Once the Reverend shows me where scripture claims it alone is sufficient, I shall listen to him. In the mean tine, he sounds like so many others who become all stirred up each time the Pope is in the news. Rev should be able to make quite some wine from all of those sour grapes.

Christ’s peace.

Read purgatory.
Christ paid once and for all the price of our sin on the cross, there is nothing more that needs to be paid,

Try to learn the difference between temporal and spiritual consequences for sin. Otherwise you’ll keep tilting at windmills and never understand why the Church teaches what it does.

There is no contradiction between Christ’s once for all redemptive work and purgatory.
If you take your logic to its consequence you have to be shaken in your faith by this question too:
“Why if you are saved and totally once for all redeemed do you still suffer from a cold in the winter… Did not Christ carry your sickness on to the Cross?” So what is going on?

I am not out to be sarcastic. Not the least. I find the topic very interesting and I struggled with it much both before and after I was converted into the Catholic Church.
I just think that you, yes you, should start by defining to us Catholics what purgatory is according to your understanding… what does this concept actually mean when you hear it?

Then, if we are humble and you are too we can discover whether what you believe we believe is what we actually believe or if maybe what we believe is something near to what you might find acceptable and logical at least to a small extent…

A good idea?
God bless you <><

With all due respect it serves no one to toss around more Catholic concepts that, also, are not understood by our Evangelical and Protestant brethren… let’s deal with the question in a good way taking the logic step by step, shall we?.. instead of going on the defensive?
We don’t need to stand up for Jesus by means of short cutting sentences… don’t you agree dear brother?
And… we are not asked to give accoding to what we receive. We are called to love… As Mother Teresa said: if you judge me you have no time to love me.

Peace to you 👍

Chris was not the one who brought up Purgatory. It was one of our seperated bretheren who did.He made a statement about Purgatory that was not true and needed to be corrected. Surely you are not suggesting that we should let distortions of Catholic teaching go unanswered.

Not all Catholic doctrines and practices can be defended by resorting to protestant evangelical language and concepts. At some point, our separated brethren will have to do some reading of their own (as many of us who came from protestantism did) if they’re truly interested in understanding the Church and her teachings rather than just scoring points for the home team.

It is evident that this person is very ignorant of church teaching, history and scripture.

Then why dont you explain “purgatory” in a short and clear way instead of joining the choir of voices that have already stated the obvious?

What does that have to do with purgatory?
From Hisalone’s profile of “Christian”, she/he may be OSAS and is surely SS, so there is most certainly a lack of understanding of Catholicism, just as in the Right Reverend’s case. Same bible, same destination, but a belief in a different path.

Christ’s peace.

Not true at all. I am quite familiar with the teaching. I totally disagree with it. It is a false teaching.
Evangelical and/or Fundamentalist, right? How can you claim to understand Catholicism? Who taught you what you “know” and what is their authority to teach? Inquiring minds want to know, since you seem to have Heavenly knowledge of our “false teachings”. This is important, as your soul is at stake, and so are ours.

Christ’s peace.

p.s. Re-read rule 7 that you already agreed to.

Nothing unclean may enter the Kingdom of God. We all die with some level of personal sin. Explain to me how you get into Heaven with sin on your soul. Unless, of course, you think that sin is cleansed painlessly and magically upon death. That would make Christ’s sacrifice unnecessary, wouldn’t it?

Christ’s peace.

Then why do you not do what I said and explain what you believe the Catholic Church teaches about purgatory… and then afterwards you can point out the errors in this teaching, if indeed your conception corresponds to the actual teaching of the Church. if it does not you are better served with finding out about lest you walk in ignorance and if you are right, both in your desription and in the fact that this is a teaching of error, then you might convince us to take up your position.
Its not our favourite passtime to be deceived… most of us have come to the Catholic Church after extensive prayer and studies… But hey, we are humble… we could hypothetically be wrong.

So, I am totally prepared to give you a break and hear you out. I dont ask much: only that you explain what the Catholic Church teaches about purgatory… ergo, what purgatory means and then whats wrong with the assumption of it.

Deal?

Po,
brother I dont find your explanation sufficient or clarifying to the extent that it can make a non-Catholic Bible-only person receive this as truth at all. However. I read the book “Born Fundamentalist, born again Catholic” by David Currie and it had the best explanation I have thus far encountered.
Yet , I still freely admit that its the authority of the Church that I believe in that makes me accept the theory of purgatory as well.
Anyway… maybe you could hold back before explaining further and let’s just hear what Hisalone has to say.
I hope he is not only superficial words but enough of a brother to substantiate his disagrement with some serious explanation.
I dare assume that he is not here to just hit and run but expects to be asked to give an account for that which he claims to know about Catholic teaching.

Peace and Praised be Jesus.

Sorry! :o I think I mis-read the intent of your post. This happens often using the “sola scriptura” format! I think I can guess what HA believes, but you’re right - let’s see!

Christ’s peace.
