Hey Mis,

It is noticetable to the casual reader of CA that you “robertaf” have taken on a Dictatorial bent. Who are you, Mr robertaf, to tell anyone when and where to post? misericordie was posting what he/her considered to be important.

I have read about 80% of the posts on this thread and no more than two gave any results of C.A. makerteacher would not give us what the "visions’ were about. I wonder why?

All I read is Centering Prayer is good. It is a Pep Rally with NO SUBSTANCE. It seems like a “Quick Thrill” sesson to me, but it was not a thrill when I did partake of it. I would never do it again.:yup:

Just out of curiosity, what exactly does the Church say with regards to this sort of thing? I mean, is not dancing and clapping permitted in certain cultures where such means of worship is the norm (some African countries, for example)? Please PM me if possible, so we don’t clatter the thread.

Cheers,

Well, it seems clear to me that Robertaf has made it clear from the beginning what the purpose of this thread was. The title says it all, really: “Catholic Charismatic Spiritual Talk and Sharing”. Anyone who wants to debate the Charismatic Renewal can start another thread. Is that not fair enough?

Of course, I guess you would want to interrupt the thread, if you’re convinced that the CCR is from the devil himself. I do understand that, even though I do not agree with it.

How can you say about any prayer that it has “NO SUBSTANCE”? They aren’t meant to replace the sacraments, of course, but they are supposed to help the Christian walk. We are supposed to “…pray for one another…” (James 5:16). It’s another way of putting this into practice.

God bless,
TTM

Also, I’d just like to say that I understand the sentiments expressed by Annunciata. Misericordie, your last few posts do show signs of the spirit of mockery, and I’m not sure that it comes from God (in fact, if it is hurting Annunciata, it most probably is not).

Perhaps Misericordie, you could start a thread (yet another!) to debate the validity of the CCR, and place a link here for anyone to follow (or link to an existing one). That would be a far more charitable way of expressing your opinions. 👍

God bless,
TTM

Greetings Church
Greetings Exporter

I am sorry if my tone offended anybody. I am far from dictitorial.
However, because of many requests from Charismatics and the fact that a few folks in these discussions have caused so many problems in other Charismatic threads, causing them to close down, I started this one requesting that folks who really wanted to debate, to do so in another thread. This was done with the approval of the moderators and with advise as to how to deal with the thread.

It is our wish that this one remains a place for Charismatics to “Talk and Share”.

There is plenty of room in other threads for debate and mockery.

Once again, I do apologize for sounding offensive.

Roberta, perhaps the moderators could remove all the posts that don’t belong in this thread?

Hi all,

I was just reading something related to the Immaculate Conception, and this struck me as having a lot of relevance to the Charismatic Renewal. The prejudice a lot of the “traditional” Catholics have against the Charismatic Renewal, I think, stems from their opposition to the “cultural” differences. This is taken from “The Mother of the Son: The Case for Marian Devotion” by Mark P. Shea (crisismagazine.com/feature1.htm):

"…much of the conflict between Catholics and Evangelicals is cultural, not theological. Evangelical culture (whether you’re a man or a woman) is overwhelmingly masculine, while Catholic culture (again, whether you’re a man or a woman) is powerfully feminine. And the two groups often mistake their cultural differences for theological ones.

The Catholic approach tends to be body-centered, Eucharistic, and contemplative. Prayer, in Catholic culture, is primarily for seeking union with God. Evangelical approaches to God tend to be centered on Scripture, verbal articulation of belief, mission, and the Spirit working in power. Prayer, in such a culture, is primarily for getting things done. Both are legitimate Christian ways of approaching the gospel. Indeed, they should both be part of the Catholic approach to the gospel. But because of these unconscious differences, Evangelicals and Catholics often clash about culture while they think they’re debating theology. The feminine spirituality of the Catholic can regard the masculine Evangelical approach as shallow, noisy, and utilitarian, lacking an interior life."

Hmm. Sounds familiar?

TTM, that is very interesting; thank you.

Catholic Charismatic Spiritual Talk

is the name of this thread.

This is a rather new innovation. If we could ask all the Roman Catholics who have lived and died for the past 100 years, how many what percent] would claim to be different than most Catholics and say they are Charismatic Catholics?

There are some who are atagonistic toward the saying of the Latin Mass and say Tridentine or Latin Mass in any form is schismatic.

Do the ones who practice Charismatic innovations think they are superior to those of us who do not partake?

Hmm…I guess I don’t consider Charismatic Spirituality a new innovation–it’s been at the core of our experience as the People of God since the Church was founded at Pentecost.

I suppose that I would say that the externals of the CCR are a relatively recent innovation, but I would follow that up by saying that I believe that the CCR is a movement of the Holy Spirit, leading the Church toward a rediscovery of its true richness.

This is a great thread.

Sorry, didn’t answer this one. While I have not identified myself with the Renewal, I do have a spirituality that mixes the contemplative and charismatic ‘traditions.’

I certainly don’t see myself as better than anyone else, and I haven’t met another charismatic who does, yet. However, there is a certain analysis that says: If one believes that charisms and spiritual gifts are the birthright of every baptized person, then wherever the Church exists and remains ignorant of those charisms she is unable to take advantage of every gift that the Lord gave her to accomplish His mission in the world.

Perhaps that ‘subtext’ can be ‘read’ by others as a statement of charismatic superiority. But I think the fact of the matter is that by virtue of our baptism, we are all charismatic.

Keith

I’d just like to confirm what Keith Strohm said, not with my own words but with those of Peter Kreeft, the famous Catholic philosopher of our age:

The Catholic Church will not be strong until she recaptures the source of her strength that the earliest church found…until the charismatic movement becomes invisible - because all Catholics are charismatics.

Do the people who practice Franciscan spirituality think they are superior to those of us who do not?

Joking aside, I think the core misconception is that you believe this is movement started by human beings. We believe that it was a movement started by the Holy Spirit (because we live in a time where we need the gifts of the Spirit to witness to the powerfully secular world).

Please have a look at what EWTN has to say about the Charismatic Renewal:
