I think most people have goodwill and are genuinely misinformed.

The people without goodwill are willfully ignorant. Or knowingly spread lies. I find the worst offenders are angry former Catholics who had poor catechesis and learned about Catholicism from their evangelical pastors.

I don’t think that there are many people that meet that definition. What would a former Catholic be particularly angry about if their connection to the church was so loose they had poor catechesis? And the evangelical preachers I’ve met over the years are certainly cordial enough and none too hateful at all.

You’d be surprised. I went to an evangelical church with my Protestant spouse for 5 years and this was my experience. The former Catholics had a bitterness that they were robbed or short-changed in some way because they were never taught the Bible. They were the ones shouting the loudest that we worship Mary and use vain repetition and call priests Father. They know just enough Bible that they can misapply it and take it out of context. They imagine themselves to be mini-Bible scholars and Catholics ignorant. Again, the people I knew.

I always wonder about that sort of thing - because why not just go out and learn the thing? It’s not hard, especially in the 21st century. All kinds of help out there. I also never heard my cradle Catholic dad say that, so I don’t know if there’s a difference in the era (he graduated from Catholic high school in 1949 and went to Catholic school his whole life) or if I missed something.
You’ve never met Fundamentalist Independent Baptists then.
This is completely true.

Enter my grandmother’s church.

I sincerely believe that the reason my siblings and I (all of whom went with her at some point) were treated differently at her particular church was because they knew our dad was Catholic. I’m not kidding, either. Just snide remarks and blatant statements made by the preacher, of all people, as if we had something you could catch. It didn’t change when I became a Methodist, either - I’m sure he thought of me as only a few steps removed from the Catholic Church. I think it irritated him when, after my grandfather died, I used to take my grandmother to church every other Sunday so she could go, because I’ve never seen a man go out of his way to be as exclusionary of my presence as he did. So weird to me.

When my dad retired from the Navy and we moved to eastern NC, kids who knew he was Catholic used to use that as the last possible insult. “Well, at least my dad’s not Catholic.” Mostly from Baptist kids. I never could wrap my head around it. I would just roll my eyes at them. Really - that’s all you’ve got? 😆😆 My mom became a favorite teacher for them, though, so that bought me some peace. She said kids used to ask her, “Is your husband Catholic?” and when she’d say yes, they’d get a puzzled look on their face and say, “So what’s that like?” 🤣🤣

I hate Protestantism and Orthodoxy. I don’t hate the people who practice them, but I despise their faith. I hate every faith that is not Catholic.

tried to boil down the responses into reasons.
appears to be that hatred arises from what people say (&about each other).
i wonder why anyone would make it a simple arbitrary matter to say that
it is not the Catholics but the others who do the talking.
you who responded will likely represent others at least statistically.
don’t you see it? what goes around comes around.

The biggest argument i hear is that “It is not in the Bible!” When discussing Catholic doctrine etc.

We think too much upon the Holy family, perhaps ?

Mary and Joseph, with baby Jesus, going off to Egypt, of all places.

I find it really hard not to hate them back.
The reason i found this forum (2 days ago) is to recover from those hatred.

I don’t think it is fruitful to try to “defend the faith” or argue as even our own explanations can be flawed or insufficient.
The best thing to do is provide them with links to the Vaticans own pages and to the Catholic Catechism.

Catholics are hated by protestants; protestants are hated by catholics. Change the word hated to misunderstood. Most hate of any kind is based on what you have seen, heard, experienced or been told (whether true or false.) I laugh at books I have read about what Catholic’s believe and they were written by a protestant. Same hold true when Catholics write about what protestant believes. It’s all lack of education and even wanting to be educated.

10 Commandments

Divorce & remarriage

Adultery & fornication

Abortion

Mass every Sunday & holyday … [really? EVERY???]

Sacrament of confession = there must be some defined actions that are sins

absence of political correctness [we have a or several catechisms]

focus on crucifixion [as well as resurrection]

misunderstanding of Christianity … which is what led Karl Keating to start Catholic Answers to begin with … which is why he called it “Catholic Answers”. Which is what led to him writing and printing the tracts.

What I encountered as a JW and a protestant, is what seems to be an arrogance with Catholics regarding them being the one and only way to God, they do not seem to want to humble themselves to find out why they are misunderstood nor to correct misinterpretations of what the church teaches.
You encountered this personally? That is interesting I’ve seen the opposite. Most of the protestants that I have bumped into have this arrogant, superior view to me and my faith. ‘Why do you need a Priest?’ ‘chuckle chuckle, not eating meat huh?’ ‘Those Catholics and all their kids…’

It is what it is. I do not discount what you say. I’m almost more surprised because it seems like there are alot of Catholics that don’t know enough about our faith.

I believe it was Fulton Sheen, who said they don’t hate what the Catholic Church teaches, they hate what they THINK the Catholic Church teaches, or in some cases what they have been erroneously told…
