we do in our native speech. Praying in prayer Tongues is our personal prayer directed to God.I don’t think I’ve heard of “baptism” by the Holy Spirit before.

That’s exactly what I meant by ‘those who can understand’.There is also the “gift of interpretation of tongues.” 1 Corinthians 12:10
I have attended several Catholic Charismatic prayer meetings. Typically what happens is that during the course of the meeting, one individual will stand up and speak in tongues. Shortly after, another individual will stand up and give the interpretation.
Our community has various one-day youth events where we submerge in the Holy Spirit, and it is usually in those events that the Holy Spirit confers those gifts. I didn’t receive a gift myself, but I did have a vision. From the position of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, there are two separate, distinct gifts of the Holy Spirit which employ the use of Tongues. The second gift of the Holy Spirit which employs Tongues is one of the nine classical gifts listed by St. Paul. These nine gifts are ministries to the community. One of the classical, ministry gifts is speaking God’s message to the community in Tongues. It is this particular gift which requires someone with the Holy Spirit Gift of Interpretation to actually interpret the spoken Tongues to the community. These two gifts, Tongues and Interpretation, bring God’s message to the public community.
Thanks for that, I’m going to look into him (his music is on Spotify). Looks like he was in the band Mason Proffit. I’ve never heard them but remember seeing their albums when I worked in a used record store. Interesting.John Michael Talbot is a Charismatic Catholic. He is an award winning musician and a founder of a Franciscan order. His music and singing are ethereal - I have a lot of his music and he is giving a concert at our church in June. Yay!

Yes. But our vibrant prayer group is no longer in existence. I still retain my deep interest in the Holy Spirit Gift of Praying in Tongues. Currently, as an individual on my own, I pray very short prayers quietly in Tongues. I often suggest that praying in Tongues is better than road rage. Our community has various one-day youth events where we submerge in the Holy Spirit, and it is usually in those events that the Holy Spirit confers those gifts. It’s cool that you know so much. Are you a charismatic too?

I have surmised that the Holy Spirit may have manifested Himself among (including others) the Pentecostals when His presence and power in the Catholic Church had been overlooked. Well, that all changed a few decades ago.Our day and time need this kind of witness especially among youth. The Holy Spirit will not be boxed in, He will move as He pleases.
Right on Brother!! Some of us Catholics need to really study and really believe that Jesus must be glorified in their lives by really turning to Him and receive His Spirit. What is refused is given to another. Grace acomplishes what it was given for, and does not return empty. God makes no worthless, and fruitless moves.I have surmised that the Holy Spirit may have manifested Himself among (including others) the Pentecostals when His presence and power in the Catholic Church had been overlooked. And, it is His manifestation amongst the true Pentecostals and other non-Catholic groups that arouses the ire of certain Catholics who, without knowledge or experience, condemn the Catholic charismatic movement. What they may not realize is that the position of the Holy Spirit is only being restored within the Church. It is certainly not some protestant import as they suspect.
