An update, I guess. We went to mass for the first time with my husband on Saturday evening and it wasn’t terrible. The church is smaller than I thought it would be and it was mostly old people at that service, so that was good since I have some general social anxiety that makes going to new places with strangers sort of daunting at time. We got there early enough to sit through the pre-Mass rosary and I actually enjoyed that. It was sort of calming and I guess it put my son to sleep, as he promptly passed out and slept through almost the whole thing. And it was way shorter than I thought, so we’re going to give Saturday evenings a try and see how it goes.
I do have another thing, though, that maybe you guys can help with. For some reason, social anxiety again I’m sure, I am absolutely terrified of talking to the priest. My husband says that he’s a really nice man and I’m sure he is, but the prospect of having to shake his hand and introduce myself after the service was just too much this weekend and you guys would have probably laughed at me as I hid behind the clusters of old ladies and sort of bolted for the door with the baby like the law was after me or something. I’m going to have to talk to him with my husband about the marriage validation thing in a couple weeks anyway, and my husband suggested that maybe talking to him one on one might be easier starting out since I’m reluctant to talk about church stuff at home But, I feel like I would just be wasting the guy’s time, I’m sure he’s got better things to be doing.
Is it normal to introduce yourself to the priest after mass if you’re new, even if you’re not Catholic and might not be going back? Do you think talking to him individually would be a good idea? I have a lot of questions, and I can kind of see my husband’s point that it might be easier to ask the priest in some way than talk about it with my husband at this particular moment, but it sort of feels like asking dumb questions in class without doing the assigned reading or something.
