There’s some concern that someone who is not very religious but is teaching in a Catholic school might have a jaundiced or even negative view of Catholicism and would try to impart that to the Catholic students. I have seen this first hand. There are unreligious lay people who teach in Catholic schools for a variety of reasons (like they cannot get a job in the public school for some reason) and they really don’t like being there and don’t like the “Catholic” atmosphere and it comes out in their teaching.Is there a special Catholic version of American history that would require a devout Catholic to teach it?
In this case, the teacher’s response to Daisy sounded reasonable enough that he doesn’t seem to be Catholic-bashing, but he could have tried a little harder to present a balanced view. A number of the posters on this thread have made good points that Serra and other missionaries weren’t all bad, and the indigenous peoples weren’t all good.
